Karts are actually pretty good if you know what vehicle to pick. The Mini Beast/Concerto and Wild Wing are great karts. They have the best drifting capabilities, are easy to steer and both are unlocked from the start!

Honestly, keeping a thunder cloud for the full duration but then passing it last second is really advantageous, because you basically have a star minus the invincibility. So passing it off right away only benefits the people who have it but then got it passed off. Sure, it basically target shocks you and only, which can leave you in... A tough spot, but so long as you pass it, it's not that big of a deal. Getting it at the end of a race, too. If you can AVOID the racers instead of trying to pass it, and I'm sure they will want to avoid you too, then you can just... Pass right by them and hit thw finish line.
