Thanks so much for this comparison! No one in my life has been able to tell me the differences, but you confirmed what I thought to be true and more! I have an Accuquilt which is perfect for me since I'm a sewist (not a paper/vinyl crafter, etc). I always wondered about the flexibility with the Cricut, but glad to hear your comments about the glitchiness and other aspects. Now I can share my knowledge with others. I love your honesty and how unapologetic you are for owning all the "gadgets." I got mine as a gift for Christmas and I love it. Congratulations, too, you got AccuQuilt's attention, that's kinda cool!

Thanks so much for commenting and watching I use both of my machines but lately I've been doing tons of custom shapes so I've been using the cricut more. I am about to do a pixel quilt next so it will be accuquilt for the win.

I too am a notion girl , but an older older one. I am anxious to get into quilting for my 6 grandchildren for starters. I just purchased an AccuQuilt manual cutter. I am at my daughters and away from home for another several weeks. I have made my purchases while away. My husband and I have had interesting conversations regarding my deliveries at home. I have the Maker and every machine Cricit has come out with. I started quilting recently and saw the Accuquilt. It’s intriguing but goodness is it expensive! I can’t bring myself to do it. The fact that I have to buy a die each and every time I need a new shape throws me off when the Maker can do it all and more without me needing to buy a die each and every time.

I completely understand. I love my cricut and use it more than my accuquilt but my accuquilt is much faster and easier for certain projects. That price tag hurts but I got mine on sales that they have all the time.

This is great information! I have just purchased the accuquilt and was always concerned about the waste but when I realised how much waste I had from rushing and cutting pieces wrong partly because cutting is definitely not my favourite thing, the waste is very minimal. I easily waste more from incorrect cutting and continually having to re-square my fabric!

Wow!!! Loved this video and your comparison. I learned alot and appreciate your comments. I have a Cricut Explorer and I've just started using it to cut fabric. I enjoy cutting HTV and apply them to shirts. So far so good with the fabric. Also, just learning about heat and bond. I'm working on a circle quilt and need a lot of cuts - and I got a specific template to use. I've got about 100 done and need about 300 more. I had to stop and cut about 15 minutes a day as it's hard on my hands. The curve is difficult to cut and I seem to have to go through it a few times. I see that Accuquilt has a die for these - and yes, it's expensive. I googled a comparison and up you came. I'm also looking at the Scan and Cut. You brought up the fact that you need to change out on the mat several times to get your cuts - this would be the same on the Cricut and SNC. The SNC has the ability to cut your own creations too, but since I've got the Cricut, I'm going to continue to use it. I'm going to look at your videos to learn more. I can create a design and scan it into my BabyLock Destiny II then bring it into Embrilliance and create an embroidery design and Stitch Artist to create an applique. So, maybe the Accuquilt is the best for me because I can cut through several pieces of fabric accurately. I think I'll get the cube and see how large of a die I can get. So I'm thinking that if I wanted to cut 30 hearts - and like you said I can cut my scrappy pieces, I think that I would choose to go to the Accuquilt. Thanks so much for this video and allowing me to organize my thoughts on how to do this. Also - I have an awesome African print jelly roll. Can't wait to find your quilt.

Thank you so much for this video! This is exactly what I was looking for. I love to craft and create art with all different kinds of media. I love sewing and have desperately wanted to create a quilt for an embarrassingly long time. The whole process feels intimidating. I have spent years (yikes, I know) collecting supplies that I feel like would make it easier on me. My least favorite thing to do when sewing is cutting out material. I always want to jump right into sewing. Also, I do NOT have a steady hand when it comes to cutting straight lines regardless of what tool I'm cutting with. I've always liked the idea of the Accuquilt and have kept it on my wishlist for awhile. However, since I'm sort of an all around crafter and have the same history with Cricut as you, I'm still leaning toward the Maker. I want something that is versatile and more easily customizable (done in design space rather than purchasing custom dies). Thanks again for helping my fickle self make a decision! I love your raw honesty so I've subscribed and am now looking forward to diving into your other videos!

I purchased my Scan-N-Cut at the Houston Quilt Festival. I purchased it because I'm planning to get into embroidery. The Brother Scan-N-Cut will talk to your Embroidery machine and cut fabric for your applique. I sold my Cricket. Hi! Great comparison. ❤️ I’m totally an Accuquilt girl because I don’t appliqué. The only thing I would add is that there are ways to spend less money. The electric cutter is the most expensive, but you can get a regular Go cutter for as little as $150 if you buy used. And I got all of my Studio dies at 50% or more off (60% on Black Friday.) And there are fb pages where you can buy previously owned Accuquilt products for a lot less. I run one.

I have the smallest manual Accuquilt and use it conventionally for quilts, plus more creatively to cut into my own painted fabric. Also use it for applque shapes, backing first with Bondaweb, again using own fabrics. I would say it is quite hard to turn the handle though, especially being left handed (handle rotates wrong way!). I manage, but if you had arthritis, for instance, would find it hard to use. Thanks, by the way, for being honest in describing yourself as a beginner. I am fed up with people who have sewn a few years, writing quilting books, and talking as if they are expects, when some of us have gained experience over a lifetime, have qualifications and have taught textiles, but still don't describe ourselves as expert!

I sew bags. Sling Bags, Tote Bags, etc. I design my own patterns. I need a machine that can use my design and cut out fabric based on my designs. I have several differently-shaped pattern pieces for each different bag. I'd like to be able to somehow get my designs - my shapes - into the machine and then have it cut them out for me. Can either one of these machines do that?

@debihumphrey3734 yes, both actually. There is a company that can make dies for the accuquilt machine for you. Sizzix is another cheaper option too. I have been looking at the Accuquilt system and boy it's expensive. I hadn't realised the Cricut could cut fabric! I spend a lot of time cutting 2 1/2" binding. Which machine do you use for cutting binding? I really like the look of the rotary cutter and am not confident about the folding. I also cut 4" strips for making bag straps so that would be another die on the accuquilt?

Thank you for the info, but you really need to state that you need a die for each size and shape. My friend has spent thousands of £’s to get the shapes and sizes she needs for her quilts. Me I am going for the circuit as you can draw your size and shape next to each other, cur fabric the width of the machine and up to 12 feet long. That’s a lot of 4 inch squares 😅

All cutting methods create waste, particularly triangles and appliqué shapes. Some people actually enjoy recutting the excess to create intentionally scrappy quilts. Or, give your scraps to a scrappy quilter. Or, use your “waste” fabric as stuffing for dog beds or cat beds for the ASPCA or similar organization. In short, waste fabric can be managed.

The Accuquilt machines can cut more than fabric. They can cut paper, light cardboard, felt, wool, etc. I have thought about getting a Cricut over many years but I’m just not a paper crafting person. If there is an alphabet I really, really want for a quilt, I have no problem with cutting the letters, tracing them onto fabrics backed with a fusible. I!m a bit older but I can still use scissors with no problem. Oh, I have the 3 different Accuquilt machines, too - they are fabulous.
