4:43 Walter correcting Hank on how to pronounce “Learned” very subtly even given the circumstances of *almost* and very briefly getting caught
@draexian5307 ай бұрын
I obviously won't be specific, but as a pedant myself it is very easy to accidentally let a correction slip to the wrong person at the worst time. I have almost lost skin over that very mistake.
@PittsburghSonido4 ай бұрын
Why would that get him caught? It's how it's pronounced in context.
@Grant_Wolfman4 ай бұрын
Funny thing is that Walt actually incorrectly corrects Hank here, he's right that "learned" as an adjective is pronounced "LEARN-ed", but the poem is titled "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer", so it's a contraction. Besides, Gale recited the entire poem for Walt pronouncing it "Learn'd", and in all the recordings of the poem I've heard, the speakers, including but not limited to Neil DeGrasse Tyson, pronounce it it the same way.
@sonofbattles4 ай бұрын
@@Grant_WolfmanI’m not disagreeing with the pronunciation, just letting you know that you used two logical fallacies in your comment, “appeal to the masses” and “appeal to authority.” Just because a lot of people say or do X, that doesn’t mean that it’s right or that it’s ok to do. Believe it or not, it was socially acceptable for people to have “outside dogs” only a few decades ago. Everyone that kept a dog in their backyard 24/7 thought that it was ok at the time because so many other people did it. Sure, some might still do that to their dogs, but they don’t count as real people. Also, while NDT is admittedly an expert on astrophysics, he is not an expert on poetry or the English language. We should give as much credence to his pronunciation of words as to what he might have to say about the stock market. He can talk about climate change or evolution or other natural sciences and be afforded a certain degree of latitude, but his area of expertise is astrophysics, so until he gets a degree in another domain, one should not automatically believe everything he says on that subject. As he himself once tweeted, “people shouldn’t get vaccinated because “Tyson said so." They should get vaccinated because of evidence that it’s effective & safe.”
@Grant_Wolfman4 ай бұрын
@@sonofbattles yeah, that’s why arguing about pronunciation is such a pain since language is ultimately dictated by the masses. The Neil DeGrasse Tyson thing was pretty dumb, I will admit. I hate arguing about language, but I love pointing when Walter White is being a self-righteous idiot!

It was quite shocking when the show abruptly ended because Boetticher literally dedicated his notes "To Walter White" in bold underline text instead of just using his initials or something. I don't even know how someone writes in italics like that, but it definitely made for an interesting finale to say the least. The dining room scene where Hank arrests Walter literally the next morning right as Walter Jr. is having breakfast was definitely crazy.
@iangoodell84367 ай бұрын
I was gonna comment a similar joke but just got to thinking, as much as I loved Tohajilee, and Ozymandias, could this show have taken a different direction with Hank becoming aware of Walt’s secret and somehow becoming another accessory to enable it? I’d love an alternate plot line in a similar show, maybe with Hank afraid of the repercussions to his career and life, or alternately, somehow thinking this gives him an edge over his peers in the DEA, using Walt and DEA both to control the meth racket and maybe they turn on each other by end of the series, making moves at one another through other criminals and plea bargains when Skyler takes the kids, Marie and flees.
@GizmoBeachАй бұрын
I thought that was the alternative ending. The show I watched ended when Hank drove up and found Walt and Jesse stuck in a ditch, covered with meth dust in that RV. Hank was looking for minerals, it was all a coincidence. Interesting show, too bad it lasted just 40 minutes or so.

That was the smoothest lie I might have ever heard… You’d be forgiven for suspecting how quickly Walt redirected Hank to a poem embedded inside a journal which…as far as he knows…he only JUST picked up… …but of course Gale seems to be something of an artist; because he sketched a full portrait of Walt Whitman’s face on the page. This let Walt sell the story more easily…he flipped past a page with a literary icon; and just HAPPENED to remember the poem. Man…I really love it when the writing hits that sweet spot.
