Koh Chang is a lovely place however the way you described the roads reminded me of the contrast between the resort accomodation and other parts of the island. We hired locals to take us by boat to places around the island. We went to a beautifully made restaurant on a cliff overlooking the water. Lovely bold wooden structure, awesome food, crazy stairs/ladder/footings to get there.
