Audrey II was a piece of genius. I've seen modern CGI that doesn't move as smoothly as that giant puppet did in1986.

They filmed it at half-speed which is how they attained that level of movement. Plus like 30 different puppeteers working on it at once lol. Some of the best animatronic work ever.

The making of Little Shop is worth a whole video in itself. Unsurprisingly, Brian Henson was one of Audrey II's performers. And Marty Robinson, who performed Audrey II in the off-Broadway play, is best known for performing Snuffleupagus on Sesame St!

i swear, practical effects will always be freakier to me than CGI. There's no way computer graphics can make me as viscerally uncomfortable with The Fly as the practical effects will. Also props to the Neverending story for scaring the crap out of me.
@BeckyNosferatu
@BeckyNosferatu 4 жыл бұрын
It's cause CGI can get it to look relatively normal. While practical effects will never achieve that level of realism that we expect, making us wary to it; it moves unnaturally and that sends our brain into fight or flight mode.
@BeckyNosferatu

@@SirBlackReeds I did, but yes, over time, there's a reaction that your brain goes 'I'm not in danger, this isn't going to hurt me!' and the light switches off.
@Lumibear.
@Lumibear. 4 жыл бұрын
It’s really hard and expensive to do it well, though, from the design, sculpt, build, puppeteering, lighting, direction, everything has to come together perfectly to make it work on the day, sometimes for just one shot, and if just one thing isn’t right, it doesn’t work, so it’s obvious why CGI is so much more preferred nowadays. For me, though, CGI, great as it is now, still often fails on two factors, the motion, if it breaks physics then you know it’s just a graphic so all the scare factor goes right out the window, and the interaction, if it never convincingly touches anything or anyone, then again, so not scary. If you’re trying to create a fictional reality that feels real, you just can’t beat building something real, but making it work is becoming a long lost art now. Shame.

That final metamorphosis made my skin crawl as much as clips from "The Thing" did, so I'm not watching those movies anytime soon. Mad respect for what they are, but I'm not a horror fan. @@LilJBean i think the movie is cool, but its not good. As someone who loves the book, and i read the book like 20 times, the film is not good. Fundamental parts from the story are missing. Atrèju is in a desert at one point and he meets a big lion who helps him. This is the point in the story that makes a big part and its missing. Without the lion, Atrèju wouldn't know how to fight the blackness. And this is a fact. So, storytelling wise is the movie not good. If you don't believe me, pleas read the never ending story. I don't think I'll ever think an animatronic is scary, since I love all kind of puppets to no end, and I do consider animatronics and other automatons as part of that category. I love them so much I find all of them beautiful and couldn't be afraid of them. But Gmork, really? Even putting aside my love for these mechanical beings, he looks so gorgeous, so beautiful... How can one find him scary? Well, it doesn't help I'm a bit sad for the character, too... And oh my god the giant bat... I ALSO love bats... so... this is perfection... I'm so sad we didn't get to see it a lot in the final version of the movie.

Lol. I literally just got done watching Tremors this morning. I never would have thought I would have ended the day learning about the animatronic graboids. Awesomeness. I still remember watching it for the first time as a kid at a friends birthday party and halfway through they got bored and paused it and we all went outside. All I kept asking them was to go back inside and finish the movie. I’ll never forget that.

I don't think Gmork was supposed to be a werewolf. I think he's just a giant, supernatural wolf, like Fenrir from Norse mythology. =)

In the book, he's specifically stated as a werewolf. It's what lets him be capable of moving between Fantastica (Fantasia in the film) and the real world. In Fantastica, he's a wolf with the capacity for speech and the intellect of a human. In the real world, he states that he becomes something like a man, but not truly an "earthling" man. It's never shown if he can transform between shapes while in Fantastica, but he's apparently something far more than just a giant wolf.

@@Mokiefraggle Well, I appreciate the info. I still haven't read it yet. But I was simply referring to the one in the movie, specifically. Although who can really say what W. Peterson was thinking at the time. Thanks though! =)

What I find interesting is how much computer animation has changed acting. Actors are sometimes acting completely alone, covered in dots. Actors aren't working with puppets or animatronics. I find the miniature sets incredibly impressive

I know that they’re not animatronics but I think the gremlins should’ve been on the list Audrey 2 was definitely amazing though

I've seen the movie dozens of times, and I never knew the lava-demon in 'Bedazzled' was animatronic! That just makes me love the movie even more! (and that Hellish monster STILL looks better than Malbulgia in 'Spawn'.)

I once got lucky and could actually sit on the head of Fruchfur(Falcor I think is his englisch name) at Babelsberg in Germany. It was the real prop. It was so freaking awesome since I used to watch the Neverending Story frequently as a kid. And sitting on his head was just so great!

Outside of the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park, Audrey II is my favorite effect in a film ever. I feel sorry for the puppeteers animating the darn thing, but boy does their work pay off big time! Add onto that the brilliantly cast Levi Stubbs and you have the meanest green mother cinema will ever see! Seriously Warner Brothers, DON'T REBOOT LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS!
