Wish I would have watched this video before I built my sled. I have most of the features that you have but did it differently. Had I known about the Kreg slides I wouldnt have felt so uncomfortable with a single runner sled. I was concerned that there would be play and even some binding with only one runner. This forced me to eliminate the sliding zero clearance feature. I made mine with HDPE throat plates that are removable for different width kerf. Have the t-track on top as well. My blade guard is basically a box with a Plexiglas top so you can see the blade come through the fence and a 1/8 inch steel plate on back to ensure the blade never reaches your hand. Wrecking the blade is a small price to pay. I will send pics if your interested but it really doesnt have anything over your design. Thanks for the excellent video and this enticed me to subscribe. Will definitely be watching for your videos. Paul

Great sled. I like the left side 45 degree concept. If you make a secondary stop block for the left side that overhangs the 45 degree cut by an inch or so it will give you enough adjustment to set a stop on the offcut side of the 45 degree cut. Then there is no measuring to make sure the bevel is the same. Just slide it to the stop block and every bevel will be identical.
@CReevesMakes
@CReevesMakes Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay! Yes I actually figured that out after doing a couple of boards quickly saw the ease of using the block on the off side of the bevel. 👍🏻 always learning and improving!

A+ on fit, form and features! Need to go back and see exactly how the sliding kerf works. Only think I would add would be long handle holes on the left side. My sled just got them and I'll never look back. One feature that I'm dying to see is a micro adjustment feature for the front sled. William NG got me to a 1/1000 but over time things change with wood. Absolutely the best design, as long as the adjustable kerf does not add errors or trouble.
@CReevesMakes

I had thought about cutting slotted handles in it but got tired of overdoing it. I may still add them. It would aid in lifting the sled.

Thank you very much. I apologize for the decimal numbers as that is my engineering/ design brain kicking in. I have a decimal to fraction chart in my shop that I use often. For those numbers, 2.44 is 2-7/16”, 1.63 is 1-5/8”, and .94 is 15/16”. I round to two decimal places in my program so sorry for that. Thanks for the question! Let me know if you need anything else. GREAT build and not sure how i missed this video. The two piece base / fence setup is awesome for shifting form CC to Dados. On your saw, I assume the blade arbor plate is on the left, so any blade thickness differences can be adjusted for ZC. Only two questions: 1. How the single miter bar setup has held up over time, relative to accuracy. I would be concerned of that bar possibly shifting, since it carries all the stresses for proper registration. 2. Has their been any warping on the sled base, since only one side is laminated? My shop is in a very humid environment, and all table tops are double laminated, or at least HEAVILY coated with poly on the underside to restrict moisture intrusion. Finally, the weight cut is likely very helpful.
@CReevesMakes
@CReevesMakes 11 ай бұрын
Hello there! Thanks for the comment! You are correct the fixed arbor is in the left so the blade builds to the right. The single bar has been perfect since building it. I have dropped the sled twice and it’s fine. I know to not push hard on the right side of the sled so I let my left hand do most of the work. A waxed saw top and sled make for effortless cuts. No warping yet. I was thinking about that as well. I live in the northwest near Wisconsin.

One of the most most impressive sleds I've ever seen. Beautiful looking as well - which never hurts. My question is: How long do you think it will be before you have to replace the right side of the sled? After trimming up that ragged kerf multiple times it's going to get smaller and smaller. 10 years? 3 years? Just to be clear, I do not see this feature as a design flaw. Not at all, in fact it's bloody brilliant! ❤

I’m on my fourth sled and still have things I want different. I do believe I’ll be making this one to try it out. The one runner and bevel side makes so much sense to me. Do you find yourself wanting Infeed support for wider cross cuts? I know with my Incra on my sawstop I desperately need this. 10” is my max and even that is sketchy with the short bars on the Incra. Great video. Im glad i found your channel. You also have me wanting to add a cordless handheld vac in my shop! -Ben Rudman Dog Creek Sawmill & Woodworking Co.

Nice sled design. I really like the left side 45 degree bevel feature by using the single miter rail under the sled. While some may like the laminate surface, I actually don't and find it too slippery. A well sanded and poly'd birch plywood surface is best for me and provides just the right amount of grip vs. ability to adjust the part being cut. On the underside it would be perfect to slide on the saw top.

But from your design, it looks like the rear fence is only secured to the base on the non-sliding part of the sled. I also have a SawStop and there's only 11" of width on the left side of the kerf cut. Do you feel that's stable for the rear fence to be attached only on one third of the base width?

I like your design. My question is why is the sled so deep. Additionally since it is so deep how did you work out the outfeed table to let you get full length of the sled for cuts. Did you put a stop on the outfeed to keep you from going past your blade guard piece in the back?
@CReevesMakes
@CReevesMakes Жыл бұрын
I wanted at least 24" depth on cuts as I need to accommodate larger trays and such that I make from time to time. I have an outfeed table that is just below the depth of the miter slot so the sled can rest on it if needed.

Really well thought out design! I love it and I love the look too. Looks sharp. I had just one or two questions or thoughts. First, what about a dust channel on the back fence. I see several sleds to a small chamfer where it connects to the base to allow dust to collect without messing with the cuts. Have you been experiencing that? Also, how has the lamination been working out? I'd be afraid of slippage if it were me (beginner). Finally, newbie question, what would be the advantage of laminating plywood as opposed to using melamine?
@CReevesMakes
@CReevesMakes Жыл бұрын
Hey David! Yes I added the chamfer and it works really well. The groove only affects very thin laminate pieces. The laminate is holding up amazingly well and I chose plywood because it holds screws better than melamine particle board and MDF.

Man that sled is flippin' Awesome and it looks amazing!!! Are you going to sell plans for it. How about building one for a job site table saw, would you make alot smaller?

Thank you Jerry! Plans are on my website (link in the video description) and I have a friend who modified the design and made it for her jobsite saw. All of the dimensions are tunable.

I've thought it was the nuts since I first saw it, and been waiting for your vids. Looks great and I just bought a Sawstop so I am surely gonna buy your plans. Awesome all around as usual. Thank you.

Been watching for a while now amongst other great woodworkers. I love how you have really met form and function in your workshop not just the sled. I was wondering what the majority of items you make with not just the sled but in your workshop?

Thank you very much Paul. I mostly make furniture for our home and then I mix in shop projects and some crafty gifts around the holidays. It varies greatly but the mobile (casters) tools make it easy to adapt to almost anything I need to do. Thanks for watching!

Great innovations in this design. Do you find that using one miter bar makes it difficult to keep everything really square? Did you bother with the 5-cut method to set the back fence?

Well thought out. Excellent execution. My 2 cents is that next time you use your mask, change the particulate filters for the recommended 3M vapor filters

Can't wait to build mine - this one seems pretty huge, though! Do most people find such a big, deep sled useful?

I do but again its all personal preference. I make larger panels, cutting boards, and trays, so thats why I made it this big.

I built a feature-rich sled based on plans from King's Fine Woodworking a few years ago. It worked very well. Yours goes beyond it in some ways. The problem was that it was so heavy, I'd look for ways not to use it, which was often. I finally scrapped it and made a one-sided sled with only a back fence that weighs about a third of what the original did. I love the aesthetic and functionality of your sled, but I think it will be a while before I'm tempted to make another Cadillac sled. Admittedly, yours look lighter than my previous one.

Yeah I admired Kings sled as well! Same thing as you, I didn’t see the point of a massive base with wide front fence. Thanks for following along and for the comment. I appreciate it. My sled lives on my saw so it has to be a Cadillac! Lol

@@CReevesMakes I used my table saw for all my rips, so the sled's on and off constantly.

This sled makes my attempt at building a sled look like the RED HEADED STEPCHILD OF SLEDS my bro.. I love the laminate on it.. It makes the red track stand out even more.. Cutting out those shapes was cool too man. I like it! I also sub'd to ur channel too btw. Keep up the great work.
