Usually content gets cut for a reason, but I think this is a case where we genuinely missed out on something great due to time constraints.

Pretty neat that those serpent soldiers seem to be the prototype of what would eventually become the Man Serpents of Dark Souls 1 and 3.

@ Yup. The Flexile Sentry is their take on the two headed serpents. The Suspicious Shadows sounds are the same as the serpent soldiers from DS1 which would mean their helmets are actually shaped like their head and not just for decoration. The Shadows also appear in the Sentry boss fight in ng+ which straightens their connections even more.

In another video I saw the scale of the Shadow Bird. Up until then I thought it was small like the Double Hawk, but it is actually on par with the size of the Storm Beasts. So I think they were originally what was flying around chucking spears in Shrine of Storms, another bit of the Shadowmen’s magic.
@KickieB5 сағат бұрын
i wonder if some of the beastmen (owl, bear,wolf, hyena) were intended for the shrine of storms at some point in their designing, as their garb is very similar to what the old hero wears. We would see a revisit of this "beast folk worshipping the elements" theme in Farum Azula (Elden Ring), with another storm themed area featuring Wolfmen who are now skeletons, which i guess links back to demon's souls in a way...

Between the Planarian and the Yeti I think we see some of these designs live on in Elden Ring. The design of the Fire Giants having a face in their stomachs are an obvious connection to Miyazaki's desire for a larger enemy with a mouth in the stomach (the Yeti's also remind me of the Lost Children of Bloodborne.) The Planarians look to be predecessors to the Silver Tears. Their smooth silver faces and ability to transform into something else looks to be something Miyazaki has wanted to introduce into his games for a long time coming. Great work!

Cut content always seems interesting to me because the fascination comes primarily from what could have been. Like imagine an alternative timeline where they put the area in the game. What if it was unfinished and rushed? Would people hate it? Instead of the fascination of what could have been, could it instead be the most hated area? Imagine if Blight Town was cut and people would have looked into the files and speculated about the mysterious poison area we never got...

Such a shame this game got the original Soul Reaver treatment. So much cut content that appeared near completion, all because of time constraints. They both even lived on to get the remaster treatment, still not getting ANY of said cut content into the game (SR pseudo "got it" in the form of viewable content from the main menu, but I don't count that, as it exists in no properly playable format in a playthrough.)

So like where did you confirm these were supposed to be in the northern limit? Is there data for them to appear there? I mean I don't know where else they would be, but given the aristochrats appearing in the unfinished versions of the level, what was supposed to be in this level is hard to say. So I'm just wondering like how did you confirm it?
@CrestfallenYT4 сағат бұрын
Honestly I never considered them not to be until now. The wiki says that the Snake Soldier has data on 6-3, and the Yeti that is confirmed to be at 6-1 is with the Bear Warrior in the intro cutscene. The 6th archstone itself also has a man/creature wearing tribal clothes which they all are wearing. So It's not really confirmed, sorry

I feel like we did end up seeing most of these ideas reused later on in some form or another. Wolfmen and wolves are everywhere in fromsoft games, and bears were a massive presence in Elden Ring. Both of the ideas kinda feel like they could still have made it in with Dark Souls 2 animal people, and probably lowkey did with the Lions. The planary humanoid things kinda feel like Humanity Sprites and a few other concepts too. But I'm actually kinda sad we never got the Owl mage (We would get the Crow People and ravens and all, but I like owls) and the Hyena (Connections with Patches, maybe? Could be fun). The Shadow Bird is also awesome and very different from everything else..

Serpent mobs are almost iconic part of FROM games... surprised they skipped them in DeS If they did 6th stone and put it in the final game then it would make stronger connection with older FROM games like Shadow Tower where there was larger variety of enemies than Souls. edit - heard that there's a mod/project that plans to restore 6th stone, wonder how it's going?

Only two enemies are present in the Northern Limit, the Yeti, and the Planarians. There is no evidence supporting that the beast warriors were meant to be in the northern limit at all. I do not know why you would include them as if they were part of the northern limit, while also having another section for enemies from unknown areas.
@CrestfallenYT4 сағат бұрын
I've never considered them not being part of the 6th archstone, or have seen people thinking that they're not, and since the Bear Warrior and Yeti are together in the intro I thought it was fair to assume that they're all from the same place. The Serpent Soldiers have data on the 6th archstone (according to wikidot) and it's pretty clear to me that these human-animals were all supposed to be from the same area. Also the 6th archstone itself has a man/creature wearing tribal clothes, which they all are wearing.
@ArianeC71504 сағат бұрын
@@CrestfallenYT Serpent soldiers are in all early developer maps, hence why there are in m07_02 (which is the map earliest in development). Concept art cannot always be used as evidence for where an enemy was meant to be, the flamelurker was also in that concept art, and yet you did not list them as part of the northern limit. While yes, the beast warriors are closely related and were probably meant to be in the same area, there's no evidence in the game files themselves to have placed them into the northern limit. As I already stated, the only enemies we know for sure were meant to be in the northern limit are the planarians and the yetis, the rest is all speculation, and should not be stated as fact.
