Cricut Smart Label: Is This Material Worth It?

Hi Angie - thank you so much for this tutorial. You have just saved me a lot of money. I did not know that you could only write on the smart vinyl and also the mat requirements. I have a Maker and for Christmas received a Cricut Joy which I am using to create labels for my containers as I am reorganising my craft room. Vinyl is a whole new learning curve for me so once again thank you - I love your videos - Catherine

I use clear over the pen and label. Sharpies tend to stay better too.

Also, if you use Mod Podge spray, it will seal the label so that the pen does not come off and it will make it waterproof

Can you do a video on the special paper that you print on, then stick it on clay then wash it under the tap and the image stays on? Theres only reels on instagram and no youtube videos explaining it

Sometimes Cricut Design Space will tell you to move them when you go to cut. Otherwise, anything that is thick definitely move them as they will drag. Secondly, anything that they may marr or make a mark on needs to be moved. I actually move mine out of the way and often forget to move them back!

I wonder if with the black smart vinyl that it would be better to use a mat and then see how the opaque pen works, might be that the vinyl tends to lift as it is printing.

That could definitely be causing the issue but I also don't want to waste an inch off of the sides!

@@AngieHolden I think you could cut the length to 11" so you would have a piece 11"x12" (or cut to any length) and turn the material to put it on the mat, no wasted inch. You wouldn't be able to use it as a roll but it should work just like using any piece of material you cut to fit a project

Angie, what do you suggest using for address labels? I have been using the smart sticker paper cardstock on my Joy, but it is so thick.

I use printable vinyl but you can't do print then cut with a Joy.

Hi Angie. What if after Cricut is done writing, we would hit Pause for 1 to 2 minutes, b4 continuing on, to see if giving it a chance to dry would help with the smearing?? Would you give that a try & then let us know?? Thanks much from Glenda Kanoudi!!

It actually smeared as it was writing so I don't think that would work.

Since your so good at research can you please tell me which should I get, the Cricut mug press or the PYD heat press? which would do more and work on more materials including sublimation?

The PYD press is more expensive but it does have a wider range of options. It just depends on how often you will be using it and what you will be making.

Sure! If you bought the larger version just cut it down and put it on the mat.

Yue mentioned you went to Images to select the labels, some have layers. Can you explain a little more? I have the smart label material for my joy.

Click images in Cricut Design Space and search for "label" then pick one you like. You can change layers to pen layers like I did here or delete off layers if needed.

No you can only write with pens not print on it. They make a printable vinyl.

The idea of smart material is good.. just the practical side is a bit less!! Smaller pieces still have to be cut on a mat anyway and the backer is a nightmare ..has a mind of its own😂! I have a couple of small rolls for the Joy, which I use for sentiments, which I buy when they are on sale and I mean sale as in at least 50% off otherwise it’s way too expensive, otherwise I steer clear of anything Smart.

They actually improved the material after the Joy was released. So the new Smart Materials are better.

I feel like this is an ad for cricut. I HATE the smart label. It feels sticky to the touch and after a while the black cricut pen printing fades to a purplish color. I purchased printable adhesive paper off Amazon and used my inkjet printer to make pantry labels. Can’t say if it’s waterproof but the results are much more professional. Don’t waste your money on the cricut smart label.
