we throw around the word hero so much that it lost its meaning 20 years ago when everyone who did something is all of a sudden a hero. I might have to look up that word again because the meaning has to be changed. I am sure the coast guard do these types of rescue daily from their chopper . I guess they are heros also! There's a semi-famous picture of basically the same thing on the I-5 (or it may have been Hwy 99) in the 1950s or 60s. BOTH that driver and this one are fortunate that the 5th wheel didn't release.

"Good morning!" says the firefighter to his wife. Kisses her and picks up his travel mug of coffee for the usual trip to the firehouse. Nex' thing Ya know he's dangling from a safety line, 400 feet above freezing water, to save a stranger. I was a cop but was always amazed by firefighters... they'd be doing something unbelievable like this while I jus' stayed clean n' said, "Stay back folks, let the firemen do their job." Bless all of these special guys!

They need to slow the speed limit on that bridge. That truck went through steel to go over the pedestrian walkway. A pedestrian could have been killed. Slow it down to 20 mph. This cannot happen again.

And as usual, a news reporting show that doesn't answer the big question, of HOW did it happen, is it simply because it was a woman truck driver, because being a retired truck driver that put over a million miles on trucks all over America, I can't even begin to understand HOW this truck got in that position, it had to be some enormous, ridiculous, driver error that caused this accident 😠👎😠👎

As a retired semi driver that clocked over a million miles driving cross country, & over 40 yrs drive time, I can only tell you this, when you're a professional driver, especially in a semi, your trained over and over again on, the importance of leaving plenty of room between you and vehicles ahead of you, to be looking far down the road and in your side mirrors every 5 seconds, to read problems all around you, so IF SHE WAS DOING ALL THAT, there's no way she wouldn't have had time to STOP, WITHOUT being involved in any accident, This either was INATTENTIVE DRIVING or something that I guarantee you, involves DRIVER ERROR, no way a semi winds up hanging over the side of a bridge like that if somebody is following all the rules that you're taught as a professional semi driver...

I'm curious why the fire department that "has trained for this a hundred times" forgot to secure the truck to the bridge before putting one of their people on rope and attempting a rescue. I'm also curious why, once the rescuer and victim were on rope they extended the aerial so far over the water before bringing them back in.

@@fractussI’m not sure where your little hissy fit is coming from, but to answer your questions… no, I wasn’t there, no, I don’t think they properly assessed the stability of the truck because if they had they would have secured it to the other side of the bridge. If you take a look at what’s holding the truck in place you’ll see it’s the left top rear portion of the trailer. Have you seen what these trailers are made of? It’s a fiberglass skin over an aluminum skeleton. Have you ever seen one after it hits an overpass? It’s not made to support an axial load in any direction, especially from the roof straight downward. In other words, that truck was not in a secure position and should have been secured to the bridge structure across the roadway perpendicular to the roadway with at least two 20k lb straps. This should have been done before anyone went anywhere near it and the fact that it wasn’t is sloppy, careless, and dangerous. It was also careless to use a tractor drawn aerial device in which all of the stabilization was placed on the left side tormentor, and to then extend the ladder much further than it had to be with two souls on rope. Once the driver was secured it should have been raised and retracted but for some reason they chose to extend the ladder out over the water nearing the max tip load. You can see the flex as they do it, and there is no reason for it. After 37 years in the business I absolutely know what training is for, how to give it, and how to make it effective. I watched several of these videos several times and I can find no excuse for these actions. If this was you or one of your family members involved and that’s why you’re having such an emotional reaction then I suggest you hug them tight because you’re lucky they didn’t get killed.
