I found this so interesting. I'm a portrait artist & retired makeup artist but I always wished I could be a courtroom illustrator. I thought that I got my chance when I was put on jury duty. The judge caught me & ordered me to "stop drawing & start listening"!

Please note that “artistic talent” for drawing is a myth and a misconception that millions of people have accepted without much consideration. I have taught visual arts, architecture, art history, and design, as faculty in universities and colleges for 14 years. I have trained thousands of students how to draw from observation. Drawing is not a “talent” given from God. Drawing is actually a global skill that must be taught just like arithmetic, phonics, reading and writing must be taught. A global skill is a skill that, once taught to a person, can be used and practiced for the rest of that person’s life. I have had so many adult students who assumed that they had no “talent” for drawing, only to discover after completing my university observational drawing course(s), that they can draw brilliantly realistic with pencil and paper. There are exceptions (involving people with severe cognitive impairments or physical disabilities like being paralyzed) but out of the billions of people on the globe age 8 years and older, the majority of them can be taught the global skills of arithmetic, writing and reading, and can also be taught the global skills of drawing. For more information on the myth of “artistic talent” in drawing please reference the book by Dr. Betty Edwards titled “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” published by Tarcher-Penguin.

THIS!! I didn't start art at ALL until age 52. I got serious and committed time and effort and practice...NOTHING came naturally...and I've been juried in 2 shows now.

I agreed with you for so long, but the students I've taught have changed my mind...mainly, they will never be willing to put in the practice time it takes.

Short of having the opportunity and time of paying close attention to details of a suspect, good luck with these ‘Sketches’. I have never in my entire adult life, of 50-years, seen one captured criminal match a human witness’s facial composite. It has been proven, over and over, that a witness is the worst factor in solving crimes, unless the perpetrator has had some kind of exposure with the observed person in question. Clothing descriptions are about the only factor worth taking as probable. Height / weight, good luck...Tangible evidence is proof in the pudding.
