Seeing Raylan lose control is jarring. Only something like Helen’s death could do that. Or anybody significantly close to him.

It happens only three times I think: 1) Helen's death 2) Winona being held at gun point by Nicky's thugs and 3) Arlo's death. Each time he is close to losing it. Anyone else, he may show mercy.

Bit by bit, as time went on you could slowly begin to see him becoming more unhinged to a point. Helen's death was the first major thing, then Winona leaving him behind the Gary thing along with the whole Givens/Bennett thing. The tipping point to me came when Nicky Augustine sent those thugs after Winona. Dickie is super and I mean SUPER FORTUNATE Raylan let him live when Doyle and Raylan rolled up on him after this. Sadly, this ended rather badly for Boyd as Ava ended up getting shot. Guess it worked out in the end as Raylan did end up shooting Dickie when Dickie tried to go after Winona chasing down his mother's money the following season.

I think you mean that Dickie tried to go after Loretta. Dickie never went after Winona.
