Sas, hopefully you see this. So that hotel was absolutely lying to you, and you gave it away when you said the room smelled like cigarettes. The machine is what's called an Ozone machine, and they're used in buildings that have had fire damage to get the smell of smoke out. Landlords will use use them to try and get the smell of cigarettes out of properties. Ozone is technically a toxic gas, and for sure not something you should be around long term.
