this is a spot on review. I test road both, the 500 and the crf450L. The 450 felt better on road and had a comfort to it. I felt like I can explore longer with the 450 but the 500 wanted to be ridden hard. Definitely a more aggressive offroadbike. This is the review we need, the reliability, the reported miles, oil change intervals. good job! glad you did the research on what people were getting on their engines

I've owned both bikes. Both even at the same time. The 500 is what I kept while giving the honda the boot. The 500 has the best filtration system for the oil that I've ever seen. Everything on it is so well designed and thought out, I can't imagine reliability being a problem. The honda is a great bike but from the factory it needs help. It's heavier, runs so lean that its almost unenjoyable to ride, its a way bigger bike. The 500 (like any other bike on the market) also runs lean... HOWEVER it doesn't flameout, the power delivery is smooth, the transmission is unbelievably smooth and maintenance is a piece of cake with how well thought out the design of the bike is. The 500 gives off a sort of encouragement to give it more juice and flickability in the tight stuff... its hard to explain. Maybe its weight and size has something to do with it but it has a very mellow characteristics to it just off idle, but once mid range hits everything just flows. The plush WP suspension, the smooth power delivery, the feedback from the chasis. Its all fantastic and gives off confidence. On the road the KTM also has a huge advantage. And that would be its overdrive 6th gear. You can basically throw any gear ratio at this bike and freeway riding wouldn't be an issue. 1-5 is close ratio where 6th is the ultimate highway cruiser. I run 13-50 and anything under 52MPH in 6th would lug the hell out of the engine. The Honda definitely got buzzy on the freeway. It felt like it was being rang out anything past 60, whereas the KTM was just getting comfortable. The disadvantage to the orange and white bikes? The headlight! Why KTM wouldn't include LEDs in their street or even dirt package is beyond me. This is an expensive bike. And I'm nitpicking but the headlight is basically useless. It offers no light at all in a darkened environment. It's an easy fix but I would definitely like to see LEDs come standard .

This information is very informative and helpful. I don’t hear from many people who owned both. I currently own a KTM 525 and I hate the carburetor since it’s always giving me trouble; even after countless troubleshooting. I’ll have a professional look at it next week. Right now the bike is running 14F/48R and 60 mph cruising is harsh! The engine feels like it’s reaching the limits. The Honda was on my mind because my current KTM has slightly upset me and it’s always good to try a new brand. But I can’t stop hearing good things about the KTM 500. The choice is pretty difficult but you get a much better package from the factory with the exc. People always say that Honda has better reliability but I don’t think this is true anymore. The 500 has been taken all across the world without any issues! Some folks report 15,000 miles until a valve inspection. I believe both are good choices but I always find myself going to that KTM. I don’t know where my future decisions will take me, but hopefully somewhere adventurous.

I owned both too. My analysis: KTM engine vibrated too much, Honda vibrated more. KTM fueling was a little fluffy, Honda's was worse and made way worse by too light of a flywheel. KTM seat was uncomfortable, Honda's was criminal. KTM suspension was sweet, Honda's had more fork stiction than any motorcycle I have ever seen. KTM's standard suspension settings were great even as delivered, Honda's were too stiff even when loosened up. Honda was a PITA to lube chain due to plastic thing on rear sprocket. Honda's engine cover that had to be removed to change oil was annoying. Plastics and decals were poor quality on KTM, Honda's were pretty good. KTM key/steering head lock were a joke. I got rid of both, but if I did it again, between those two I would go with the EXCF.

I’m curious how long you kept the bikes/how many miles you put on them? I absolutely hated my 450 L when I first bought it brand new. Forks were harsh, fueling was not good and the brakes sucked. It felt buzzy but no worse than my 650 L. After about 1500 miles I could not have asked for a sweeter motorcycle. The bike was literally too tight from new. Once it breaks in the suspension action is very smooth/predictable. When knew, it deflected off of everything and drove me insane. I ended up with a vortex on mine and that took care of the low speed/tip in throttle problems. The brakes after they finally bed in we’re also top-notch. I think most of us don’t give ourselves enough time to acclimate to the bike or enough time to let them break in before judging the product and/or making mods. I also have a 2016 500 EXC. Stock versus stock, the KTM is a more usable “better” bike. Equally set up with pipe/ECU/gearing changes, I think the Honda might be the better machine as a true dual purpose bike. The KTM does have slightly better tight course turn in but the Honda chassis is rock solid at speed. This KTM is my first PDS bike though too. It definitely has a different feel to it that you have to get used to. I’m thinking about trying a 450X next, I think it might be the sweet spot bike for how/what I ride.

Me and my son has 2024 ktm 500excf. We absolutely love the bikes. I’ve been riding a KTM EXCF for years now. They are super reliable and the new model changes was a great move for KTM. LED headlight was one of them. The new frame and forks are a great upgrade for 2024. Love riding it in the mountains of West Virginia. Just 14 miles from the famous Blackwater 100 race.

Finally a proper review the Honda is a actual dual sport I own a 450L and a KTM 250 and the Honda on the road is by far the better bike if your riding to the trails or desert the Honda would be the better choice the more weight on the road the better keeps you more stable but if you tow your bike to the bush all the time KTM you be the pick or the husky 501 imo but no doubt the Honda will keep up just needs a vortex ecu and mud tiers and it keeps up no worries I recon the Honda is the better bike for all around riding Thankyou for the awesome review!

Good video. I own the 450L, love the bike! I really am just a motorcycle aficionado, so brand doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I see alot of weak riding videos of the 450L, which drives me crazy. The bike is capable of soooooo much more! I like to share my opinion on this topic because I think the 450L has received an unfair response due to specs, and people going off just those without riding the bike. The reality is Honda did a great job with this bike, but there are alot of Honda haters out there, constantly bashing anything Honda makes. I was literally in the same predicament as you with these two bikes. Don't get me wrong, a few mods need to be done to the Honda, but when made I can guarantee it will hang with the KTM.

Thanks for the video, I'm a KTM 500 guy with a plate, It's perfect for me in my favorite setting, the T1 Tour of Idaho. I ride the 1300 miles, change oil, and tires and ride the trail in reverse, my last KTM 530 went 26,000 miles, one piston change at 12K for piece of mind, and at 26K miles, sold running great, no issues(but was not teenage owned, lol) I'm looking at CRf450L info(thanks for your input!) I hope it has serious Honda Longevity, to me it's a DRZ400E(plated)Replacement, 6 gears, 450, much better suspension, would love to see a side cover to increase oil capacity, but I like what I see!! It's heavier than the 500(50 lbs with fuel maybe) but I love the subframe, and vibe dampening swing arm!!! The weight isn't an issue with me, as it will see over half street miles vs dirt!! Slightly used ones are so rare, but I'm looking. Would love to see larger tanks, the KTM 690 is a low fuel bike too unless your throw $$ at it. I'm sure the 450L could rock the T1 easy too.

If you have either the ktm or the honda, your a winner. Currently, both. Bikes need to be uncorked 🤣 The honda is heavier, but is sporting some armor. I've been a ktm 510cc guy for 16 years(520, 525, 530, 500), love the torque. Single track is so easy, but I'm moving to a 350exc for mpg, T1 tour of Idaho, some gas stops are 250 miles apart. 65mpg trail riding helps, lol. Slab, either of these doing 400 miles a day, makes my body ache just thinking about it, but I'd ride either of these on the TaT, although a twin would be better for me 😁.

I have owned both, I currently still have the 500 EXC. Both are super reliable, multiple KTM 500's have gone around the globe, no 450L/RL's have that claim, yet. OCI's can be stretched to the same interval, better aftermarket for the orange bike. Where the hairs get split is where the strengths lie for these bikes. The Honda has a smoother motor and that combined with its extra weight make for a better on road bike. The KTM has better power, especially when uncorked, but it is a buzzier motor. The KTM is lighter weight and is simply the better bike off-road. KTM costs more both before and after the purchase as well so keep that in mind. The Honda is great for high speed desert use and the KTM is the better slow speed technical weapon. Decide what you need from the bike and how you intend to use it and then pick one from there. You really can't go wrong either way as they are the two best 450/500 options on the market.

Hello , good honest video there mate ,, i have a crf450L that i use for single track riding here in Australia, i generally push tracks up mountains where there are no trails or roads, in standard from its a bit snappy for the real tight stuff but it will do it, a few simple mods help though its pretty easy to set it up for this kinda riding, best mods i recomend for this are a G2 throttle tamer, stealthy flywheel weight and change the rear sprocket from 51 to 53, changing the rear muffler also saves heaps of weight as it weighs 6.5kg!! not to mention all the other stuff you can pull off it even the mirrors are pretty heavy, yes it will never be as light as a 500exc but it can be made a lot closer, if your using the standard USA ECU you can do a DIY map switch for almost free (see my channel) it tricks it into thinking its in 6th gear all the time , this helps a lot in the gnarly riding cheers

what would be the actual maintenance schedule of a KTM500 for dualsporting vs racing if the manual even have those specs? and what is misleading? both are great bikes, both last a long time. I even mentioned some people went up to 30k miles without even checking valves even on the KTM500. I mean im not bashing any bikes lol...both are awesome bikes. only thing I noticed was just crf450L was more comfortable. and every1 changes their oil every 3 or 4 rides regardless of racing or not. I even change my DRZ400E oil every 4 or 5 rides.

I disagree the 500 is the better sm moto the crf450l is an alrounder , 500 will do anything the 450 can do but do it better

I sat on a crf450l for a few minutes at dealer. I don’t think I have ever sat on such a horrible seat and on a bike that’s supposed to be a dual sport. I’m sure Honda will maybe work this out in time. Surely there are aftermarket solutions at this point.

video is kind of old, but my gopro kept having issues and freezing so I did not much have riding footage. It was my buddies bike. I dont do much videos anymore, but both are really good bike. the crf450L feels more stable at speed and on the road and over smoother, but the ktm500 has a higher fun factor more powerful and I would say if you ride the gnar a lot more, esp tight single track thats rocky and such at speed the ktm 500 is better. For me, the 450L is a better choice for me at this point of time since I dont really ride much gnar anymore. I do more exploring on mining roads and stuff.

the 450L is worse than an uncorked DRZ... the 500 exc f is way better than both. horsepower to weight ratio is unbeatable... no one doing these comparisons mentions horsepower these videos honestly seem like people trying to justify an emotional decision working backwards rather than making a genuine comparison. the better bike is the better bike. that's the comparison. which bike is better. not which bike is for you.

hate to break it to you, but i know many people with KTMs around colorado and I am yet to see one break down. i think people who say comments like this just follow the crowd that talk negatively about KTMs since they never owned one or cant afford one. there is one guy in our group who has a 2001 KTM and is yet to have a failure. as of now, my klx250 had issues, my drz400 had issue, my cb500x honda has an issue. my husky which is made by ktm, 0 issues
