Those odd light fixtures you see are temporary construction fixtures. They are put in place when the original fixtures are removed, and you still want to be able to see what you're doing. We used several of them during the renovation of our home so that we wouldn't damage our lights.

I get so amused when you get SO grossed out by spiders. Believe me, those are little babies. I live in Mississippi and we have spiders as big as birds down here as well as snakes and lizards of all kinds. You get used to them. I have never seen the arrangement of kitchen cabinets quite like the ones here. Cool house.
