So basically this is the story: Humanity grows intelligent enough to fly in outer space. We build a massive 7 mile ship called USS dreadnaught it's dark in appearance. The dreadnaught travels and comes across a primitive species of alien that have space ships of their own but aren't as advanced as mankind's. The aliens were so scared that they shot at the dreadnaught and the dreadnaught shot a warning shot which the aliens didn't know so they fired back and the dreadnaught destroyed some alien ships and fled. Stories from the aliens surfaced to others aliens and it was said that the dreadnaught was an evil ship that came from the Bermuda Triangle of space where things go crazy. Humanity got a bad rep and in the end were the boogeymen of space with the narrator saying we have a bit of mad in all of us which prevents us from going completely crazy. Of course if you want more detail just watch the video...

Honestly, I love the idea of humanity selling the idea that their survival through the "Veil of Madness" is because we all are insane. The funny thing is, is that if an alien ever truly did find out about anything of our culture they would still believe the stories about us: look at our myths, our religions, our modern life in general, and I doubt that the future of humanity will be any different. Imagine some poor alien scholar who somehow gets a copy of Lord of The Rings or, god forbid, one of the Friday The 13th films, and take it as literal history of humanity. Hell, what if they find out we play things like DOOM or Final Fantasy where we get excited over the idea of the world ending in a story just so we can proceed to commit horrible violence in a form of entertainment. What if they discover the activities of The Roman Empire? I don't imagine they'll be surprised by the gladiatorial games being a favored pastime of the citizens of Rome. Like, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if a Warhammer 40k style future is up for us. We're scary.

Holy shit this sounds like the days just before the formation of the Federation in the UC Gundam universe, but even more interesting. It also sounds like the backstory of Mass Effect. The first aliens the Humans met after using the warpgates near Mars were the Turians. They thought we were batshit crazy and eventually fired on us. The Humans let their pride get the best of them and they went full ham on the Turians and actually destroyed a lot of Turian ships. But then the Turians got serious and wiped out many more Human ships and sent their fleet towards Earth. The humans were preparing to make their final stand at the stargate to protect the Earth, but then Galactic Council stepped in and opened up communication. It turns out that even though the Turians had far superiors spaceships and they also had the strongest military in the galaxy. And a new race that no one else in the entire galaxy had ever encountered stood alone against the strongest military without backing down. The Turians were scared shitless of this new race and what would happen if they had time to learn from their initial defeat. The Council worked it out with the Humans and had them join their Galactic Community. But they were extremely wary of the Humans to the point that 15 years later they wanted to sanction us and even send patrols to Earth to enforce their laws. We had accomplished in that short amount of time what several other alien species had not even come close to in centuries or longer. But Humans would not dare let other species fuck with Earth no matter what. In fact, no one apart from Humans was allowed to EVER allowed to step foot on Earth. We threatened to fight down the last man, woman, and child if the Council tried to go there. They backed down, and a couple decades after that a Human was granted a seat on the Council itself.

It seems to me to be a really dangerous game to play. Since we now know that we're just in a bad zone what happens when a Supra Intelligence gets wind of us being "_monsters_"? Won't they come end the threat of us in a attempt to make the universe safe again. Or what if a conquer species decides it'd be a great way to become feared by displaying how ruthless and powerful they are by annilating the current "_boogyman_", us?

They can't enter the 3% zone for longer than a short while. They'd have no practical way of seriously damaging the human territories. Besides, humans are feared, but seen as reasonable, so not hated. Other species could react to a species attacking humans like you could react to seeing someone kick a beehive. Seeing it more as a stupid and dangerous move, rather than something that would make the attacking race respected. Not to mention that humanity had the luxury of stealing knowledge, technology, and recources from dozens of races that had been driven mad, given them a huge advantage that other races in the busy and competitive regions of 'sane' space did not have. You bring up interesting points and maybe they would indeed help negate any serious threat and protect humanity, at least for some time, while also allowing for a even further developmental edge. But the universe is pretty large, even though it may be insanely bigger than even far off human understanding can fathom*. It seems at a superficial glance to be a dangerous gamble to use this scarecrow methodology, even while still being known as reasonable. But I'm willing to accept it as a pretty standard natural occurrence to use deceit as a defense and competitive edge mechanism. Like animals that use false eye patterns , bright colors(some don't actually have the adaptations it denotes and warns against), or puff up to seem bigger and thus more of a threat and even make consumption of them harder to do. I'm also willing to concede it may be extremely more advantageous for humanity since it will deter any species from exploiting them when compared to what problems a more passive approach may cause(either way has pros and cons). It may even stave off another hyper-intelligent species that's far more aggressive while give time for our defence and offence capabilities to further develop. *What we consider to be the entirety of the universe may very well be more like a supra galaxy with millions more out there seperated by unfathomable, even more so than already conceptualized, space between them. Though there might be a bowl of petunias or a god eating penguin named Gary out there too, lol.

In reality we really are a species to be worried about. We are too unpredictable at least right now in our evolution. We rely a bit too much on our emotions. If we had no emotions like the Vulcans on Star Trek we could be great and could make much more progress a lot faster as a species. We are consumed by these emotions we can not control.

I agree but some side notes on your various aspects of your comment. Which the first one will help support it through a equation made to calculate how many intelligent(I prefer using hyper-intelligent to denote our level of intelligence for various reasons) species there are. There is something called the Drake Equation which states multiple factors that go into calculating how likely a hyper-intelligent species commonality would be. One of the more important factors is the species surviving themselves to be able to further develop into a viable space faring species it at least develop far enough to be detectable technology wise, like intelligently designed electromagnetic waves *Vulcan History and Varying Idelogolies:* The Vulcans were very much like us and even came close to destroying themselves with war. They chose to persue becoming less emotional in order to combat this self threat and that's why over time they adapted to that mentality. In The Undiscovered Country we meet a Vulcan that is part of a minority group that believe in retaining their emotional self and even embracing it.
