You always get the one SNCO who likes to remind his/her juniors of their places. It's called the unit asshole, they do it because a warrant officer/ seargant major likes order and efficiency. They are the person the platoon commander comes down on if there is any disorder. Their office door is also the first door you'll walk through if you've been caught misbehaving.

What is interesting is the before and after Vietnam aspects of our entertainment operation. Prior to Nam we had "Combat", "Airpower" narrated by Walter Cronkite, "The Gallant Men", "Hogan's Heroes", and endless reruns of "Victory at Sea". After Nam, we had "Mash", "Coming Home", "Southern Comfort", "Good Morning Vietnam", and "Hearts and Minds". Just a heads up for when the entertainment operations start getting our young men primed for the next one.

The craziest part of this rant is that this guy is a draftee radio personality. He's kept far away from anything important and his only job is to keep morale up, which he does far beyond expectations. This NCO barely ever has to see him if he doesn't want to, but seemingly can't stand the fact that this draftee isn't acting like a professional soldier. Hell, he should be bragging to his superiors about how he has this guy doing a great job and is improving morale throughout the theater. What's even worse is I've seen that NCOs like this really exist. I swear, they're the death of professional military careers. Like walking cancer.

Very few commanders or bosses like "wild cards" no matter how good they are at their job mainly because they know they have little control over them, thing is, you can be the the best there is for years but if you are not following the rules you only need to fuck up once and it can cause serious issues. Most would prefer you to be less good but more predictable to limit collateral damage if it ever goes wrong, as long as you are getting the job done well enough, excelling at the risk of critical failure is not worth it in their eyes.

"I'm transferrin' you to Guam, Dick." "Guam! There's nothing happening on Guam, sir!" "I always thought you were a little crazy, Dick. But you're just mean."

People please. Can't you see that the Sergeant is trying his best not to break character? I'm guessing they had to do several takes because you know RW is going to have everyone on the floor from laughing so hard. I'm guessing at least 5 or more takes in every scene. Other than Richard Pryor, these 2 had a gift, to be able to take any situation, and make people laugh.

@Donald Donald You sound like a dependasaurus demanding special treatment from the MPs because they married some officer. If you want to get offended for your father how about you go serve an enlistment yourself first. If your father raised you to immediately go tell someone "FY" when they said something you don't like then I shutter to think of what kind of a leader he really is and how he treats the poor souls under his command.

They got it right about NCOs you never call them “sir”. Sir is for COs who got their rank through other means. NCOs gotta slog through the lower ranks. The army tries to break the individual down but at the same time pit the individual against the group. Officers vs their units, units vs each other, you against whoever is above you. It’s not always like that but to some it can end up that way.

Here is a definition of irony, my best friend from high school is named Dickerson! He made to so gunnery Sgt. (before going to OCS). He has always laughed at this movie because if the the top had called in the sgt's mafia they would have taken Cronauer out in the bushes and would have NEVER HAVE FOUND THE BODY!!!
