As someone who used to live in Bountiful, Winston Blackmore is actually my cousin, and this does not show the whole story. Many children, girls especially, are not given an education past 1st or 2nd grade. Girls do not get to decide whether they marry or not, in Winston's family too, you're eligible once you're fourteen, and you marry when and who the bishop tells you. If you don't agree you are excommunicated and if that's all you've ever known and believe you'll be damned, it's not a question you even consider. There is no choice for young girls. I left Bountiful in 2011, and it was not modern. All girls are not allowed to cut their hair, and it must be kept up. You had to wear long dresses. Winston is a liar. Almost everything he said in this video was a lie, the child trafficking, the bit about not touching fifteen year old girls (I should know, one of them was my sister), about the education. This guy is a crook, and I'm so glad he's in jail.

@SepherStar10 жыл бұрын
The women actually have a pretty good set up, provided the man is able to financially provide for them. The number of co-wives reduces the physical burden on them, both sexually and domestically, and there is always another woman around to help with child rearing. If one gets sick, there is always another woman there to care for her and her children, and there is very little these woman actually have to worry about. Compare that to your typical modern woman, who is left at home alone to raise children children, often even immediately after birth of the children, when she is sleep deprived and going through a lot of hormonal changes, while her husband is away for 8-10 hours per day. Also, in a lot of FLDS sects, it's really the men and boys who get the short end of the stick. They can be exiled from their communities by their leaders if they get on the wrong side of them, and sometimes these leaders will look for any reason they can to exile a man to increase their own marriage prospects. There isn't much they can do to the women, on the other hand, and they are outnumbered by them too. I guess the worst thing that can happen to a woman is she is could be forced into a marriage and raped, or "reassigned" against her will when her husband is exiled, though nothing actually prevents her from leaving with him but her own religious convictions or social bonds.

I’ve been in polyamorous relationships before and I’m not religious at all and at the time both of my partners were also of different religions (one was a mix of Muslim and Christian beliefs because his dad was Muslim and his mom was Christian so he grew up exposed to both and saw them as similar so he just picked what he thought was loving about each and went with that, the other was a Wiccan) we loved eachother, were all active with both of the other partners. I was dating the Christian/Muslim guy at first and we realized we both had a crush on the same person and that person seemed to like us both so we talked to them and they joined us. They weren’t forced to, and we weren’t initially going to polyamorous when we first got together but we were falling for the same person as well as each other and we were always open about our emotions towards other people so we never felt like the other could be cheating. If we were both 100% for being with the same person then we wouldn’t be with them we’re all equals in the relationship and I loved it. We only broke up because we chose to go to different schools on different sides of the country and we were determined to stay friends and maybe we’ll get back together when we’re all done with school but we were all at a point where we needed to go and focus on school and finding ourselves because we all had big life changes (my dad died, his mom got cancer and they were getting out of an abusive situation with their mother so we were all just overwhelmed with other things and decided mutually a relationship was too much to juggle as well at the moment)

I think that there is a huge difference between people who have open marriages/multiple partners (which can be OK if everyone consents to that) and polygamy as practiced by the FLDS/etc. If a couple wants to pull a third person in, whether just for sex or romance, whatever, you're not hurting anyone (I know a few polyamorous "couples", it is possible to make this work). It's strange, certainly, but not inherently bad. The key is that everyone needs to consent and everyone needs to have a voice in the relationship. But, when you start getting into situations where there is a man at the head and 2, 3, 4, 5+ women UNDER him, there are going to be problems. These polygamist sects encourage the men to use the women as breeding stock and not actually see them as people. It is physically impossible for Blackmore to give each of his 15 wives the attention that they need (not even talking about sex--just human interaction) - these poor women almost HAVE to have loads of kids just so that they can get their husband's attention for a hot minute. It is sad, and it is wrong.
@aaaaallllld75769 ай бұрын
An additional thing people with multiple partners should think about is the long-term effects of one male, or a small group of males, creating a lot of offspring, particularly in a smaller or isolated communities, or in religious communities that only marry within the faith. It can lead to accidental incest (i.e. people hook up who don't realize they are related) and it can cause all sorts of genetic problems. There's a reason that we see people with noticeably strange appearances in polygamist situations, nevermind all the genetic anomalies that we can't see.

I am a polygamous woman here. I see nothing wrong with it if certain measures are taken, for example, family meetings, making sure everyone feels heard and equal, etc. HOWEVER, this is not the right way to go about it. This is a cult type deal and this is not how polygamy really works or should. I like the idea of being able to be free to share your love with multiple people and to be completely ok with sharing partners with other people. I will never be ok with how this goes down. It isn't ok and never will be.

@OlmsteadKat6 жыл бұрын
Han W Exactly!
@MrsLyraGyrl6 жыл бұрын
It's illegal because it's a racket. Only the first wife and her children can be recognized as the husband's children. All of the other wives and children take on fake names. On the children's birth certificate, they list a fake name for the father (or just leave it blank when they get lazy), then they go apply for welfare. I know they said this family dont do that, but its modis operandi for most of the others. They call it bleeding the demon, or something like that. They believe they should take as much as they can from the government, because its evil. Think about that. 100-200+ children from one man receiving benefits. Add in the corruption at the top, the abuse (sexual, physical, emotional), the marriage of underage girls to middle age men, the brainwashing, and denial of proper educations. Then there's the incest, which is illegal. Many groups are suffering heavily from congenital defects that come from reccissive genes combining so much. They mostly only marry in- group, and groups like the Kingstens believe close incest (half-brother to half-sister is the best). A lot of babies are stillborn, or are left to die in a few days. They don't trust doctors or hospitals. Then they just get buried in the backyard, and the woman is blamed. Cap that off with the serious neglect, widespread criminal activity (rape, theft, money laundering, human trafficking, murder), and the fact that these groups are making hundreds of millions of dollars, but the women have to support themselves and the children, sometimes even paying rent for a rundown house to her husband, who doesn't live there. This is cult, using modern day slavery. I have no problem with polyamory between consenting adults, in whatever form it takes. Most of these groups, however, the marriages are not between consenting adults. When you're told at 15 that you're betrothed, then at 18- maybe, you're dad (who you only see at worship, once a month when it's your mom's night, and when it's time to marry you off) comes to you and says, "So you have your 50 y.o. uncle who has 6 wives, and your 25 y.o. cousin, choose your husband.", do you really think that's consentual? People don't just leave these groups, especially not the girls. They have to escape. No matter what sick things happen to them, "Keep sweet! You'll be rewarded in Celestial Heaven." People are always worried about Muslims, this is just another branch of the American Isil.
@OlmsteadKat6 жыл бұрын
Lyra H Jesus...... I didn't really break it down like you did. Seeing it in black and white is terrifying. Not many people consider all of the details. I simply saw adults in a relationship. I didn't think about what led up to it, or what happened in the years to follow. It's quite frightening to think that this happens quietly under our noses. We're taught to mind our own business so we don't look further into the situation. It's not until it's splashed across the news that we sit up and take notice. We act righteous when it's forced upon us. We never stepped back to prevent it from happening in the first place. It became a situation of "Well, it's in the news so we *have* to deal with it". For the years before that, it was "none of our business". Nobody wants to get their hands dirty. Nobody wants to be bothered with the messy truth. We can sit at home and watch documentaries and shake our heads. Screaming at TV's or phones about how wrong it all is. The world is messy and people just do not want to get dirty. We leave them to fight alone, or give up and give in to these men. So very wrong.

It's pretty well known that women's interest in sex tends to decline the longer they're with someone, and I'm sure lots of women wouldn't mind if their husband was "around" nearby but not bothering them for sex every night of the week. It's not for everyone and I like that a lot of the kids there are making up their own minds about how they want to live their lives.

WeirdyCat You are so RIDICULOUS! A man loses the ability to have an erection as he ages so after a certain age MEN shouldn't be married! That STUPID statement I wrote above is as IGNORANT as what you just said...

Rebecca Brose Actually it IS in the Bible. And many faithful men who were married. Were given even MORE wives by the Judeo/Christian God for being faithful. In fact there is a verse on how to take more than one wife in the Bible.

WeirdyCat Actually 50% is a lie. itss about 15% now. and polyandry makes a lot more sense. 1 man with 15 wives=130 children. That means on man has to provide resources, love, and support to not only 15 wives, but 130 children as well. The wives and children have to divy up limited resources and time creating chaos and competition. Wives have to deal with eachother on a daily basis because they are most likely at home together. Since sister wives, not only have to compete for a husband, but for resources for them and their children, they are going to resent their sister wives and their sister wives children and will want as little to do with them as possible. Since each woman in polygamy usually has many children, the children have to divide time and attention from not only their father, but also their mother who has way more household tasks, and more children to take care of. She is most likely not getting help from her husband, who is busy working and trying to juggle multiple wives/families. She also most likely wont be getting help from her sister wives who have their own children to take care of. Its not healthy to live in this constant stress for children. It's not proper. 3 men with 1 woman=10 children or less. Multiple men providing support, wealth, and love to one woman and fewer children works out much better. The children have a wealth of resources of support and ressources. There is less competition and chaos, because men leave the house, and dont have to deal with their brother husbands all day. They get more time from each gendered parent, and more attention in general. The men often help out with household chores, and the children dont have to divy attention/resources with 50+ siblings. This would also solves overpopulation.

Just the math alone is insane. I've seen comments saying he has 150 children. Divide that by 15 and that's about 10 kids per wife. Insane.

150 children from 27 wives at the time (I read an update somewhere).

The other issue is these women are so young and the men are old as dirt. Forget that. I sure wouldn't want an old man for a husband. It's legalized prostitution.
@opheliabloom83218 жыл бұрын
No, a prostitute sells a sexual service the way anyone who works does, and does not owe a client anything beyond that. These girls are not selling anything because they have no choice. That is called sexual slavery.

There is nothing wrong with polygamy if everyone is entering in it willingly and informed, the children are properly raised and educated and so on. The problem is it seems always to be connected to fanatical faiths and cults.

Are 12 year-olds of the age of consent. Are brides who are told to marry and want to refuse but they will be cut off from their entire {huge} family truly consenting? Are the children who are being SA’d {huge in this cult} consenting?
