Killing of the brothers of the emperor is not a reason of the empire downfall !quite the contrary my friend ! It is the main reason why they lasted so long ! The downfall starts when they stopped this practice ! You have the understand this was a sacrifice of the sultans ! Because some prominent men of the empire like generals and veziers would use these princes and alot more iinocent lives would be lost just because a vezier or general wanted to support a prince that would bring them more prominence ! So dont get it twisted ! This was not brutality ! This was a sacrifice of the dynasty ! This tells me you havent studied the subject thorougly! I recommend you do before you bash these ppl and accuse them of ruthlessness ! Many if not all of them would mourn these killings of their brothers for years

Did you'll know that most of these traditions were much similar in China in the imperial ages. The only difference was women in Chinese Harems were brought from aristocratic families. The battle for the throne between consorts in the name of their sons was just as similar and brutal. China's first female emperor Wu Zetian has an amazing story of how she came to power from being a low ranking concubine.

One thing you may be forgetting is the ottoman turks were incredibly competitive in the beginning. And before they outdid the seljuk byzantine and mongol enemies, the enemy would always clandestinely support the brothers or uncles of the head beis, not only this but brothers and uncles of head beis could and often would open their own tribal chapters in other regions inside anatolia, thinning out the numbers of the central tribe and making their people more vulnerable. They were not as you might believe any different to plantagenet or other noble english dynasties. Who killed family members, friends and allies for the threat of high ambition or instability within their court of operations.

According to Turkish tradition, the blood of the royal family is not shed. That's why the princes were strangled to death. Do not think of the brotherhood in the Ottoman dynasty as your own brotherhood. The prince was appointed as the governor from a young age and they were subjected to strict education. each sibling was located in a different province. fratricide did not appear out of nowhere, lessons were learned from the previous fights for the throne and such a practice was started. Previously, each prince formed his own army and went to war for the throne. therefore the state was weakening and the authority could not be fully established.

Actually the "death race" part seems a little bullshit information. First of all, the "photograph" you claimed to be Hacı Salih Paşa actually belongs to "Salih Hulusi Paşa" who was appointed as Grand Vizier only for one month in May 1920, at the very end of Ottoman realm and during the dawn of Republican Turkey. There are two statesmen with the name Hacı Salih Paşa and the younger one died in 1828, long before the invention of the technology of photography. I have read most of the credible academic historical studies about Ottoman Empire in different languages for 25 years and have never met such a bizarre tradition. After the watching the video, I made google search in different languages for a long time and only found some cheesy articles published in tabloid magazines written by non-academic writers in English language and lacking even one single academic reference. Both medieval and contemporary Turkish language chronicles are quite honest about the unpleasent traditions in Ottoman Palace, from opium addiction to pedophilia among notables. In such detailed and non-partial narratives, there is no single Turkish record about your so-called death race. Another stupidity of this claim is the bullshit translation of the term Bostancıbaşı, which is wrongly translated as chief gardener. Although Bostan means "orchard" or "vegetable plantation" Bostancıbaşı is the name for CHIEF SECURITY OFFICER OF THE PALACE, NOT THE CHIEF OF THE GARDENERS!!! At least this is a little more meaningful to think that chief security officer can be ordered to execute a high ranking official (such as Lavrenti Beria's personal murders of high-ranking Soviet officials by Stalin's order). This kind of brutish entertainment is less likely to be possible in 1820's, during the reign of "Mahmud II" who is very-well known with his full scale westernization of Ottoman bureaucracy and society. Mahmud II can be considered similar to Peter the Great of Russia and his reforms. Sultan Mahmud pioneered the establishment of most of modern Turkish ministeries, a modern system of justice including three supreme courts, initiated a policy of partial secularism and equal citizenship for Muslim and non-Muslim subjects of the empire. Mahmud imported every aspect of western lifestyle and even banned traditional Ottoman costumes and ordered all bureaucrats to wear European style uniforms and trousers. Is it possible to claim a Grand Vizier was forced to a death race during the reign of such an enlightened ruler? The fratricide and harem parts are okay, but I am quite disturbed with such low-quality orientalist approach in your content. Sorry to press Dislike button.

If you recall Roman history, you may recall that Caracalla killed his brother Geta, before Geta could kill him. Then he killed 20,000 of Geta's followers. This elliminated the possibility of a civil war and it stuck in my mind while you were talking about killing relatives. Ottomans I am sure knew that it would be unwise to leave more than one possible relative to be sultan after the old sultan had died. They were familiar with Roman history and all the many civil wars they had to endure.
@donrog5035

Civil wars in Roman Empire were between generals for the most part. It was rare for imperial children to compete for the throne. So roman history is a bad example for the justification of such practice. And Caracalla and Geta hated each other way before they became co-emperor. I don’t think he killed Geta because of throne race, it was personal

Yep. Gruesome it was, but it made the sultan stronger. Cause he had to prove himself worthy to get there. The downfall was caused by the women in the harem. When they started getting involved in politics, the sultans lost their power. If there was no harem and thousands of women fighting to put their sons on the throne, the Ottomon would've thrived.

@@afrahf9010 "to prove himself worthy ..."? "It made the sultan stronger..."????? You seem to admire such barbarity. Actually the sultan did not have to prove himself stronger, IF you paid attention, the candidates grew up enclosed in the palace, and in some cases, locked in cages, by their own mothers, for their own protection. They were educated, but they were seeing their own brothers as their mortal enemies, to kill, or be killed by them one day. That made all the sultans psychotic, and eventually led to the demise of the whole empire. You may admire the ottomans all you want, the rest of the world sees them as barbarians to be avoided at all costs.

What you do not grasp is that in all other empires or kingdoms, killing relatives was ocassional and or circumstantial. In the Ottoman empire relatives murder was institutionalized, systematic and culturally endorsed. Together with skinning one alive and impaling as a standard ,formal punishment. Also way different to engage in these practices hundred of years BC , in the Middle Ages or as in the case of the Ottomans, in the 18th century (when European thought was going through the Enlightment period)

Fratricide was brutal but a custom that settled after centuries of governmental experiences. Surely isnt right by todays standards but one has to remember that the practice wasnt just deemed to the turks but rather almost every mknarchy that came to be. Now there a couple problems with the explanations in this video. Fratricide prevented potential civil wars that would lead to all the more deaths. Throughout the history of the monarchy’s one can infer that any individual who has a rite of ruling will knfact pursue it. Its not pretty in any sense but one that was deemed necessary for the time. These were also times in europe where royal blood would also be spilled to a great extent. The main reason as to these atrocities being commited to this extent was the law that enabled all relations to the royal blood to have a the rite of ruling. This was lated changed when mehmed the conqueror took charge. He recieced the throne at the age of 13 from his father after having him relent the throne due to his insufficiencies. The father later takes the throne but dies. So mehmed became the padishah twice in that sense. No blood spilled until this point. Later the palace politics take a turn for the worse and however ugly it may be he sees whats to come. Out of grief and sadness he later changes the policy to the rite of ruling to the sons of the emperor and the sons only to prevent moor bloodshed. This does limit this practice to skme extent but does not disable it. The old and the wise policy abolishes this practice but ultimately leads to the doom of the empire. Because of the faults of the system being implemented. The rulers and the potential rulers are bohnd to the palace and the palace only for their safety. But this restricts the governing capabilities to an amazing extent which later devolves central power and leads to smaller “lord” like rulers to emerge, gain power, and to get greedy. And suleiman the great is known for the reforms of justice that reduces the corruption to a minimum. His main concubine at the time has control too much control over him and frames his son for murder so that the justice of the great emperor may kill him lawfully. Textbook palace politics. This was for the sons he bore with him to assume power. This infact is considered to be one of the main reasons for the decline kf the state. So he doesnt just kill him to assume power. Why would he? A ruling emperor to be overthrown by his own son needs to have a lower power position but at this point he was the supreme dominant ruler he was and no one dared act against him. This restored stability to the region for a while. Mind you these were the golden times and the burden of keeping it the golden times were too much so no chences were to be taken. Ottoman civilisation flourished until the vezir that practically ran state with two padishahs giving up their power in his lifetime. After he dies it basically all goes to shit though. Misinterpretation of islam through the greed of the so called men of religion allow this. The same kind of corruption plays in fact a much bigger role kn europe at the time. Europe recovers while the ottoman empire goes into dissaray combined with the industrial revolution, you get the downfall. So before judging the people of the time one has to consider the norms of the time. In a broader perspective every single person was as brutal as the other, if not in one then in another way. History is written by the eventual winner and those are the european powers majnly england and france. So before condemning people to such judgements one has to remember every aspect. Thank you for bearing with me until the end. I hope this helps to put perspective into the current stature of the once glorious ottoman empire.

The brotherkilling ended after Sulaiman died. And some historiens das this was the reason for the decline of the empire because whenever a sultan wanted to weaken the power of the corrupt janidschas they killed and replaced him with a dummer relative. The best example is Osman II. And when a Sultan a Reformer finaly came to power he only has one relative and there was so much rebellion along the janidschars that he has to kill his last relative to make Sure that he could not be replaced no matter what.

No, it ended when Amhed the first ascended. Sulaiman had two of his sons killed meanwhile there is still debate if it was actually Selim who caused Bayazids death. Selim's son Murad killed his brothers and Murad's son Mehmed III killed 19 of his brothers. Even after Amhed declared a stop to the practice both of his sons Osman killed his younger brother Mehmed and when Osman of removed from the throne his Uncle Mustafe killed him. After Mustafa was removed from the throne he was replaced by Kosems son Murad. Murad ended up killing the rest of his brothers only sparing Ibrahim because Ibrahim was considered to be mad.

Then there was the Janissaries, the children of Christian subjects were stolen at age from 5 to 10, used as body servants, calamities, trained as Soldiers, Clerks and Public Servants, even castrated and used as Public Servants or Harem guards.

I guess it depends where you are or we’re on the Totem Pole in the Ottoman Empire, the view was pretty good from the top and OK to a lesser extent as you descended, until you were 4 or 5 layers from the bottom, then you had no rights, were subject to the whims of those above you, were taxed when those above you were not, had extra tax if you were a non-Moslem, had no right of redress or access to a court, were, at the lowest levels, subject to instant death on the whim of those above.

Considering that the Ottoman political system was - on various levels, not just inside the palace - based on infighting, and at the same time unable to make reforms and adapt to changes... And the empire was mostly ruled by people completely disconnected from the real world... It is very surprising the Ottoman Empire survived that long and got so big. It's probably cuz their adversaries weren't much better either. The entire world was instable feudal systems back then.

Timur's empire fell because he gave 4 areas to his sons. After his death, the whole Empire fall because the siblings couldn’t see eye to eye. it was the end of the great Empire. This happened with the Seljuk Empire to. Also the Sons of Sultan Bayezid almost lost the Ottoman Empire. When MEHMED's fader Sultan Murat II died. Byzantine emperor Constantine Xl wanted to put Orhan on the throne. Because Orhan was Murat's nephew who lived in Constantinople waiting for his uncle to die, and then took the throne from Mehmed2. But Mehmed came first. They tried to remove him from the throne and appoint their own men(Orhan). Even Mehmed had the right to inherit the throne. That is why he makes these laws. He didn’t like it, but it was necessary. This is a very instructive video, but there are some inaccuracies. and a little exaggerated. Some Christian families gave their Child voluntarily, so de can have better life in Instanbul. Because in the Ottoman Empire were good schools and from a slave you could become someone great. 90% off theirs Vezir was ex slaves. Empire with possibilities.

Surprised the Köçekler and Tavşan Oğlani weren't mentioned. They were also young boys aged 7-8 taken from Christian nations and made into dancing prostitutes. They were trained for about 6 years to sing/dance/play instruments and when they were ready, the boys would perform dances while cross-dressed in female clothing for adult mens' entertainment during festivities and celebrations. After their performances, they would be used for the mens' sexual pleasures. The practice was banned because of Ottoman modernization and because men kept fighting over the boys (which one got to rape/molest the boys, keep them, etc.). Both Köçekler and Tavşan Oğlani were widespread from the 15th-19th century and almost every tavern, coffeehouse, bathhouse, etc. employed them.
