You always get the one SNCO who likes to remind his/her juniors of their places. It's called the unit asshole, they do it because a warrant officer/ seargant major likes order and efficiency. They are the person the platoon commander comes down on if there is any disorder. Their office door is also the first door you'll walk through if you've been caught misbehaving.

@@Alan_One1 What shoulder the cord is on is a moot point as it is ONLY supposed to be worn when qualified as an Infantry MOS, and ASSIGNED to an Infantry unit. A radio station is not an Infantry unit. The SGM shouldn't have one on period.

The craziest part of this rant is that this guy is a draftee radio personality. He's kept far away from anything important and his only job is to keep morale up, which he does far beyond expectations. This NCO barely ever has to see him if he doesn't want to, but seemingly can't stand the fact that this draftee isn't acting like a professional soldier. Hell, he should be bragging to his superiors about how he has this guy doing a great job and is improving morale throughout the theater. What's even worse is I've seen that NCOs like this really exist. I swear, they're the death of professional military careers. Like walking cancer.

Very few commanders or bosses like "wild cards" no matter how good they are at their job mainly because they know they have little control over them, thing is, you can be the the best there is for years but if you are not following the rules you only need to fuck up once and it can cause serious issues. Most would prefer you to be less good but more predictable to limit collateral damage if it ever goes wrong, as long as you are getting the job done well enough, excelling at the risk of critical failure is not worth it in their eyes.

SpartanSniper3 The career Senior NCO was Army. He had at least a good 20 years in or more and was used to having to be uptight and working in a sterile environment. Possibly served in WW2 in a war zone. Cronauer, on the other hand was a hippie in uniform who probably joined the Air Force to avoid being drafted. I never heard of anyone being drafted into the Air Force.

What is interesting is the before and after Vietnam aspects of our entertainment operation. Prior to Nam we had "Combat", "Airpower" narrated by Walter Cronkite, "The Gallant Men", "Hogan's Heroes", and endless reruns of "Victory at Sea". After Nam, we had "Mash", "Coming Home", "Southern Comfort", "Good Morning Vietnam", and "Hearts and Minds". Just a heads up for when the entertainment operations start getting our young men primed for the next one.

@ Wrong dumbass. The buttons on right side of shirt come under flap on left. Ribbons are where they belong on left breast, although all out of line and ate up. Jump wings and qualification badge are in correct place. Unit crests over right breast where they belong, but all ate up and out of line also. Name tag is where it belongs. The blue cord.... IS... on the wrong shoulder.

Tough and disciplined will hold you accountable for your actions, but still help you with a problem. This guy walked in and told the new guy "You shut your fuckin' hole!" within two minutes of meeting him. Why would anyone go to that Sgt. Major for help with anything? To say nothing of the fact that later on in the movie he deliberately sent Cronauer, unarmed, into an area known to be held by the enemy. This man sent one of his troops out to be deliberately captured or killed. He is a HORRIBLE NCO.

Slight adjustment....The Air Force does not and never has accepted draftees. The only way into the Air Force ever has been as a volunteer. If you don't want to be in that blue suit, then the Air Force doesn't want you in it either. It usually works out pretty well for both parties that way.

Why the hell is an Infantry Sergeant Major running a radio station? His job is to yell at people for trying to cut across the grass. There are probably rocks outside battalion headquarters that haven't been painted white because of this man's dallying. And I bet there are small twigs and leaves in the gravel surrounding those rocks. This is what happens when you wear your blue honor cord on the wrong shoulder.

Infantry NCOs are often put behind the lines if recovering from an injury; it could seem like a minor injury to a civilian. For example; a sprained ankle, a friction burn, blister, athletes foot. All of these injuries could hinder an infantry soldier, become infected or in the case of athletes foot, infect the rest of the platoon.

Some units within the armed forces refer to a sergeant major, warrant officer or master aircrewman as "Sir/ma'am, Mr or Miss" then their surname. Some prefer to be addressed in this manner,others find being called "Sir/Ma'am an insult; as we saw in this scene. To be safe, unless they say otherwise address a warrant officer or sergeant major by their rank.

Here is a definition of irony, my best friend from high school is named Dickerson! He made to so gunnery Sgt. (before going to OCS). He has always laughed at this movie because if the the top had called in the sgt's mafia they would have taken Cronauer out in the bushes and would have NEVER HAVE FOUND THE BODY!!!

They got it right about NCOs you never call them “sir”. Sir is for COs who got their rank through other means. NCOs gotta slog through the lower ranks. The army tries to break the individual down but at the same time pit the individual against the group. Officers vs their units, units vs each other, you against whoever is above you. It’s not always like that but to some it can end up that way.

"Sir" is a term of address for ANY commissioned officer (most of which are much lower rank than the CO)
