Cresco ZK-LTK Landing, loading and takeoff. Aerial Topdressing.

Ravensdown Aerowork Cresco ZK-LTK working 21km west of Hawarden, North Canterbury, New Zealand. 9th September 2018
With the use of technology ie GPS, aerial topdressing/crop dusting is far more precise on placement. Exclusions are created so that fertiliser is kept away from environmentally sensitive areas. The aircraft has a boundary file created that the onboard GPS unit automatically shuts off/turns on the flow of fertiliser at a specific rate per hectare depending if its in the block or outside. This rate is generally determined by soil testing so that the right fertliser is applied at the right rate to the right areas.

I grew up on sheep and beef country in lower Northland, NZ, near the Kaipara harbour. One of the worlds largest harbours, not to many people around it. Lots of airstrips like this. Memories of duck shooting an airstrip dam in the rain, soaking wet. Us kids on the back of uncles old 2wd ute. Flat out up the slopped airstrip, turnaround them 100m doughnuts all the way down the airstrip. Big drop off one side. Similar to this strip. Happy times. We all learnt how to drive pretty good to in those conditions.

We head your way every chance we can get and my young fella is the youngest person to do Tongariro Crossing - he was 4 and a bit, so we have a bit of Aussie skin in the game! :-) My wife is considering a transfer to Auckland for a year or two so our family can enjoy your beautiful country and hospitality. Many a hike we will do - I might even look into renewing my pilot's licence and enjoy it all from above... ANZAC all day indeed!

Notice after takeoff he kept the nose of aircraft down generating more airspeed which enabled nice climb out. Also a fast landing ( maybe tailwind) because of slope and without the need to reverse prop much nice energy / momentum. These guys because they're continuously taking off / landing turn this into an artform. Full hand flying with no automation/computers at its best.

That bucket on the back of the truck scoops up the material from a bin on the airstrip (not shown). The truck's hydraulics have scales on them so that the loader driver can load the correct weight into the plane. The truck also has a fuel tank on it to resupply the plane during the course of the day. During high season, the planes takeoff at dawn and will continue to just before dusk. Since many of these jobs are remote, if the job lasts more than one day, the loader driver will jump in the plane at the end of the day and go home with the pilot, leaving the loader truck on site. If the productivity is high, there can be a fleet of trucks and trailers supplying the bin with more material due to the long turnaround time to move the product from the quarry/store to the airstrip. A short turnaround time can be as low as one minute (takeoff, spread, land) so it can be quite easy to get through the material quickly. In New Zealand for a time, there was also application using Douglas Dakota / DC3s. These typically loaded at an aerodrome with fixed infrastructure, and would have a longer ferry time to the spread site.
