That Karazhan Crypts earns its spot on these types of lists, though. Recently went back for one of the secret quests in the anniversary event, and there really is no other place in the game quite like it. The emptiness and poorly polished nature of it really adds to the overall creepy feeling. The layout is almost like a mix of horror and liminal spaces.

The dead orc in Apothecarium is probably the orc who was stationed there by Garrosh to keep an eye on the Apothecarians. He was there from Cata to Mists of Pandaria, after which in Warlords of Draenor instead of him this corpse appeared.

I think the quests in azj-kahet in the spider caves warrant a place on this list. Albert the undead pathfinder who is slowly getting eaten by baby spiders, his quests to find if any of his partymembers survived the attack and the endquest with the almost-jumpscare of a MASSIVE, shadowy spider on the ceiling actually gave me a physical reaction in front of the monitor lol wow has never ever given me that reaction before and I've played since vanilla. That questchain will stay in my memory ❤

There's an NPC called 'intent shadow' in the basement of the Cliffside Beacon in Hallowfall, and if you ask it 'what are you?', it repeats the question back to you, then takes your shape. Which would be less terrifying if it didn't then act exactly like a fucking weeping angel from doctor who from that point forward, following you every time the camera isn't on it, until eventually you look back and it's just gone. I have never jumped at anything in WoW, but I fully SCREAMED when I realised what was happening, it followed me halfway across the zone before it vanished!

The Path of Victory is ridiculous. There's so many skulls there that they must have killed millions, if not billions of Draenei for there to be enough bones. I don't think that many Draenei fled Argus.

Actually the people of Pompei were not really preserved. It's their negatives that remained. Giuseppe Fiorelli poured paris into the uncovered holes to preserve their shape as he assumed those were the voids left by decomposed bodies. The second summoning circle in the blasted lands was the end point of one of those really long vanilla quest chains where you travel the world. Even had a poop quest, because Blizzard can't get enough of those. And then the story continues when Demon Hunters meet the guy helping you all the way down in Legion.

Yeah, and the elite you had to kill at the end was a Nathrezim named Razelikh the Defiler iirc - and fighting him on that little mountain was eight bastards in a five bastard bus. You could tell if someone had tried to do the quest recently by the number of skeletons surrounding the foot of the thing.

#2 has a quest line regarding it, in which you help a demon hunter summon and "imprison" a dread lord in his own body. The burnt bodies are the remnants of the last ones to try and thwart said dread lord.

The painting is probably meant to just be like a movie thing; horror movies and horror amusement parks would always have something like that (similar to the painting with eyes following you) where a portrait would decay and then turn back, just something creepy to give a horror vibe.

The Harpy Baby in Exile's Reach is just an Easter Egg, the same LD that worked on Arathi Basin Revamp put the same baby asset in the Farm Area :) - Cheers! Pretty common for LDs on WoW to have a "signature easter egg" that they repeatedly do on any zone they work on (not that I would know............. :P)

Lore-wise, trolls have wicked regeneration powers. So it would make sense to use a troll as a shooting/throwing target dummy. Unless you hit in a vital spot, you can just collect your arrows/throwables and the beast will regenerate it's wounds by the time you walk back to your shooting spot.

Those bears in Cata HIllsbrad that the Forsaken are using as living spider nests are kinda horrifying. The other boring Hillsbrad answer is the Sludge Fields but everyone has talked about that and you can write that off as Stillwater's doing but the Forsaken injecting bears with Spider eggs to breed spiders is horrifying, you also have to kill the bears in order to harvest the eggs.

We had a guy in our vent server back in the day who would not stop talking about the road of glory (in that really redflaggy way). I remember as a kid even picking out that it was a weird thing to be like, really into. He rage quit our group though one day when we joked about playing with a dead rat because it was "too gross." And as a 13 year old I had to stop and wonder why that was too gross for the guy who was basically beating off to a genocide.

i like to think about how absolutely freaked beyond belief i'd have been if i had happened to even think to mosey into the karazhan crypts when wow was new and i was a teenager, on an old clunky 2004 pre-hd monitor in the middle of the night, expecting nothing but more dead empty unfinished zone but had found that room and gone into the water and had seen... That. That's the type of shit that'd have convinced me iw as experiencing something that's not really in the game, having a bad dream, but not being able to wake up and wouldda had a panic attack or something lmao
