I’ve always adored this film, start to finish. I love how the broad performances and comic book stylings perfectly translate the EC Comics aesthetic onto film. I get what you’re saying about the second segment lacking an opportunity for more conflict, but that’s kind of the whole point. He’s an isolated, unloved, solitary figure, and he’s the first contact to an otherworldly force that will presumably overrun the entire planet. Jordy Verrill’s lonesome death won’t even be discovered, much less be recognized as the historical turning point it appears to be.

"Fluffy," the carnivorous creature from "The Crate," reminded me of the subterranean monsters in H. P. Lovecraft's, "The Lurking Fear." "A whiteish, gorilla-like thing with yellow fangs..." ("The Lurking Fear").
@geoffreyfyfe2248Ай бұрын
I'm fairly certain it was a Lovecraft reference. You'll note the creature was found during an Artic expedition and as anyone who's read "At the Mountains of Madness" knows, one of Lovecraft's favorite origin spots for his horrors was the frozen regions of the poles. Related, "Jordy Verill" is very much a comedic take on Lovecraft's "The Color Out of Space."

To answer the question right off the flying bat: YES. There are great horror anthology films out there (ASYLUM, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, etc.), but the standard bearer is CREEPSHOW. KWAIDAN (1964), a fantastic and excellent horror anthology from Japan, is the artistic and philosophical high watermark as far as horror anthologies go, but for pure fun and candy that tastes good but also rots your teeth, CREEPSHOW is the way.

Love the channel, love that you love this movie, but you need to lean in to the cartoon aspects right from the beginning, IMO. All that silliness sets the tone for the movie and I love it. I mean, maybe my favorite shot in the movie is the cartoon frame of Billie seeing the thing from The Crate. Lean in with me! Funny that for years (I saw this when it came out) The Lonesome Death Of Jordy Verrill was considered not only the weakest segment but actually the segment that sinks the movie and man I do NOT agree. The crazy cartoonishness, including King's performance, just makes it the actual highlight of the film for me these days. By the way, I love Knight Riders. Love it. It's a bit long and maybe drags a bit in the middle but it's oddly almost like an art-house movie in a weird way. Anyway, great overall review and as usual our tastes align so closely that all I can do is pick nits.

It's interesting that you would like E.G. Marshall's appearance to Ebenezer because he actually did play him once! Not on television or the big screen, but in a radio show - the CBS Mystery Theater which was about 45 minutes long and he was a great Ebenezer. Feeling as you do, why not go on KZbin and look up A Christmas Carol from the CBS Radio mystery theater and listen - see if it matches up? Another great video.
