Give Sobers the same about of test matches (166) as opposed to 93 and what to think his stats will be. Batting alone he was good in any position from 3 to 7. Quite flexible with positions as team needed, averaging 72 odd at #3, 63 at #4, 59 at #5, 53 at #6 and 67 at #7 in an entertaining fashion. The different types of bowling with the ball. Excellent fielder and captain. Kallis is a brilliant player and statistically in terms of overall runs, wickets and catches Kallis is on top but thats because he played 73 tests more.

Kallis was an amazing player. The incredible thing was that whilst he was playing, his achievements hardly being recognised much by the wider media/public. It seemed he lived under the shadow of the likes of Tendulkar, Lara when it came to recognition. Only now, when you see the stats does it really dawn on people just how great a player he was

It's more to do with his personality and how South Africa fared in major tournaments, they had great batsmen in Gary Kirsten, Smith, AB de Villiers, Amla, Gibbs at the same time as Kallis was playing, IMO he was the best out of all of them, but he was not the flag bearer, people looked up to other batsmen as well and the fact that South Africa always did poorly in major tournaments pushed his legacy behind players like Sachin who always did well in world cups, had the pressure of country like India and won games despite having an equally or perhaps better Indian batting lineup.

@@IBumpg only in tests .and there too with ball Kallis has better avg and strike rate than Sobers as well and Sobers didn't even play any odis but kalis played 166 tests 13,289 runs 292 wickets and 200 catches ??? Add to that 11,000 Plus odi runs ,131 catches ,273 wickets .

Greatest batsman in Test Cricket is Kumar Sangakkara... However when it comes to elegance and many other factors I'd pick Brian Lara.... Sachin was great to watch in 90s, but since he changed his technique in mid 00s he didn't have the same elegance, but still was very effective. As he had a longer career at the highest level I agree if someone call him the greatest batsman ever... But its always difficult to pick the best between Lara, Sangakkara, Kallis, Ponting, Viv and Sachin as they all can be considered the best in their own right... Kholi may join the group soon....

Lol. Sachin never changed his technique. It was all same ever. He was the greatest batsman of all times with no shortcomings and natural abilities. The fact that he was ready to face the deadly bowlers at a mere age of 16 when he debuted against Pakistan tells a lot. Punter, Sanga ,Devilliers , Lara were all probably playing neighbourhood cricket when they were 16.

Because these so called lists of these players were made to gain more clout. It doesn't have anything to do with cricket. Most of them adds Sachin just to bring validity to their lists. Why would anyone put Gayle on their top 5 list of batsman if not for clout?
