The trick with this instrument it to get a motion where the balls clearly strike the tube at different times in rapid succession. That's where you get the "scraping" or rippling sound like the chirp of a cricket. You can also get a similar sound with one of those mini güiro frogs, but when you get it right I think this one does sound more like crickets, especially in a mix.

I've been curious about what artists used, if they used this cricket, or what you said about, the mini güiros. (That was what I originally thought before I found out about this instrument.) Check these songs out. (I'm pretty sure you've all heard the first one before.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaqZp6l_eriDn68 kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXmbqp-OpJ2lrbs

I believe that as you initiate the downstroke you'd get "cric-" sound, but if you then give it an upstroke, you'd get the "-ket", sound that's just one solid sound making the instrument sound just like a "cric - ket" cricket sound. It has to be a down-up motion yet holding it in a way so that the ball bearings stay or end with just a one-note "ket" sound as you hold it up. "down cric - up - ket" sound. Try it!

Are you talking about it sounding like claves? Unless I'm listening to something with a lot of latin influences, that's what I make it sound like. I don't know if artists use this, claves, or high pitched wood blocks, but you sometimes hear the sound in songs that aren't latin influenced. (usually in mellow songs)

I like that it's wielded like an axe. It should be called the "cricket axe".

I was always curious about what artists used to create that sound. (All Night Long by Lionel Richie) But after some research, I found out about this, and got one. The one I got is from LP, (Latin Percussion) and it only has three balls instead of four. It actually sounds better though, imo. 1:03 That's how I usually play with it. And, unless I'm listening to something with a lot of Latin influences, I usually hold the body of it, (I don't really know what you call it.) and shake it gently, so you only hear one click, like claves.

@@WORLDDRUMCLUB I don't know if they use this kind of percussion, but the technique I'm talking about is something you hear in pop/rock music, not just latin music.

i'm trying to figure out what's the percussion instrument on Grateful Dead's "operator"- it sounds like a ratchet with controlled twists but it has a zippy ascending/descending aspect. It's very common in country music and if you listen to "operator" it's immediately apparent- I keep trying to google it but I'm coming up empty.
