Creepy Parcel Box - Secure Delivery Storage With LED Eyes

Our parcel delivery box receives delivered packages of all sizes, and securely stores them for later retrieval. But our box has something extra: An in-house Arduino-controlled panel that tells you a delivery has been made and when it got there. It's disguised as a family photo but when a delivery is made everyone's eyes light up in the creepiest way possible.

Great idea. Add a wifi module to the Arduino and you can get it to email you and alert, that your phone will alert you about via your email app. You could go overboard and add add a GSM SMS module and a cheap text only SIM card and have the box text you via SMS when a delivery is made. Off to watch more of your videos.

Her name is Ms Bellum and I want one of these lol Joking aside I live in an area where package deliveries are almost impossible to successfully deliver because Porch Pirates always steal my packages before I get to them. A box like this would be really useful.

The box works, when they actually put the packages in the box. We're getting about 60% in the box and the rest on the porch. But at least some of our stuff is being protected.

Thank you very much! The LCD is a 2X20 LCD Character Display Module. Google that term and you will find a variety of display colors and dozens of places to buy them. Pretty easy to set up with an Arduino and fun to program too!

I like it. I would like to do something similar but install a magnetic latch - like used for security doors in a building. Control the latch with a NFC reader in my phone. Wave the phone by the door and it opens. Or tell Siri to open it.

I would have expected that the visual would indicate the number (or wight) of the packages: one package, the lowest pair of LEDs light up; two packages, the bottom two; etc Very nice work Did you consider security pocket-screws? Not because it's better, just because it's more complicated

We could do that. We thought of a few other things to add but decided to get the system built with the necessary pieces and then see which way it goes with usage. The box is 2x4 sticks so building another one will be practically free, but we will wait until we get some experience with this one.

How did those uninsulated leads going to the LEDs not short together under the heat-shrink?

No shorting. Each pair of LEDs uses a single resistor, so the two similar leads on each LED were soldered together. One twisted pair goes to the Arduino ground and the other goes to one of the digital pins. There are five pairs of eyes and each pair has it's own PIN, which allows us to individually control each of the five faces and make the eyes blink.

That actually happens more often that I'd like to admit. At this point we are seeing about 60% of deliveries actually go into the box. The rest are either on the box or simply left on the open porch. So we're going to rebuild the box with something more obvious, and maybe make it talk to people about how packages should go into the box. We'll see...

Yes, correct! These were the spares from the Alderaan Shard garage door project. The one we used in the video turned out to be bad but we swapped it for another after we figured out where the problem was.

True, but we are in a low crime area and we figured this was all we needed to deter porch pirates. But we are also planning to build an improved version of the box that will be even more secure.

I like the size of this box. What are the dimensions?

It is 23" deep, 27" wide, and 44" tall. Some deliveries are being left on top so we are thinking of rebuilding it with a more obvious door on top that is also difficult to balance packages on. But other than that we are very pleased with this box.
