The Fallout show is a genuine conundrum. If you know NOTHING about Fallout, then the little pokes and hints at the lore will go over your head, and you'll presumably feel confused and annoyed at the inside jokes. If you're a fan of the games like New Vegas and such, this show is like watching someone take your beloved household pet, filet, flay and fornicate with it, put on its' sopping crimson hide, crawl around nude making animal noises and then roll over expecting belly rubs. Maybe if you're a specific kind of fan on the spectrum or love. The ones that like 3, 4 and 76 JUST enough to spend money and clap at 'member berries, but not enough to have any stake in the games, so changing it is just fine and no issue. Perhaps this is the mass audience. Tourists walking through an amusement park where every fifth-world shanty town has a different dumb gimmick, where everything is saltine thin and puddle deep, where they see references to current year politics for cheap emotional attachment and all that other stuff. Instant oatmeal with high fructose corn syrup and fent. I originally posted this under an EFAP highlight, but I feel like it needs to be said here Regarding the lore and Shady Sands, one thing everyone misses in this conversation is that the NCR is basically Fallout’s equivalent to the New Republic in Star Wars, except a lot worse. The New Republic is Luke, Han and Leia’s legacy, and Star Wars fans were understandably pissed when everything they accomplished was undone in TFA in a single scene. The same is true in Fallout except YOU are Luke, the NCR was founded at the end of Fallout 1 as a direct result of the Player’s actions, but unlike the New Republic which doesn’t get elaborated on or explored we see the NCR grow, in Fallout 2 Shady Sands has a statue of the first game’s player character right in the center of the city and the Republic has a confirmed population of 700k, new buildings are going up, pre-war cars are being repaired, and new roads are being paved. By New Vegas they’ve annexed more cities and have had another 40 years of growth, it’s safe to say the NCR has a total of 1million citizens by that point, it’s existed for 100 years and has the following settlements under its control: Shady Sands itself, Boneyard which is home to the Followers of the Apocalypse University, Junktown and The Hub which are the two other founding members, Necropolis and Dayglow which are two entire Ghoul cities, Vault City and Arroyo which are GECK paradises, as well as Gecko, San Fran, San Diego, Redding, and New Reno. And then this damn show comes in, it plops Shady Sands where Boneyard should be, off-screens it, acts like the several other cities within the NCR don’t even exist, and writes off the entire NCR as “it didn’t work out.” Even just the idea that Shady Sands itself only had 35k residents is laughable, but what this show does is a slap in the face to the fans.
@ahoramazda686414 сағат бұрын
Interesting comparison - it seems obvious, but I don't remember anyone comparing NCR with Republic from Star Wars. But the problem is somewhat deeper. NCR has no real fans, their fan base is literally astroturfed. After the release of New Vegas, people believed for thirteen years that NCR was a post-apocalyptic superpower, which was fueled by old developers who gave NCR undeservedly great advantages. Not only did they find GECK, but they gained a population of millions, which was partly backpedaled in New Vegas, where NCR suffered 100 casualties at the Hoover Dam and this became the reason for the memorual. I.e. if NCR had maintained the same population by the time of Vegas, such losses would have been considered insignificant. But thats not the point. The old developers love NCR too much, so they even gave them working trucks, as one of the old developers mentioned in his twitter post. Although there is no mention of this in the game and if NCR had working transport, they would not use Brahmins at all. But that didn't stop fans from imagining that NCR had TANKS and stuff. If NCR had such equipment, they wouldn't need the Courier, don't you think? But that didn't stop fans, as Frontier showed, which was the peak of NCR fan fantasy. But the problem is that after passing this peak, people began to lose interest in NCR and were ready to “sell” their favorite faction for the opportunity to get a generic show with generic Mary Sue. This, to me, is an indicator that quantity does not mean quality. Instead of boycotting Bethesda and demanding that the show be decanonized, NCR fans swallowed it when corrupt tubers gave them headcanon explanations. Therefore, now you can see comments from the category “NCR was always weak, bruh”, which have not appeared for thirteen years. NO ONE thought that way before the show.

@@ahoramazda6864 Literally everything you just said seems to have been something you invented in your own head. You even complain about the DEVELOPERS doing exactly what you say they don't. Get that jelly mold outta here.
@ahoramazda686414 сағат бұрын
@@Calbeck, Wha? I just gave clear examples of the inconsistency of the old developers who clearly sympathized with NCR as their favorites, and give them many advantages, even if this makes no sense. They gave NCR a population of over a million in Fallout 2, which makes the conflict with Vault City laughable considering VC only has a population of a hundred people (not counting slaves). To put it simply - the old developers are obsessed with NCR just like Bethesda is obsessed with the Brotherhood of Steel, which hinders them creatively. If NCR has worker transport as Chris Avellone said (if I'm not mistaken) why is it not mentioned anywhere in the game and they still use Brahmins? If NCR has such a large population, why don't they just zergrush House and Legion? I've played Fallout games back to back, so moments like this are more noticeable to me than to players who judge NCR and other factions based on jumbled memories.
@Slender_Man_18612 сағат бұрын
@ahoramazda6864 ok you already lost me with "NCR has no real fans, their fan base is literally astroturfed." I don't think you know what that word means, that's like saying the fanbase for The Empire in The Elderscrolls is astrotufed, they're basically the protagonist faction. Players will naturally enjoy seeing an already likeable faction grow due to their actions, the only thing that changed with New Vegas was the number of people who were exposed to the West Coast lore. Frankly, if any faction has an astroturfed fanbase, it'd be the BoS who've been artificially elevated by Bethesda. In Fallout 1 they were a bunch of dogmatic isolationists, your first interaction with them is being sent out of a sewer-slide mission just because their gate guards wants you to stop bothering him, meanwhile you're just trying to warn the BoS of the very serious threat The Master and his super mutants pose to everyone. In Fallout 2 we see the consequences of their stubborn ways, they've started to stagnate and die out, it's pretty easy to beat the game without even coming across them, they're just too content with hiding away in their bunkers and trying to wait out the apocalypse meanwhile everyone else is already forming new societies from the ashes. Then suddenly Fallout 3 comes in, throws the BoS on the other ass end of the country, with no explanation as to how a faction that was in decline could spare the resources and manpower needed to traverse 3,000 miles of post apocalyptic wasteland, and they're suddenly these super duper good guys who've dedicated themselves to protecting people who they previously looked down on, their growth and elevation as Bethesda's protagonist fraction couldn't be any more blatantly artificial if they tried, they even got nonsensical over the top super weapons like Liberty Prime and The Prydwen solely because Todd wanted to jerk them off. As for your point about "if they had maintained their population growth, 100 soldiers dying in a single battle would be insignificant," this is actually insane. If 100 US soldiers died today in some military operation in Iran, would that suddenly be considered "insignificant" just because the US has a total population of over 350 million? Hell no, people were pissed when only 13 servicemen died during our withdrawal from Afghanistan, and the NCR is far more similar to the US than it is to say the WW2 era USSR who were basically throwing bodies into a meat grinder hoping it would jam. Not to mention, a lot of the soldiers the NCR lost during the Battle of Hoover Dam were the Rangers at Boulder, where the monument actually is, of course the NCR was going to mourn the loss of some of their best who bravely sacrificed themselves to stop the Legion's advance and win the battle. Regarding "if they had vehicles, they wouldn't be using Brahmin for transportation," you do realize the industrialization and mechanization of an entire industry doesn't suddenly happen all at once, right? To go back to WW2, even in the 1940s a lot of militaries were still using horses for their logistics, and frankly the NCR isn't even at a WW2 level of development. Sure they have working cars and their president even has his own Vertibird, but those are still luxury items, the player's car in Fallout 2 almost immediately gets stolen in New Reno due to how valuable it is, and I'm willing to bet Kimball's bird is a 40+ year old relic that the NCR got from Navarro. I'm not saying the NCR is out here building entirely new things (like how the east coast BoS somehow turned the scrap metal from the Enclave's land crawler, an already absurd vehicle, into a fucking airship), but they do have mechanics who are able to perform matenance on pre-war vehicles, we directly see this in Fallout 2, and as for NV we're on the very outskirts of NCR territory in that game (plus if we're being honest, and say what you will about The Frontier, it's a miracle that mod got moving vehicles to work in the Gamebryo engine). There's also the issue of resources, the pre-war US and China kinda fought a whole war due to the lack of resources, the earth would still be depleted even after 200 years, I doubt finding stable nuclear material (emphasis on the word "stable") after an apocalypse would be easy, if anything the quest Come Fly With Me shows that it could be dangerous trying to find unspent nuclear isotopes, and oil wouldn't just magically respawn back in the ground ready to be drilled up again.
@TurKlack12 сағат бұрын
You know what's worse? When you try to argue with friends and family about the NCR and all they say is: "I don't know the NCR so I don't care, Fallout Show good!" When asked why they aren't just playing New Vegas for example, they say.: "It looks old. Not gonna touch that." You would forgive their actions if they would admit they know nothing about Fallout lore and can't possibly make a correct assessment and should therefore take the word of those who do. But *No,* they can't do that either. They just have to say that Fallout Show good because the pretty colors were pretty.

Fallout 3 may have taken a step in a different direction for the gameplay and tone. And while it could be argued that it was good or bad or somewhere in between, it was at least a step in a certain direction. Fallout New Vegas took the time to slowly make its way back to the original path while making sure to push the advancements of what came before forward and even taking into account some of the changes of Fallout 3. Fallout 4 saw this and took a couple of steps back onto a simpler, more mass market friendly trail, while erasing alot of the progress New Vegas had made. And while I and many other fans heavily disagree with those steps, we can see the logic behind them as awful as they may be. The Fallout live action series took its pants off, shaved random parts of its head, dribbled drool down its chin and proceeded to run back to the start of the journey then scribbled all over the road map and proceeded to defecate it's way toward an obviously terrible new direction. Anyone thinking this show is true to Fallout needs to have their head checked, it isn't even true to Bethesda Fallout.

@@DeepStateMarxistI couldn’t disagree more. Fallout 3 was just another step down the direction of poor writing & world building that Bethesda still continues to put into their games. There were plenty of people that disliked aspects of Oblivion & ESPECIALLY Skyrim. They continued dumbing down their games to make them more accessible because that means more money. Nothing wrong with that I guess if you don’t care for what your original fans care about. Also I don’t see how you could think the speech system in 3 is even remotely more well done than in NV. The amount of options alone with actually having more skills & perks usable in dialogue seems way more along the lines of letting the world breathe. Even if you build your character a certain way, you’ll miss checks here & there, but also find super niche options that some people might never find. I just find that infinitely better, especially since a percentage chance to succeed/fail in 3 just feels so bad to me personally. I feel like it breeds people that want to save scum all of their checks instead of just giving people multiple set options to get through a dialogue scenario like NV does.

Just cause its got dogshit roleplaying and main quest writing doesn’t make it incompatible with the world lol. 76 and the show LITERALLY take things built upon or well established in previous titles and shit on it. Super mutants only becoming a threat where there are large quantities of liquid FEV and evil doers to use it? Naw some just got into the river or something, folks drank it (its really why they are in 76) The NCR, that faction thats been growing and overcoming the trials of forging statehood in the post apocalypse while staying in the spotlight for most of the good games in the series? Done got nuked, Vault Tec done did it becuh E-BILLLLLLL Its retarded

@@spicymilkshake6600Basically. For canon's sake, the _vague_ idea of those two games are part of the lore. For Tactics: a detachment of the Brotherhood went east and ended up crash-landing somewhere in the Midwest. We don't know *_exactly_* what went down... but they had to confront petty warlords and gained the favor of the tribals there. Eventually, enough time passes that new BoS recruits from here don't even know the basic history of the Brotherhood.... or who the Maxsons are (Caesar mentions this). For 3: a Vault exile follows the trail of his/her runaway scientist father. Said father comes into conflict with Enclave remnants over ownership of the only viable water purification system in the area. At the same time, another Brotherhood detachment has splintered and is undergoing an ideological "civil war" of sorts.

It’s just bad… The best I can do is pretend the shows not cannon… BGS treatment in general of their IPs is just… ego driven, poor writing for the most part. The absolute lack of respect for previous games, and of course Emil and Todd were working w the showrunners, this is what they wanted. Their treatment of the NCR is just beyond dumb, and feels really petty, like, screw anyone else’s creations, all hail the constantly morphing Brotherhood, the golden child of BGS. They just need to stop, hell they can’t even create their own homegrown DLC that’s half decent… *cough, Shattered Space 😂. Not much else to say, the shows just beyond damaging to the lore. It feels petty, like they wanted to clear anything left from 1,2 and NV so they can create something far worse. And the fact that people think it’s great…. Is just astounding, to each their own but…… why… Conclusion, 0/10

I went to a friend's wedding back in mid to late August, and I sat with his uni mates at a lull in the post-wedding celebration. They were talking about this Fallout show like it was the best thing ever, not even exaggerating or joking for that matter. I can't even stress how painful it was, practically on a soul deep and metaphysical level, to hear them talk about the moments in the show as though if they were the coolest things ever (the ghoul vs Maximus scene, and the Yao Guai scenes in particular), that it respected the lore really well, the writing was 'hype' and so on. I've never had to force myself to smile and nod that much before. It all clicked though when I asked them what their favourite Fallouts were, and they collectively said Fallout 4.

I feel like the writers intially wanted Maximus to be kind of a psycho. Having your character have rage outbursts at people getting promotions over him after showcasing his clear lack of qualifications, having everybody instantly assume he'd cut up his only friend's leg just to get ahead implying that this sort of behaviour is expected from him, having him coldly let a palidin die because they don't deserve their position as much as he does, ect. On paper, it paints a picture of a ruthless, but inexperienced scrub who'll fuck over whoever he needs to to claw his way to the top because he feels that he deserves the respect he's cosntantly failed to earn, who then becomes softened and strengthened by his interactions with Lucy. But then partway through writing, they got scared and backpeddled by changing the framing to have all his shit moments have more of a justification like everyone accusing him just to fuck him over, Titus spending his dying gasp giving Maximus every reason to let him die, revealing that his friend cut themselves trying to get out of being a squire and having Lucy summarise any bad shit he did as 'Welp, it's the wasteland and I've already killed or harmed people in self defence, so it's all the same thing'.

@ZedRen-s8g9 сағат бұрын
It's this thing where if they portray black men as violent, and stupid. It will be called out as racist. So they tried walking it back, and double and tripled down on lazy writing techniques to try and get you on his side. The problems that I could summarize it as: 1: Logos: Due to the inconsistent direction and tone of his character, there is no clear path or purpose he serves in the writing other than a generic "Protagonist". Because the character just flip-flops between that at the mid-point, while he started out as a villain protagonist. There is little to no through line that makes logical sense. Even if you argue it's based on emotions it is still is inconsistent with how emotional people act at times. Even irrational people still have patterns in their behavior. 2: Pathos: His motivations at the beginning, middle, and end of season 1 are misaligned. He goes from wanting to climb the ranks. Then takes to defection pretty quickly, just because one dude makes him angry. Which then starts the 'tard rages are like an adult child flailing at everything. Then he wants to stay in the experiment vault, because that life is cozier. Then at the end he decides to go back to the brotherhood. Why does he not have a shred of the Brotherhood's beliefs if he was raised from childhood? How is this suppose to resonate with someone? 3: Ethos. If what I typed above, Cree's coverage of individual episodes, AND this video did not convince you that the show's writers fail in every way to understand what "Fallout" is. Why do you think said writer's should have be given any decisions with authority over the lore regarding the franchise?

IMO - the main problem with Bethesda is that they do not come up with new content, but flanderize the old one to the point of absurdity, such as retrofuturism, or delete it, as is the case with NCR. This has already led to the series becoming depleted of ideas and turning into a generic post-apocalypse. The world cannot recover from the disaster because “brand recognition, this is post-apocalypse, you guys!”, so new and interesting factions cannot appear, because humanity lives in barracks made of garbage and rummages through garbage cans in search of a 200-year-old Salisbury steak. Meanwhile, old and interesting factions are being removed because they will make the world and the relationships between its inhabitants too complex for low level writing of Bethesda. This is partly why they remove everything unique that distinguished Fallout from other games, so now ghouls are literally zombies, and Vault-Tec is literally a generic evil corporation, raiders always look and sound like in Mad Max and Borderlands. At the same time, the show suffers from the same modern plagues as all other series, so the main characters are Mary Sue and her token black friend, as in The Force Awakens. Oh, and in the Brotherhood of Steel there is a "trans-man"... Considering that in Fallout 4 Maxon was foaming at the mouth about synths, that differs from humans in one tiny detail. Such an intolerant organization would never endorse transsexuals, Bethesda simply bend over real live politics. In addition, they do not even follow their own ideas and rules. In Fallout 3 and 4, Bethesda whipped up an anti-Chinese and anti-communist hysteria that was not present in Fallout 1 and 2. But in Fallout TV Slop, corporations and capitalism are suddenly to blame. This is partly why I don't think Bethesda will retain most of the ideas and canon from that series for Fallout 5. They're too inconsistent and have no plan, besides, their fans have no principles. NCR was the most popular faction in the New Vegas fandom, everyone loved them, rooted for them and believed that NCR was a post-apocalyptic superpower. But as soon as Bethesda said “Na-ah,” no one disputed it. Because NCR had no real support and love from fans, it was all astroturfed. People sell this faction for the opportunity to watch a show at the "Defiance" level (i.e. cheap post-apocalyptic sci-fi), only for a well-known brand.
@Pharis11123 сағат бұрын
and you know what, I would of accepted NCR getting nuked by say, some enclave remnants pissed off at the NCR for hunting them down....But no, instead it is done by Norm because he was a jilted simp.
@danpaz948522 сағат бұрын
I had no idea there was someone non-binary in the show, especially when they're in the BOS and they somehow are not discriminating against them, considering that in FNV, they treat Veronica, one of the companions you can get like shit and even outright tell her to have children despite being openly a lesbian. Also if they were really a cult, they should be doing the stuff that I mentioned with Veronica except with more hostility like pressuring them to conform to whatever gender they want them to be (I can think of one cult, that already does this in America rn towards a certain group of people already, infact its pretty much why detransitioners exist) instead of doing it with Maximus, who is being bullied for no apparent reason, not even for his skin colour, when you see that there are other dudes with the same skin colour like him.
@ahoramazda686416 сағат бұрын
@@Pharis111, I don't like NCR and consider it the worst faction, but even they didn't deserve the quick disappearance offscreen. In addition, the presence of a postal service and police in NCR does not destroy the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. It is obvious that societies will recover and develop, and not remain at the level of settlements in Fallout 4, where hobos go back and forth, doing the simplest work and building barracks from pre-war garbage. Bethesda thinks that even the slightest desire for something pure and civilized will turn-off people... But this is not true. Back in the days when Fallout 3 first appeared, mods were common that removed clutter from the floor. Because destruction is one thing, a completely different thing is that people live in dirt and garbage and don’t even try to fix it. P.S. I partly understand the logic and concern of Bethesda, but it is in vain. Even our real, ordinary world has more developed or less developed areas, calmer places or more tense. People would hardly be upset if Diamond City were not the only corner of civilization in the Commonwealth. But Bethesda just wanted to create "our own Hub from Fallout 1, but wAcKy". But flanderization is very annoying and doesn’t work, because old fans don’t recognize the old locations and ideas, because it have been changed beyond recognition... And new fans haven’t played the old games and won’t understand what and why.
@ahoramazda686415 сағат бұрын
@@danpaz9485, Can you read? I said that Bethesda does not respect their own ideas and canons, which they added to Fallout 4. I wasn't talked about Vegas. Read this fiery speech from Maxson about synths and then try to say "Yes, that's what the leader of the PC organization would say." Maxson: "You're the physical embodiment of what we hate most: technology that's gone too far. " I didn't say that the Brotherhood is a cult. This misconception comes from couple of phrases of NPCs who are unfamiliar with the Brotherhood or believe in stereotypes about it, which for some reason has sunk into everyone’s memory. Maybe instead of writing a righteous comment, you should try reading the OP? P.S. Father Elijah is also not PC, considering that he separated Veronica and Christine, as I remember.

It was a dangerous world and people acted like it. I thought I was alone for a hot second thinking that me shooting some NRC trooper in the head 10 times without him dying was a function of gameplay and not something that is literally happening in the setting regularly. But hey, maybe they aren't that stupid and just want to justify likening a bad show without admitting it's a bad show.

I think amazon used bots to boost the initial online perception of this show because (thankfully) a lot of people realized how ass it is changed their tune on it relatively quickly

This show's filler is so bad that it has me reevaluating the Bounts arc. At least that one wasn't over 25% of Bleach's runtime.

7 Hours!?!?! With all that editing. Crikey mate. This must have been a Herculean task. Good on you for completing it. I don't have that kind of resolve. This show had heaps of praise when it first aired. Glad people are calling it for what it is. Terrible.

7 hrs talking about "the great watering down" of one of gaming greatest franchises and what it's spinoff TV show continues to do down that path, I'm here to listen and mostly agree.

See, see. Emil isn't the worst or the most incompetent writer. There is a whole bunch of them directing this show.

The tv show completely ruined ghouls too the point Ghouls from the games should’ve been long ded and turned into feral ghouls, all because of Mf zombrex. Also how the hell did the ghouls in Necropolis lose against Super Mutants when they have Wolverine regeneration thanks to the fking show

On the topic of cryo freezing people, there is a whole army facility dedicated to that in Fallout 2, the problem they had, is that people getting unfrozen would melt a few minutes after being out because their cells got fucked up by the freeze. I don't blame you not remembering or knowing that since to get to that base you need to side with the most boring mafia in Reno and get to the end of their questline so the patriarch reveals the base to you. Actually having just checked the wiki, the cryogenic storage is only a small part or the biological experiment Level of the Sierra Army Depot, as for people melting after being frozen the one guy you can unfreeze does melt from Post-cryogenic syndrome according to the game. Guess the army should have bought Vault-tec cryogenic units instead.
