Louisville firefighter recalls harrowing rescue of driver from bridge

Strapped to a rope anchored by a ladder truck, Bryce Carden was lowered over the bridge some 100 feet over the Ohio to save a driver trapped inside the semi.

As an Instructor in Cliff Rescue, (now known as High Angle Rescue) for 20 Years I can fully appreciate the technical difficulties of this Rescue and fully commend all involved.

I don't care how much they train, plan and prepare for these types of rescue, on the day it has to be about teamwork and patience. In that these officers, every one of them, excelled. Heroic doesn't even come close to covering it. What a magnificent team and modest with it. I'll bet they hoped and thought they'd never have to face that challenge in a real world incident, but when they did they came good. I hope the lady and the other drivers make a full recovery in time.

What’s noteworthy is that ALL of the TEAM are trained equally, anyone of these FF’s could have been sent in for the rescue, but all of the TEAM had his back and that alone took the stress level near or below a 50/50 chance the rig didn’t slip. The video of the retrieval showed just how solidly wedged both Tractor and Trailer were. Trailers as this one can support or are Rated for 80,000 pounds of cargo and in this position any amount inside could have slid forward of course only the Driver knew what she was hauling. Thank GOD she wasn’t privately hauling Livestock like Horses!
