As a long suffering English cricket fan, I really do admire these two true legends of the game. If it wasn't McGrath metronomically turning Atherton round with a cross-batted nick to slip or Warne bamboozling batsmen with prodigious spin out of the rough, it was this great opening pair that would often extinguish any vague hope of victory, let alone respectability, that England had in Ashes tests during the 1990s and Noughties. It was a privilege to watch this phenomenal generation of cricketers play with such intensity, skill and consistency. They truly revolutionised modern day test match cricket and thoroughly deserve all the respect and plaudits they earned. Testament to how good Langer was is exemplified by how prematurely Michael Slater's test career came to an abrupt halt, and I'd credit Slater as setting the tone for the aggressive manner with which other Australian batsmen (like Ponting and Gilchrist) played from the mid/late 90's onwards. One blink and Slater would have Australia 50 for none (or none for 50) after 10 overs, both tainting the figures and destroying the careers of many an opening bowler. This style of play made it possible to psychologically lose a test or even series within the first session, the rest would amount to damage limitation. Taylor and Slater were a very fine opening pair, but the partnership Hayden and Langer forged was a real advancement which took the game, scoring rates particularly, to another level. I doff my cap to you fine sirs!

That team won matches before they ever entered the field through the sheer intimidation of the names playing for it. Out of 11, up to 8 were all time legends. It will be unlikely any other team can match its reputation. An opposition captain would have a tough time rallying his troops knowing this team has every aspect covered and no weaknesses. Great batting, incredible bowling and amazing fielding.

I remember talking to my grandad about 2005 and us both saying the Aussies will never get a team full of legends all come thru at the same time again. It happens once every 50 years maybe 100. It's like football equivalent to the class of 92 when Beckham scholars butt Phil Neville Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs came thru the youth system together. It only happens once in a generation if that. Some team that cricket team was a pleasure to watch even as a pom. In England we boo and jeer opponents Mock even maybe banter them. Only because really we fear them and inwardly respect them. It's probably the reason Steve Smith gets so much hate in england. The crowd will boo him to his face and unfortunately saying he's a brilliant batsman to each other. It's a respect thing but the end of the day when it's England Vs Australia especially in England we want to make it as uncomfortable as we can.
