I feel like mortal kombat has its comedic side for the same reason as something like final fantasy. Take away the humor and you'll get some really dark and cynical shit, sometimes reaching the point of getting too real. It really helps you realize just how much we need comedic relief in our lives.

After MKX, all these endings seem pretty tame. Sonya's ending? She is forced to choose between her daughter and her ally, and the former, Jax, is murdered by an assassin. D'Vorah? Clones Shinnok in the form of magic bug men. Ermac? Turns into Shang Tsung. Kitana? Sees what would have happened if Raiden didn't cause her death. And Kano's is the worst. He turns his own son into a brutal mercenary, among other potential pupils.

metacoola, the deal is that the Dragon King, Onaga, was the original emperor of Outworld. Since the warriors are zombies and wraiths, they were more than likely alive when Onaga was in control. Either that or Onaga just has awesome might over the amulet.

Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is the first game I remember playing (at the age of 5 no less, my parents apparently didn't care about the ESRB back then), LI Mei was always my favorite character, not sure why I liked her so much (hell, she's wearing my second least favorite color), I just did for some reason (at least until I unlocked Frost, then she joined the list of "this character is my favorite for an unknown reason"), so when I played through the whole arcade with her and got her ending (well, after waiting about two years, Moloch is a bitch to defeat anyways, try doing it at the age of 5 without knowing the concept of blocking and comboing very well), I wasn't happy, I mean, my favorite character was killed right in front of me and is forced to serve the bad guys forever, and I CARED for my favorite characters back then (still do really, don't judge), so when they ended up dying I always got angry, and then I thought they did it again with Frost and I was like " these people must really hate me, they've killed off two of my favorite characters in the SAME GAME"

There's a lot of endings in these games where the player character gets screwed, especially in MK 7. I'll name some examples: Reptile in MK4 gets betrayed by Shinnok and killed. Li Mei in Deception ends up serving Onaga due to her getting screwed in Deadly Alliance Nightwolf in MK9 gets his Matoka Wolf Totem possessed by Shao Khan, turning him into a werewolf demigod under Khan's command and plagues Earthrealm with lycanthropy.
