I’m really glad that this video makes it so clear that there’s a BIG difference between the “baby blues”/postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. So much of the time people seem to get the two confused, and most Yates documentaries I’ve seen don’t stress the difference enough, IMHO. While I’ve known many women who experienced postpartum depression, I’ve only known one single woman who suffered from actual postpartum psychosis: she went from being a totally normal, rational woman before giving birth...to having to be wrestled to the ground by numerous cops at gunpoint, after a crazed rampage which involved driving the wrong way on the interstate, before ditching the car and running through multiple lanes of traffic, waving her husband’s gun around while raving incoherently. (Thankfully, she’d left her baby at home when she went on her rampage, because part of her psychosis involved thinking that her baby was in danger, and that she needed to get away from her home in order to draw the threat away and defend her infant.) I met her a year or so after this incident, and you would never in a million years guess that she wasn’t the most normal, suburban soccer mom ever. Scary, scary stuff.

It can occur in women who have never had a psychotic episode before or any mental health diagnosis. It doesn’t discriminate. Andrea Yates also had some very strong religious beliefs prior to her postpartum psychosis and often with psychosis those beliefs can become delusional and extreme. They were already extreme so it was never going to be anything but out of control with Andrea Yates. This should of been dealt with with her hospital admissions prior to the horrific event that occurred. This could of been prevented!! And the medical professionals should of seen the seriousness of what was happening. It wasn’t that long ago. That is no excuse. The husband is someone who needs a reality check. He was too focused on having too many children without considering how it was affecting her well-being and those of their children. She was admitted to hospital for more than one suicide attempt. What more does a spouse have to know before they start giving her what she needs? Duh!! It's a well known fact that there should be a longer period of time between any birth of a child in order for a woman can recuperate from her carrying a child for 9 mos. and then giving birth. Any future children are also more likely to fair much better when the mother's pregnancies are properly timed. Listening to him, he sounds like he's more than a few bricks short of a load. Self entitlement and and self absorbed and just blatantly selfish.

Not one single word about the culpability of those preachers who brainwashed her into believing that Hell existed, and that her children could go there. If Christianity didn't have those viscous, evil elements, then even with their mother's mental illness, those children would all still be alive.

You're not too bright either if you think this woman is a witch and a monster...she was absolutely influenced by what the preacher told her, no question about it! Are suicide bombers not influenced by their religious zealots indoctrination? Yes they are and this vulnerable woman was totally influenced by the preacher's words - dump fat ass...is it too complex for you to realise its not one lone factor but a combination of a particular chronic illness and indoctrination that lead her to make terrible choices...that does not mean 1000's of others would also do it...dump fat ass lol, my god your thick as pig poo

I agree and I have been there in the deepest depression to think theres no other choice but to end it ! I now am glad I didn't end my life but at the depth of it then I easily could have and if there is a god he has a very sick sense of humour to allow the suffering he lets happen in this world!
@hans_von_twitchy10146 жыл бұрын
The problem isn't that God has a sick sense of humour -- you can't blame someone who doesn't exist. The problem is that priests spout lies that affect people in ways the priests refuse to take any responsibility for. Even worse, the priests have somehow fooled most of society into not holding them accountable either. That poor woman thought her children would grow up and commit sins, and therefore be sent to Hell. She believed that if she killed them now, they would be unblemished, so go to Heaven. Given what the priests fooled her into believing, her decision to kill her children was the right thing for a caring mother to do. It isn't God who is sick; it is those who insist that religion promises after-life rewards or punishments, and that the afterlife is vastly more important than real life. When people make decisions based on unreal myths, those decisions can have very bad real-world consequences. The sort of consequences that has hijackers fly planes into skyscrapers.

Narcissistic parents are great at wanting children but then you don't exist anymore nor the children. It's complex They say b when you tell them a in parenting. Like I said it's complex. It's easier to raise a child as a single parent because you are already one but with a narcissist you have him or her as an extra child.

I read a book about this case and I remember it saying how Andrea was doing after all the court cases. She gets a bit better, enough to understand what she has done and then that triggers a worsening of her mental health again. One of the psychiatrists also said she was the sickest person they had ever met. All because her insurance wouldn’t cover anymore time in hospital treating her mental health illness. 😢 Entirely preventable and so so tragic.

I thought that was weird too. I have a feeling they meant postpartum psychosis wasn't known that well around that time. PPD also happens a lot when woman already have a history of depressions and suicidal thoughts. My doctors say I'm at a high risk because I have been suffering from depressions for years. But in a weird way I think were I to have a child it might actually help me. It's been my biggest dream ever. But for my child's sake I'm not going to start having children until my depression is a lot less! Hope all was fine with you following the birth!

You're right but she had more post partum psychosis rather then post partum depression. From the later court appearances you could tell that she was on antipsychotic meds as she had put on a lot of weight. Poor Andrea was really not in her right mind and although she knew it was wrong she felt it was the best thing to do. This may not have happened if she had not stopped her meds when she got pregnant again, even though she was advised not to get pregnant.
@MsSmashy-rl8wq6 жыл бұрын
Ainiewainy you are very wise to do so. I’m having my first, have a history of depressive disorders and am high risk. I waited to be stable for close to 5yrs for my own ideas that would somehow mean it would all be ok. But nothing prepares you for how your hormones change your mind. As long as you have a strong support network, a loving and caring partner, a health team, then go for it. Pregnancy is a strange thing but when your hormones kinda even out it gets easier. Just cause you are at high risk for post natal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be a mother. If anything it means that if you were to get post natal you would be on top of treating it and getting support for it before a woman who has no history of mental health issues. My drs recommended to up my medication but it’s safe during pregnancy so I’m ok with that. Good luck in your journey lovely. Don’t let the idea that having a history of depression should stop you from being a mum or will effect how you will be as a mother. If anything through your treatment you will actually learn a lot about yourself, communication and gain skills that will make you a better parent. Love and light to you dear 💗💕💖

Everyone around this woman failed her and her children. Everyone especially her husband literally stood and watched her suffer and refused to help her until it was too late. Rusty's never ending selfishness had a major part to play here. He pushed her beyond her limits to have one child after another against her doctor's orders, and without providing her with adequate support! He encouraged her not to take her medications, he was strictly advised not to leave her alone under any circumstances, let alone entrusting five small children to her, but he did. This woman was so sick she couldn't even take care of herself! What was he thinking?? The sight of him as a groom next to another woman made me sick because he robbed Andrea and their children of their lives but he gets to live his and it's so unfair
