Riddlesdown Common child rapist was a local pet shop owner, married. He was given 10 years in 1999. Police thought the sentence was too short and possibly appealed.

Paul Sullivan was convicted of the attacks on the boys in 1999. He actually lived in Catford and owned a pet shop. The police did not initially consider him a good suspect because he was married - underlining how patchy offender profiling was back then (the 1990s were also when appalling mistakes wirh offender profiling led to a massive miscarriage of justice with the Rachel Nickell murder when Colin Stagg was wrongly convicted). Many infamous sex attackers have been married (Brian Field, a number of the Sidney Cooke gang, Steve Wright, and perhaps most famously Peter Sutcliffe). Paul Sullivan was only convicted when DNA samples were obtained.

Profiling is still poor and in Sullivan's case was appalling and put off many witnesses

Psychological profiling has no scientific evidence base and is on a par with fortune telling. Lots of people seemed to think that TV drama Cracker was real, most worryingly, that included the police

Did they catch the killer of Julie Smith? Looked it up but couldn't find anything online. Surely they solved it, it sounded so clearly like an abusive ex.

It's a weird one,. I can't see any appeals post 2011, no information about a trial after that point but in 2017 someone used a FOI request to ask for a list of unsolved murders from Humberside Police and Julie Smith's name wasn't included. It seems someone was arrested in the 90s and charged but the case was dropped due to issues with evidence, but even if the police were not looking for anyone else and the person is now deceased, I don't think the police would usually close a case?

So awful. Those poor children 😢 I wondered if someone *hired* "a friend" to get rid of Julie. The spray didn't have to say anything in words, could've just been a sign, as in, look out for the sprayed window aka "set fire here".

My mam watched this religiously, she was desperate to ring in and grass a criminal up. She once claimed to have seen a wanted murderer in Middlesbrough bus station and even though the bloke was arrested about 300 miles away the same day, she still insisted it was him, waiting for the 28.
