Whatever their singing about, whether it's the bayou, the graveyard train, or prison life, you feel it

One of my favorite CCR tunes, although it is hard to rate them. Brilliant band, John Fogerty is a fricking genius.

Interesting side note: The song was a traditional song first recorded in 1929 and becoming more popular with Leadbelly's 1934 and 1936 recordings. In February of 1962 Harry Belafonte released an album called the "Midnight Special"and he hired a relatively unknown musician to play harmonica on the title track, named Bob Dylan. A month after the release of Belafonte's recording, Dylan's first album was released, although the recording of him with Belafonte took place in February of 1961and recording for his own album began in November of 1961. The version from the Belafonte album might be good for a reaction!

You have such an old soul, Shawn. So wish you could have ridden the train along with us old, 60's folks when this music was a part of our daily lives. I am happy that you are finding it now, but it sure would have been fun. Take care and be well. Peace.

Yes, Shawn, you are definitely gonna be missed! Your reactions are as genuine and heart-felt as CCR's music. And I do agree with you--Creedence put some old school gospel "revival" sound into this one.

When CCR did a cover, it was always either as good as, or better than, the original. But when other artists cover CCR songs, they are never as good as CCR's version.

As for people covering CCR, Tina Turner knocked Proud Mary out of the part.

@@miconis123 That's my canonical example of doing a worse job. Her version is certainly _not_ better than the original. It's good enough on its own for what it is, but her version completely misinterprets the vibe of the song.

John Fogerty is not only a musical genius/icon, but also a great historian of American music. His autobiography is proof of that, well worth reading.

They never disappoint!! What is amazing is that is the greatest band of all time to never have a number one hit!! To me that says a lot about how much great music there was in the late 60's and early 70's, more than any disrespect to CCR!!

its amazing c.c.r. had so many hits n theyre never mentioned with the other top bands.if i remember right.read once that they had more #2 hits than anyone else.they were always missing out #1 by the stones, beatles, etc.coming out with singles at the same time..

"Gloomy", "Walk On The Water", "The Penthouse Pauper" - often forgotten deep cuts by CCR in my opinion sound even better than their most popular songs which are all over the reactors community. The first two are a bit psychedelic, but still huge CCR vibes. The last one is a blues and has the best lead guitar ad libs I ever heard by Fogerty.

I heard this song sung by a guy in a coffee house several years before CCR recorded it. As I recall, no one knows who wrote it. It goes way back to sometime in the early 1900s. The story is based on the legend of some prison in Texas. Supposedly the prison was close to the tracks of a railroad called the Midnight Special. If the light from the train happened to shine through a prison window onto one of the prisoners as it was coming round the bend, it was a portent that lucky prisoner would soon be set free.

Shawn - you might consider doing a 1st Time Movie Reaction channel, as I recall you said you were 'movie illiterate' so-to-speak. This cover ALWAYS makes me think of the opening scene to a fun little horror flick called TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE (1983) - catch it if you can. Yeah this is an old oldie (LOL) and references a night train and headlight shining thru the cell window of a jail.
