How To Build a Bat House - Habitat for Endangered Species

We built a bat house for our friend Dave to replace bat habitat lost when someone cleared the land behind his house. This rocket-style bat house is designed to resist wind and weather better than a standard bat house, and we live in a hurricane zone so that's a good thing.

Many thanks! For the poles got slightly wider diameter pieces of pipe and used them as sleeves that we bolted on to connect the poles.

What keeps the bat house from spinning on the pole? Don't you need to somehow attach them together? This is the design I want to build, so thanks for the demo on construction.

It's a fairly tight fit, and the small surface area means there isn't much wind force on it. We figure if there is a problem in the future we'll put a screw into the pole, but we wanted to try it without one first.

Bats don't prefer the smell of cedar as they are sensitive to strong smells.

That could work but we were told slots were the best way to go for the species of bats that live here.

I see it’s polyurethane 👎🏼not good for bands in a hot box. Loved the super informative construction video & all the great tips minus the chemical spray!❤

Water-based polyurethane. I worked with our local bat management people and they said water-based was OK and would extend the life of the cedar. We're hoping it will work.
