I think Malus was genuinely just an innocent kid at the start of the game, considering the wording of the prophecy at the end of Cornell's story, his own dialogue in your first meeting (especially the head pains around mentioning the castle) and the story of a certain other Dracula reincarnation in Aria of Sorrow...honestly, poor little guy is probably having his soul sucked out by Chaos as he's speaking! Dracula is pretty clearly just acting as him every later appearance, though.

If I had to take a gander at that "atmosphere" in older games you brought up in the intro, I think it's the low-res blurriness and in some cases, the lower framerate. Makes it seem almost like a bad dream where you can't see far enough ahead to make the best judgement calls before it's too late.

Reinhardt's grim resignation to the endless cycle of Dracula's rebirth, followed by the slow burn of the rose petals descending, was such a marvelous and enchanting setpiece as the flower descended onto the clifface framed by the almost idyllic shot of the destroyed castle in a sunset lake. The emotional weight of everything washed over me, and it was utterly sensational. It felt like a Final Fantasy 7 moment. So of course my dumb ass said "and then Rosa comes back to life" aloud. And she did. And I started laughing. I don't fault the ending for that though, it just makes the rest of the game even goofier to me, remembering that.

At last. The first of the four options on that poll. Although I voted BoS, I’m rather relieved we are starting with Castlevania. Plus I remember that Castlevania was 88. Vampire Game Overs: What is with N64 games being darker than most in their series? Definitely tragic when you think about it. Carrie suffering like that definitely gives me that “even the children aren’t safe” vibe I got from that one Yuka Mochida ending. 12:18 What the heck? Cornell’s Ending: All’s well that ends well? I’m happy for Cornell. It’s also best they don’t go the everything is sunshine now. There’s still damage done. Henry’s: The worst and average endings seem very contradictory. It’s like they didn’t even try with the average one. Like how does he feel very guilty in the worst and be like, “I ain’t too worried about it” the average one? But I do like the worst and best ones. Malus: The name Malus didn’t give it away? (Malus in Latin means, “bad.”) Edit: Ah okay. His bad endings are just kinda wacky to me. Imagine raising/marrying the dark lord unknowingly. I think the vampire transformations are the worst to think about, each having their own implications (Cornell transformed means Ada sacrificed, Henry transformed means the children aren’t saved, the irony of a Belmont being a vampire, and Carrie is self explanatory.) Reinhardt obviously had the brightest ending, while Carrie’s best is somber. Overall good stuff all around (except Henry’s average ending, that one sucks.)

Like this and altered beast and other games I don’t know I think I the only few games where a Werewolf ever gets to be the hero. I think it is nice that Cornell is a human and a werewolf so we can have it where a werewolf could be the hero for once.

I really appreciate this video. The hate against CV64 and LoD is totally unjustified and in my opinion what maimed the franchise from growing in the 2000's. This games nailed the 3D Castlevania in atmosphere, controls, level design, everything. However, there is a note i'd like to make: LoD is not a 'remake' of CV 64 but a remixed 'B version' of sorts, kinda of the dual pokemon releases. The new things are of course Cornell as a playable character (Henry is more of a side mode) and that some levels were redesigned. Cornell has a pair of new levels, but shares most lf them with the main Reinhardt/Carrie campaign. And on that topic, i believe that the original CV64 is the superior version of the two and the one that should be referenced. The redesigned levels in LoD are much worse than the original. The most notorious example is the Tower of Execution, which was an amazing vertical level in the OG (like an actual tower) and was turned into a more generic obstacle course on LoD. The new Cornell only stages are also pretty inconsistent in quality. The Outer Wall is good, but the Tower Art and the Maze are a terrible slog that go on forever and lack the ambient of the Castle Halls in the main campaign. Just that, I seriously recommend the OG and LoD just for the new campaign of Cornell

I played Legacy of Darkness recently and really enjoyed it... That said, I was an N64 kid, so I'm biased, it's basically a game I could have played back then! ... glad I didn't, though, because you're right, the N64 entries actually lean towards horror at times and I don't think my kid self would have handled the Vampire cutscenes, the boss Arachne or the Creature in the maze very well. If these games ever get remade, Charlie Vincent had better be playable... and a Super Hard mode, since he apparently sucks according to the bad endings x) (seeing through illusions is rather impressive, though, for an old man~) Honestly, even on Hard Mode the time limit is fine. I did it as Carrie, not even knowing there was one! If the clock had kept ticking through the many deaths I suffered, then I might have had a bit of a problem x) Her Bad Ending creeps me out, personally. Poor kid deserves to be happy, especially after Hard Mode xD Malus is kind of a sad character, in my opinion. I mean he's just some random kid, victim of a prophecy and doomed from the start, who essentially gets erased and turned into Dracula on his eighth birthday (probably during that one cutscene where he starts saying weird crap. Turns out it wasn't a side-effect of drinking Magic Nitro) 48:22 "Oh no~ My best friend (Death) came to visit and he's drunk again! My wife will kill me if she finds out!"

I seriously can't blame you for hating vampires. I've gotten blood drawn for medical reasons a few times, and gave blood months ago... and doing it still makes me nervous. Somehow I still hate needles. The same kind of heartless thirst for blood from vampires also applies well to a werewolf's hunger for flesh. Good thing Cornell's on our side. Inadvertently selling your soul to Renon, that's something else entirely. And Drac's dragon-centipede form dying? Probably the most explicit time the series has shown Drac going back to Hell when he dies, it's metal as fuck. Either way, I'm glad to see this big ol' video. I've been wanting to play Legacy of Darkness for a while now. It really does have that creepy atmospheric feel, and the various death traps along the way certainly help the horror vibes.

Colors WAS praised to high heaven when it first released, but now it's criticized very often for its very obvious flaws. (Crappy 2D sections, gimmick levels, and bad story and writing mainly) Most Sonic fans consider the best Sonic game to either be Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic Mania, Sonic Generations, or if they're feeling spicy SA2 or Unleashed. LOL. Vanilla+Legacy of Darkness Castlevania... sooner or later you had to cover the N64 game, one funny thing is that the little voice acting from vanilla like that scene you showed at the stage 2 (3 in Legacy of Darkness) is gone, same for the original intro for the two characters from the vanilla game as they have to pass the Foggy Lake like Cornell instead of being at the Forest of Silence, but their endings are still the same, also I find funny how you can trigger one penalty fight with all but Henry with Renon (which thankfully you covered it... and the only difference vs Death is just like how in Mega Man Battle Network you can do rematches with the bosses that move faster and deals more damage than the original fight), the bad ending with Carrie feels more realistic as Malus manages to decieve the kid compared to just showing that you sucked at the very last second with Reinhardt, as for the good endings+Cornell's ending, well, for Cornell it was clear that it was a prequel to Reinhardt and Carrie's story (hence the lack of a bad ending), Henry is like a bonus of sorts as both the good and all variations of his bad ending are just kinda meh, Reinhardt's good end feels like what you expected of having a miracle for Rosa and Carrie... well, she had endured a lot of pain and a peaceful time for a change is great for her. Edit: The JPN version of Legacy of Darkness has both Cornell and Henry unlocked from the get-go and you don't need a controller pak to save your progress (not that it matters in emulation, but if you don't have the pak on real hardware... that's were the JPN version shines... but probably language barrier can be a pain to deal with. Edit 2: The Castle Center "No place for beginners" lockdown from vanilla game is ALSO in Legacy of Darkness, any difficulty but Easy you can continue.

'What is a Git? A non-miserable pile of awesome videos!' I would be the first to admit CV64 and LoD did not impress me much when I tried them. That may have been because they were competing against Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, two games that revolutionized their respective franchises. It did have some interesting ideas though, such as introducing vampires as dangerous normal enemies. As with many games on this system it had a LOT of cut content, to the point that we couldn't have the four playable characters that were promised until the prequel (apparently the chainsaw Frankenstein-type was going to be a playable character named Kola before being reworked into an enemy). One discarded concept I liked the sound of was how some vampires would disguise themselves as humans before biting when your back is turned, but I guess that got turned into Malus tricking you. Sort of like a super-early Among Us, trying to spot the signs of vampirism. I always preferred Lament of Innocence for its slicker combat and story, and would love to see it remade and improved on, but these days ANY good Castlevania offering would be welcome regardless of dimensions.

That is because, in the late 18th century (just at the same time Richter defeated Dracula and temporarily ended the Belmont legacy) a massive movement of enlightenment and secularity started, and the grip of the Church on the world weakened drastically. It could almost be considered Christian propaganda, also mixing the alignments so that Order = Good, Chaos = Evil. Seeking knowledge, people like Barlowe, Carmilla, and real people Gilles de Reis (who likely turned to darkness after the unfair accusation and execution of his girl Jeanne D'Ark) and Countess Bathory (directly mis-Kana-fied as "Bartley") eventually were seduced by the powers of evil. Also, two games are set directly in ultimate times of darkness, during the world wars. Fun fact: From what I've heard, in the unholy scriptures, Satan isn't about destroying the world, but about complete lack of restraint by codes, laws or morality. Never is stuff like murder, rape or assault encouraged, it just isn't condemned.
