@thedeadquaker4 жыл бұрын
What do you mean deserved better?
@Shivian1244 жыл бұрын
Nah he got a LOT of chances. How can you say he was underrated? When he was on, he was world class - terrifying. When he was cold, he left you a bowler short. Would go for over 4 an over, would give LOADS of tripe. Ended many innings giving huge momentum to the opposition team. His rhythm and confidence was EVERYTHING. When he is clearly cold and needs a boost to confidence, what is the right solution? Do you keep feeding him to international batting or do you ask him to go back to state and get confidence and rhythm back? Like Watto and all his injuries, I argue that trying to find your feet when you are floundering at International level probably isn't the right call. It left Australia a player short in so many games on the punt that he somehow can pull himself into rhythm in the fire of world class batting? Just doesn't make sense to me.

This is an interesting Test in that when you think of Mitchell Johnson destroying batting line-ups you think of the 2013/4 Ashes and the tactics he employed there: short, fast, getting batsmen caught behind fending off deliveries. Here he got his wickets through bowling full and swinging the ball: many lbws and bowled. Still at great pace though.
@sarthakbhalerao10454 жыл бұрын
I still feel his career was short lived, don't know why, but feels like he retired too early
@grantss13 жыл бұрын
He did retire too early, and Australian pitches were to blame, I reckon. After he destroyed England in the 2013/4 Ashes Australian pitches became roads, as Cricket Australia and Channel 9 wanted to maximise revenue through Tests lasting 5 days, rather than the 3-4 they lasted in that series. This and the allure of easy money playing IPL and whatever the last T20 competition was would have convinced him to quit Test (and international) cricket. Final straw was the 2015 Perth Test where NZ ran up 624 and Johnson got 1/157 off 28 overs. He retired immediately after that Test.

Always interesting rewatching Johnson- such an odd career in retrospect. With how, at the time, inconsistent he was (prior to his late career resurgence from '13 to '14), it always takes me aback when I realise that he has more test wickets than Lee. He might have been all over the place and misused as an out-and-out swing bowler by Ponting, but he definitely had impact.

That is some SERIOUS fast bowling! You can manage to handle pace but to handle pace and swing, pray to God. After every ball I’d shoot my eyes towards the big screen and his pace barely dropped below 80mph.
