I have had my 19-38 for a year and I just wood work for a hobby. I initially had a bit of trouble centering the belt , but once got it dialed in it has been great. I love this machine. if you have a lunch box planer and get tired of the noise it creates. With the drum sander I have used it on occasion to plane up a piece as well .. the paper lasts a long time if you use the eraser . So if you're on the fence and your work flow might work with a drum sander I say get it and have a good time .. a tool you can sort of use with out going deaf.

Hey Casey, just wanted to compliment you on this video. You did a really good job describing the sanders. I've been looking into one but haven't bought one yet. I do have a Laguna bandsaw and dust collector and have been really happy with them. Looked at a lot of video's on drum sanders but this one you did has convinced me to go with the 19-38 Laguna sander. Thanks for the video and once again, I think you did an exceptional job on it. Jim

Great review, Casey. I've been considering a drum sander purchase for quite some time. Your detailed explanations on machine functions, as well as pro/cons were excellent. This review convinced me to move forward with a purchase soon. Thanks!

Casey I finally picked up the Supermax 19-38 yesterday. Probably my most irresponsible purchase yet. I'm so excited!

I should have bought it or the 25” from the start. You always want the next model up after you make the purchase! 😂 buy once, cry once

Super helpful. Any idea why the 13” brush/drum combo is so much more expensive?

What 90 degree elbow part(s) do you have there? I have the same sander and wouldn't mind picking one up.

Look up the Rockler 34432 item. I have really liked the versatility of it and have also added one to my table saw.

You want to talk about chip out...Try running rose wood or ebony through a planer. I'm looking at a drum sander for this very reason.

Exactly! I have been getting into guitar building and Ebony and rosewood are a big deal. I would sell my planer in a heartbeat and just have a few drum sanders. 👍🏻

Have you made a cabinet for the 19-38 yet? If so, I would love to see it. I just purchased the 19-38 myself and am considering building a cabinet for it.

Not yet! I have seen some awesome ideas for the 19-38 cabs so I have a plan. Just haven’t executed it yet. I loved this cabinet for the 16-32! So much extra storage

Great Video, Thanks, Can you use the same paper on both with just trimming it a little for the 16/32?
@CReevesMakes

Yes you can use the same paper. I just buy bulk rolls from SurfPrep sanding and trim to length.

How much material (.010) do you think is a reasonable amount per pass?

I'm late to the party but wanted to ask anyway... After buying the 16/32 and finding that it was too small, why did you buy the 19/38? You underestimated your need and "wasted" the $1000 (depending on when you bought it) on the 16/32. Fool me once says that you should have jumped to the 25/50. The 19/38 is only a couple of inches bigger than what you've already grown out of. Are you going to do it again? I looked at the problem and decided to go directly to the 25/50. I've done what you did so many times that I swore that it would never happen again. The difference between each was $500 (less but I can't remember). They've gone up $500 since ($2,500 for the 25/50).

Great point! Although I would love the 25” the 19” has been perfect. The largest thing that I run through is 17-18” guitar body planks. If my shop were bigger, I’d go 25” all day long. The 19 has been perfect…so far 😉 lol. Thanks for the comment and feedback!👍🏻

can these be used on aluminum and steel?

I don’t think it would yield the results you’re looking for in the long run. I’d say possibly on aluminum but probably a no on steel.
