The 'Fathers Day' corpse was played by John 'Martin' Amplas. Great review. Creepshow did very well at the box office and was very much constantly rented from the video shop here in the UK. It was a massive hit on tape back in the day. One of the best horror anthology movies that I keep going back to. Nice one.

This is an absolute Halloween staple. It's such a great blend of horror, comedy, and intentional camp. Its use of lighting and cartoon frames makes it that much better, and that score over the opening credits is a perfect mood setter. It's actually all pretty perfect to me.

I’ve always adored this film, start to finish. I love how the broad performances and comic book stylings perfectly translate the EC Comics aesthetic onto film. I get what you’re saying about the second segment lacking an opportunity for more conflict, but that’s kind of the whole point. He’s an isolated, unloved, solitary figure, and he’s the first contact to an otherworldly force that will presumably overrun the entire planet. Jordy Verrill’s lonesome death won’t even be discovered, much less be recognized as the historical turning point it appears to be.

I remember Meeting Tom Savini for the 1st time in 1982 @ a convention promoting this movie & bringing some props from it & saying there was a DELETED scene from The Crate where part of Adrienne Barbeau corpse pops up in the water. "Fluffy," the carnivorous creature from "The Crate," reminded me of the subterranean monsters in H. P. Lovecraft's, "The Lurking Fear." "A whiteish, gorilla-like thing with yellow fangs..." ("The Lurking Fear").
@geoffreyfyfe2248
@geoffreyfyfe2248 Ай бұрын
I'm fairly certain it was a Lovecraft reference. You'll note the creature was found during an Artic expedition and as anyone who's read "At the Mountains of Madness" knows, one of Lovecraft's favorite origin spots for his horrors was the frozen regions of the poles. Related, "Jordy Verill" is very much a comedic take on Lovecraft's "The Color Out of Space."

To answer the question right off the flying bat: YES. There are great horror anthology films out there (ASYLUM, TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, TALES FROM THE CRYPT, etc.), but the standard bearer is CREEPSHOW. KWAIDAN (1964), a fantastic and excellent horror anthology from Japan, is the artistic and philosophical high watermark as far as horror anthologies go, but for pure fun and candy that tastes good but also rots your teeth, CREEPSHOW is the way.

I loved this movie when I saw it back in the '80s. Even though I know it wasn't a great segment the one with Stephen King had one of the funniest lines. When the plants start growing all over on him at one point he opens his pants and looks and says "Not down dere!". I thought that was hilarious.

Love the channel, love that you love this movie, but you need to lean in to the cartoon aspects right from the beginning, IMO. All that silliness sets the tone for the movie and I love it. I mean, maybe my favorite shot in the movie is the cartoon frame of Billie seeing the thing from The Crate. Lean in with me! Funny that for years (I saw this when it came out) The Lonesome Death Of Jordy Verrill was considered not only the weakest segment but actually the segment that sinks the movie and man I do NOT agree. The crazy cartoonishness, including King's performance, just makes it the actual highlight of the film for me these days. By the way, I love Knight Riders. Love it. It's a bit long and maybe drags a bit in the middle but it's oddly almost like an art-house movie in a weird way. Anyway, great overall review and as usual our tastes align so closely that all I can do is pick nits.

I can't watch Creepshow late at night because I am a huge Arachnophobe (spiders and centipedes scare the crap out of me) and the sight of all those cockroaches the length of your finger makes my skin crawl. It's interesting that you would like E.G. Marshall's appearance to Ebenezer because he actually did play him once! Not on television or the big screen, but in a radio show - the CBS Mystery Theater which was about 45 minutes long and he was a great Ebenezer. Feeling as you do, why not go on KZbin and look up A Christmas Carol from the CBS Radio mystery theater and listen - see if it matches up? Another great video.

Personally, I prefer Creepshow 2. Although it lacks the visual style, the stories are stronger than most of these, and the acting isn't off-the-rails. I get that Romero was going for the comic style, but Adrienne's is the only over-the-top performance that works, and Tide You Over has such a drastically different vibe that it feels like it belongs in Creepshow 2.

Oof, wow. I disagree on the Jordy segment. It is not at all boring to me and I don't need someone randomly showing up in it, ruining the sense of isolation. I don't know, I find "Something to Tide You Over" to also be darkly funny as well and not super grounded "I can hold my breath for a looooong time!" I don't find the tonal shift very abrupt. Lol I have never heard someone say they play a horror movie for comfort. But I know what you mean. Ed Harris with hair 😂. You always make me laugh.

I saw Creepshow when it came out. It's like you described every thought that went through my head in the theater. I rooted for Stephen King, but his acting was just weak - and you think with him involved there'd have been more story to his sequence.

I like Creepshow. The Crate is my favorite entry here. However, it's not my favorite anthology. I actually really like Tales from the Darkside and After Midnight because all the stories are really good. I'm not a fan of the Cockroach one at all. It's more gross than creepy

To me, "The Crate" is the best part of "Creepshow." I don't really like the movie as a whole. The first two episodes really turn me off.

Not the best. I've always found it too goofy. I love several of the Amicus more but Dead of Night is best. No question
