Always a good day when a Master System gets some love on KZbin. Nice work spotting that wonky crystal, that really seemed like a “hang on a sec....” moment.

It was exactly that, just when I touch it and it moved. Probably should have looked their first since the rf shield was loose but got there in the end.

I had the software error problem on my Master System 1. Turns out it was a single broken trace leading to the cartridge slot. What didn’t help my troubleshooting was that I had a card game (I later found was faulty) to test with.

I thought they only called it the Master System in the US and Canada. Interestingly enough it is still sold in Brazil by Tectoy as a plug-and-play console which uses a single-chip implementation of the original hardware.

Is it still being sold, I thought it was now discontinued? I must try to get a Brazil master system, would be cool to own a new 8bit Sega console.

That heat sink free floating around the inside of the case couldn't of done the discrete components any good. Im not suprised there's some loose components on the board it's a wonder there wasn't more.

Never had a Master's System...had a Sega Genesis and years later bought a CDX which I still have...ought to take that out of mothballs and see if it still runs. I did get one of those portable clones from AtGames a few X-mas's ago which you can also plug into a TV but the controls aren't as good as an original.

Well if you still have your mega drive all you need is the converter to play master system games. It's backwards compatible afterall.

I had a MegaDrive, so not used to how the MasterSystem works, but I thought once you'd fixed the regulator, it simply wasn't doing anything as there was no game inserted! I didn't expect the mastersysten to have a sega title screen, AND instructions! That's super cool (And why didn't my MegaDrive have that too??)
@CRG3 жыл бұрын
There is also a built in snail maze game then the later console has full games built in. I don't know why they didn't include something on the mega drive, maybe by then things had just moved on and they seen no reason for it.

A great machine ruined by the monopoly that Nintendo got away with.....such a shame..it was superior technically.

My Nephew had a Mk1 --- I knew it took cards but never seen any in the wild. I think the built in game was 'Alex Kidd in Miracle World' ?
@CRG3 жыл бұрын
This one is meant to have a simple snail maze built into it although I'm not sure as I can't get it to come up. The later master systems had hang on built in then it was the SMS2 with Alex Kidd and finally Sonic. I'm not sure if the Master System 1 ever shipped with Alex Kidd. As far as I know you can burn a rom to change the built in game. That might be worth looking at. The cards come up from time to time on ebay, most the games got ported to cartridge anyway but it would just be nice to have even one.
@hadessuk3 жыл бұрын
There’s loads of different versions of the SMS1, depending on the territory and bundle (Safari Hunt and Hang-On for the bundles with the phaser for example),. And you didn’t dream the SMS1 with Alex Kidd in Miracle World, that’s the bundle I had as a kid.
@SimonQuigley3 жыл бұрын

That "A-ha" moment when discovering the cause of a failure is always awesome. I've never actually played a game on a Master system, as I was already in High school when they came out and cars and girls were far more interesting to me by that time than video games. Most of my buddies that would admit to still playing video games on console were doing so on the NES. Perhaps I'll source one and see what I missed...
@CRG3 жыл бұрын
Yep that was a real "A-ha" moment when I noticed the damaged crystal. The master system is always overshadowed by the NES but it's a great machine with a good games library. If you can find one I'd recommend it or even just a mega drive with the converter, its backwards compatible to the master system.

Xtals are indeed on their way since yesterday. If you see weird stuff on the tracking, don't panic, they weren't the usual mail guys and probably their first day because they collected the parcel, came back 5 minutes later to deliver it to me ^-^ I had to explain the guy what "return address" means ahahaha, I'm not making that up. Hopefully, he did what he said he would do and asked Royal Mail to cancel the fact that it's probably already showing as delivered.
