Are There Really GIANT Smallmouth?? Susquehanna River Pre-fishing!!

This is my first time coming up to Pennsylvania, this trip is to fish a national kayak tournament on the Susquehanna River. I had heard of this river for years, and of all the smallmouth that live here. How hard is it to catch them?

That long gray boat in the background at 4:59 is the Millersburg Ferry, in operation since 1817 and is the last wooden double stern wheel paddle boat operating in the United States. It is also the last operating ferry on the Susquehanna River and is on the National Register of Historic Places. My kids and grandkids always loved that trip across the river and getting ice cream on the other side. Cool to see it here.👍🏼😁

Fished the Susquehanna River in Pa and Md the majority of my life. It’s an amazing fishery! Smallies push baitfish into shoals and transitions the majority of the season. 2.5-3” Slam shady paddle is my go to. A lot of people will use an umbrella rig with 2” on secondary and 3” on primary, pearl color. 3-4’ is ideal but 5-9’ with colder temps. Enjoy your channel and good luck with your tourney!

Been watching your channel for a few months now. Glad to see you made it to PA. I've lived in central PA my entire life. Wade fishing the creeks and rivers of PA has been a passion for me since I was a young boy I am now 67 and wading for me is much more difficult than it used to be. Always good stuff, Mr Dalton. As pretty as that backdrop is with those PA foothills, I'm still partial to the TN mountains, especially since I lived in your neck of the woods awhile back. Great video as always, an unrelated question for you. How far from the campground/marina off I-75 can you run a bass boat up the Hiwassee? Looking to head down from Knoxvegas 2nd week of November and was curious how far I could take a full sized bass boat safely up the Hiwassee versus the Alumacraft? Gonna be a touch cold to kayak the river, so we were debating what boat to take to get up there and see what was hungry.

Took a break, and caught a break! That was a heavy Smallmouth Bass, right there at the end. Great work! You guessed that Bass's weight at about 3 1/2 pounds. Brother, to me, he looked to be somewhere between 4-5 pounds! At the very least, 4-4 1/2 pounds, is my guess. Have a great evening, and Git-R-Done tomorrow!!!

I'm 45 min away from the Susquehanna and I'm restricted to bank fishing . Wee hour cat fishing didn't produce so I threw out the no name brand of whopper plopper and got into some smallie action around daybreak. No meat on the table but not skunked or disappointed either. That looks like millersburg where the wiconisco creek comes out at riverfront park at 14:21 . Seen someone pull a nice muskie out right there from the shore. Nice video. I had no idea there were smallies like that in that area

John, I live right off I81. I saw you travling toward Roanoke Va....before Roanoke you would have seen Radford. You should go there and fish The New River. Research it first. Very dangerous current!

You should have gone farther up river above the ferry dam. That section holds a lot of certified donks. 18-20 inchers. I fish that section almost every weekend.

If you make it up this way again I suggest using a bitsy bug mini jig with a three in senko trailer all green pumpkin it slays smallmouth in the susqy just cast and let it drift down the current and give it a pop every now and then

I’ve fished the Susquehanna in northern PA…fishing is really good number wise but the quality is definitely much better in central and southern PA for some reason..it’s nothing to catch 50+ smallmouth and not have one be over 12 inches up here… have caught quite a few 3-4 pounders and a couple pushing 5 pounds but only in the spring and fall

I fish the central susquehanna from Sunbury dam to Holtwood dam. This section is all catch and release, that is why we have more big fish.

Spinnerbaits work well. Current makes a big difference. Jerkbaits are good but not sure about the fall for them
