After having replayed through as a wizard just recently, I have to say it’s entirely possible that rather then wanting the Augur to have access to anything, I felt it was more something like “Ancano is dangerous, he needs to die, the Dragon Priest in Labyrinthian will break out soon, need to deal with that, Savos Aren is unworthy as an Archmage for the coming age. The College of Winterhold, the only remaining beacon for proper magical education for the next generation, needs a more capable hand at the wheel.” They waited and provided just enough guidance for you solve everything, forcing you to grow in the face of that adversity and become worthy of the role, then for the man in your way of a promotion to die, and more particularly the man who would be more suited to taking the role by seniority to witness you save the world first hand, and crush a Wizard who he couldn’t even touch, securing his recommendation you take the job. I found it VERY interesting when, at the end, they make a point of addressing you as Archmage, despite knowing very well you haven’t been given the position yet. They’re forcing the issue in a way. In a sense, everything turned out perfectly for them.
@SaintAbsol Жыл бұрын
This is an interesting theory. I'm not entirely sure I believe it, but you might be onto something here. Plus, adding to this, it's entirely possible for you to be both the Archmage of the college, as well as Thane of Winterhold, which would do wonders to start softening the local's opinions on magic, further helping to secure a future for the college.
@hitomisalazar4073 Жыл бұрын
I... find that interesting. I just don't buy it. I mean in a meta sense you're becoming the Archmage because Morrowind did it, then Oblivion did it. But there is a slight difference between how it's done in Morrowind and how it's done in Oblivion and Skyrim. In Morrowind you have to be.. at least mildly politically savvy to get the Archmage to step down, showing you might have some sense of how to deal with people. You also needed the stats that said you actually were good at magic in general. In at least a few fields. Having a strong grasp of magical theory, the skills and dangers involved, and the responsible uses of (theoretically). In Oblivion and Skyrim however? Well... you don't need that magical expertise at all really. You don't need a deeper understanding of magic. In fact in Oblivion you actively are rejecting understanding magic in Necromancy because Traven is basically a radical lunatic on crusade. You were picked just because you were his tool for that Crusade and survived it. Really you should have been a Knight of the Lamp instead of the Archmage. Similarly the College of Winterhold has a lot of things that needs particular skills and expertise. On the dangers of magic. Politics and how to diplomatically work with the Nords of Skyrim who are innately distrustful to Magic for the most part. You see a lot of dangers of inept use of magic, from you uncovering the Eye of Magnus to the Augur of Dunlain and our good friend there Arniel Ghosting himself, or how magic has made some members of the college a bit unstable (like Collette and the Illusion master). Just at the end of the College of Winterhold? I don't feel like the Dragonborn really attained any level of mastery to really handle the job of "Archmage". They did, like Oblivion, achieve a status fitting of something like "Grand Protector of the College" perhaps. A blunt stick to enforce rules which is basically what you get with the Aftershock radiant quests and Tolfdir seemingly taking charge of the day to day stuff as the actual Archmage. That your title is basically an empty figurehead that doesn't even get used as a showpiece (Hell the NPC barks never even seem to realize you're the Archmage, thinking you're just a member still which supports it for me), that he gives you a fancy title and then just sends you out to kill things causing damage while he actually conducts the College's administration. Though I honestly think Mirabelle would have been better. She was level headed. She was skilled. She seemed to have no problems handling people and getting respect out of them as pretty much no one has anything bad to say about her (Unlike Tolfdir). But well.. the games seem ill disposed to admitting the player might have limits and might not be the greatest thing ever. Heck I was mildly surprised that after the Civil War they didn't go "... you know what, forget Elisef, the Dragonborn is now High King of Skyrim!". I mean not ENTIRELY surprised. But there was definitely a part of me that figured there was like 25% odds on them doing it... Even though the Dragonborn similarly shows little signs of understanding the Nord culture, Skyrim's government, and so forth (he has to ask what Thanes and Jarls and Housecarls are after all). So always kind of sad for me that Mirabelle was just killed with zero fanfare. Even though she was holding her own in a struggle against a mer with the power of the Eye of Magnus, dying a hero's death. They kind of treat it like "Oh and Rosenkrantz and Gilderstern are also dead".
@Neuviletteiudexofmemes Жыл бұрын
@@hitomisalazar4073 You’re mastery of those things is assumed, of course. Some of the weight is on you as a role player to build yourself in such a way that you are, in fact, worthy of said position. If you’re going by Lore, you are a nexus point of the God Head’s dream, a “Prisoner” the avatar of a Dreamer outside the God Head, in addition to being “The Last Dragon Born”. You are effectively a God, to the point where Hermeaus Mora, who can speak and unmake every other god in existence, puts on a production to entertain you. To appease you. Mastering magic to you is literal child’s play. You can max all fields of it within days in game. Effortlessly. You can interpret yourself as a “Blunt Stick” because you don’t try to fill in the role in a more role play styled way, and instead are just taking the game mechanics at face value. And political savvy in Morrowind…? I recall you certainly COULD yes, but you likewise could just challenge him to a duel and murder him in the arena.
@hitomisalazar4073 Жыл бұрын
@@Neuviletteiudexofmemes Well here's what I mean about worthy of the position. As a roleplayer, as I do try to roleplay these games. I see the role of Archmage not just "I have hit 100 in several schools of magic". That makes you that blunt stick I pointed out. You're power, but not Wisdom necessarily. The role of Archmage (should at least) be something other than just a measurement of who has the most power. And there's touches I liked out of other mages guilds I missed (or wish went longer). Like the start of the Skyrim's Mage's guild I think is the best in the series, right until you get trapped in Saarthal. I like that when you get to Winterhold you'll find out about the tensions. You'll have someone halt you mentioning rowdy Nords looking for fights. You have to prove you are invested into being a mage to get past (I usually get tasked to summon a Flame Atronach, impossible unless you either put points into Magicka growth, were an Altmer by default, or put effort into Conjuration due to its over 100 point casting cost). You get a nice little lecture, a tour, a class on a new type of magic to the series (I just wish Wards actually were GOOD for anything really, they drain magicka way too fast to be useful without exploits). And the idea of going to Saarthal, to see how Ancient Nords lived and utilized magic is a fascinating idea. I want to know more. Like a more in depth version of the Lectures at the Arcane University in Oblivion where you could hear lessons on what the Doomstones are. Actual academics and understanding. Increasing wisdom, even if the Oblivion mage's guild didn't require any magical talent to speak of. It's not something I have to make up out of, well really nothing because the story line doesn't give you that. I can always BS a reason. But considering the Dragonborn then almost assuredly faffs off to who knows where before Hermaus Mora consumes him and traps him in Apocrypha (I would be VERY surprised if that wasn't the canonical story come Elder Scrolls 6, if they mention anything, due to the general fear Bethesda has of establishing things about former main characters)... are you really worthy? You beat a threat. But what did you really do to prove yourself a leader? You saw Savros Aren's complete ineptitude in the Ghosts of the Labyrinthian Dungeon, so examples of what not to do I suppose. I don't think the Psijiic Order was really grooming you for anything in terms of Leadership. I think they just saw it as a chance to claim the Eye of Magnus. Which did end up well for them. Like I can respect the theory (probably a lot more satisfying than being a figurehead while Tolfdir actually runs everything for most people), don't get me wrong. It's not a personal thing. It's me pondering and thinking structure and just how I was feeling about things. Though part of my general dislike of the Morrowind started trend of "We MUST make you a leader of all of Tamriel's X" is that... well they usually don't do a good job of framing it up for me, and they don't actually let you have that role regardless. I think the Thieves' Guild in Skyrim is the best I ever felt about that style. Because instead of just getting to the end of the story line, you have to prove you're the best thief around. You have to work your butt off to make the Guild a presence across Skyrim again, making powerful contacts and friends that the guild can lean on. By the end of it? I feel like it was well deserved. And I feel like the greatest thief in the province. I even get a little tribute for my trouble showing that my title isn't just an empty platitude. Not asking for much, I can work with what's provided. But those little touches. Makes the difference for me. Touches I felt lacking from the Mage's Guild where I do technically have to use magic (Making it better than Oblivion's in that regard). But... I don't feel like the wisest academic by the end of it. And considering my only reward is a bedroom in a place that already had a bedroom, access to crafting tables in a place that already had crafting tables, a title that does nothing, and Tolfdir running everything anyway while I'm gone? I dunno. Just something missing. As cliche as it is to say, I do think "Mods fix this" is one solution. As I recall one where they bootlegged in a Spellmaker, after you completed the questline. And the idea that somehow in all those events you gained the wisdom and insight to create new spells was something to fit that. And it was fun running around with things like a Cloak of Fear and Frost spell on hand or a Sticky Flamethrower (like the Wall of X destruction spells) of Paralysis spell. Other solution was if there was some extra quest line/stage after that involving the city of Winterhold itself. Maybe having the college help rebuild it, or depose Korir out of fear of him storming the place eventually, or something that could have made it feel a bit more satisfying and solve a lingering tension that otherwise goes unaddressed.
@Neuviletteiudexofmemes Жыл бұрын
@@hitomisalazar4073 My point though is that, that 100 in a magic should mean more then “my spells go vroooom”. It’s up to us to make mean something. If you’re point was that the College drops you too fast into the chosen one stuff, I agree, which is why I always use mods to stall the quests between reporting to Savos about the eye, and when it appears in the college and Psyjics visit. So I can live a life in the college, “research” the cool modded spells in things like Midas (which need rare ingredients across Skyrim to secure) do the various other mage related mods installed bit by bit. Set off on other ruin delves to modded in dungeons (which I’ve modded to have better rewards and spells in to offset their massive size and scope). Bit by bit, become someone worthy of being Archmage, in your play-through, then trigger the Eye “finally being excavated and placed in the college”. But you said something else interesting to me. Hermeaus trapping the last Dragonborn in Apocrypha…? Now why would he do that~? He already got what he wanted. We, the audience, were entertained by a huge storyline in which he got to be our ally. On our side. People are invested in him, now, he’s a fan favorite God. And what happened as a result of that? It was retroactively established that he’s the most powerful god in the verse, and stands unopposed in his quest to obtain all knowledge. That portal he makes for us is canon, and it’s OBVIOUSLY canon. Because his motive, from the start, WAS you. He could have killed Miraak at any moment. On a whim. Why let his plan go so far? Because ol Herma Mora is a trickster first and foremost, and with his sight of the tides of fate always did he know how this would play out. He didn’t just want a Dragon Born as a Trophy. He wanted the hearts and minds of those beyond the Godhead on his side. And sure enough it handed him the world. Remember that he may put on a good act, but Herma Mora is Meta as all hell. He’s very much aware of the worlds nature, that we could turn him off at any given moment, and that his world will end truly and utterly, with no Kalpa recycle, the moment we lose interest in it. So as the master of fate ( and the puppet master who controls all other gods if he needs to we now realize from Onlines new expansion) why wouldn’t he manipulate things to keep them entertaining? Why wouldn’t he set the world up for Elder Scrolls 6, 10, 20 Etc. Hermeaus will probably always avoid directly becoming the players enemy, because why wouldn’t he? He knows he’d have to lose.

I actually think some (if not most) of this more was actually genuinely considered to be implemented into the game and whatnot. Especially with the whole hagraven-like character design thing. Whether because of time constraints, negative response in playtesting, because of the opinions of some boss at Bethesda, or for whatever reason, it was cut. At least some of it was still left in the game. This is interesting lore, and some of it it seems very plausibly true, at least to me.

I think it's important to remember that the Augur of Dunlain's dialogue can't be skipped, similar to Daedric Prince's and if you exit conversation with him, you're forced to restart. So perhaps he's on a similar level to them. Or, perhaps, the very same storm that destroyed winterhold managed to destroy the wards as well. Perhaps, there were indeed strong wards around the college but the storm was managing to destroy them, so the augur of dunlain tried to do an experimental spell to strengthen the wards by connecting himself to them and using one of his unique spells to try to keep the college safe(and in the process try to take a large amount of the magic into himself) . Unfortunately, all he managed to do is extend the wards until just before the storm ended, losing his body in the process, with his soul still being connected to the college's Magicks, which would explain the damage the college still has as well. And if those wards were placed long ago, perhaps the mages at the time didn't know how to replace them. One problem I have with your theory is that, as far as I can tell, the Augur is bound to the magic flowing through the college, and the only way for him to leave would be by taking all the magic with him since it is him, yet the magic still remains after the whole college questline is complete. Never mind. You addressed it

That excerpt from Shalidor’s Insights really looks like a note/memo from a writer or quest designer to an artist or level designer, describing what the cell needed to look like for Septimus’ quest to take place there. The same artist or another in the same department probably needed some mysterious looking text to put into Shalidor’s Insights, and they had that note lying around, so they used it, probably with the expectation that nobody would bother trying to translate it.

Agreed completely. While I love many of Camel's theories, I hate to say that I just don't think Bethesda thought this deep. While I lowkey accept this as my headcanon, I think its more likely many that Bethesda knows as much about the Augur of Dunlain as we do. Which is almost nothing. And IF this was Bethesda's plan all along, they need to be working for the CIA or something, not a game studio XD The Internet can figure out almost any mystery and its truth in about a year or 2.

Maybe the Auger of Dunlain wanted to merge with the Eye of Magnus, explaining him leaving after these events. Perhaps the Eye is also tied to the availability of magic on Tamriel, as well, and the Order wanted him to merge with it to make magic all the more powerful.

Well jokes on them, my the moment my character catches the wind of her being manipulated heads will start rolling and boy oh boy do I like to see them try fighting Alteration/Restoration/Conjuration Dragonborn master armed with The Stuff of Magnus and plethora of daedric artifacts What I meaning is that trying to control Dragonborn who might very well be canonically the most powerful mortal that currently walks on Tamriel very, veeeeery bad idea. Then again, Elder Scrolls lore full of people looking at VERY BAD NO GOOD DON DO IT idea and go like "I am a genius, what could go wrong?"
@lodziklocPL2 жыл бұрын
@@exploertm8738 it is implied on several occassions (like when asking Neloth to teach you enchanting) that the skill level 100 cap isn't the maximum that can be reached, but simply is for you as the player - Neloth implies that he is skilled beyond the 100 level cap. It makes sense, given how in Morrowind you could go above 100. So... don't assume just because all of your skills are at 100 that you are indestructible and superior to everyone. There are skills which are obviously there in the lore that are inaccessible in the games themselves.

He is the classic "one punch man" story I don't know the exact lore but through his words and the words of npcs such as guards the conclusion is that he has extreme wanderlust, he wanted to do everything when he meets the Dragonborn perhaps he seeks a challenge or just someone who can finally defeat him

Yeah well,... because that would be touching on the unholy source of not only magick itself but also - and much more! - on the source of the school of Winterhold. Immortality, becoming a god or god-like and power through (forbidden) knowledge: haven't we all heard about this before?! Magick, its providers and users are what causes ALL the devastation in this fantasy world. And that fact is rather uncomfortable for most fans of the franchise. I guess that's why the matter of the human sacrifice and the destruction of a city is little more than a side note in this video.

This video is a masterpiece deserving of an award. Of all the factions in Skyrim, I like the College of Winterhold most, though I'm likely in the minority. Having only played Skyrim for 2 years, I was ignorant of the prior games. What little I did learn helped shape the backstory of one character I created and it also lead me to the belief that souls were needed to ascend in power. I believe Tolfdir knew the Augur because I consider Colette, who is younger, more honest. It's also interesting how she speaks of the Augur when you do the Restoration Ritual. Fabulous work. I look forward to seeing other videos on this channel even if I'm years behind everyone else. Side note: You can partially skip the dialog of Meridia and Sheogorath.
