Its Reid's tribute to his mentor's Gideon's memory. Gideon would have loved to see his protege developed his "game skills" so much as chess player & as a FBI agent.

There’s a technical error in this scene. When Reid speed reads vertically, you can see his mouth moving. Speed readers do not sub vocalize. The information goes directly into the brain too quickly for them to bother to sub vocalize.

Actually true, no one really wants to lose on purpose in chess, and by adopting irregular/non-book openings that don't have theory, the chances are losing are actually so high that even someone likr Dr Reid who wanna play every move still would want to win. That's why he just quit.
@dantediavolo41473 жыл бұрын
I have a problem with this scene, he is moving his lips when he is speed reading, that just doesn't happen in the real world, speed readers like me learn early on, well I learned when I was five that if you truly want to speed read the best way is to press your tongue against the roof of your mouth, that stops your from mouthing the words and increases your focus. Trust me, even an old Granpa can speed up his reading by just following this trick, my Grandpa went from something close to a 4th-grade reading level to a high school senior level in a matter of months.
@woodpecker81163 жыл бұрын
Thats pretty common. They way chess is portrayed here is also far from reality. Like the end scene when he is like "check mate in 12" after looking for a few seconds. They just take everything a bit to far^^

Reid is also a genius that can see things in a matter of seconds. He's a fictional character. What he does will not always line up with the real world.

@@ninjanibba4259 I do indeed. Which is why I said "not always". There are people out there like Reid, but it's incredibly rare. My point was that not everything about fictional characters has to line up with the real world, if you understand what I mean.

Even though Spence has an eidetic memory and an IQ of 187, there’s no way he’s played through all possible games in chess. The number of possible games , also called The Shannon Number, is 10^120 or 69,352,859,712,417 possible games after 10 ply (5 moves for both players). At 15 ply, there’s 2,015,099,950,053,364,471,960 possible games. There’s more possible chess games than there are GRAINS OF SAND ON EARTH. If it takes you 1 second per move, it would take ~1.269x10^34 years or ~9.2x10^23 times the age of the universe. As much as I love this show, this is impossible.

Agree with you,am 1700 rated and i think he is over rated,i will beat him easily,also IQ has nothing to do with chess.
@awetails Жыл бұрын
Isn't The Shannon Number just ultimately meaningless, though? It does show the meaninglessness of trying to solve chess by brute force but that isn't what Spence needs to be doing. If you limit the possibilities to the amount of sensible games the is much smaller, furthermore being able to evaluate game's potential allows you to make this number lower still, as in once you get into a game with obvious advantage to one player you might as well not consider any following moves as the probability of you winning is high enough...
@mouse2mail Жыл бұрын
He doesn't say he actually plays all of them, just that he attempted to, and that the number is large.

Its so silly how people think that being smart means being good at chess, independently of practice or anything XD, being smart only makes you learn faster. In real life, the smartest people in the world that dont play chess regularly would get crushed by your average club player.

Wow, as a serious chess player I can say that this is the worst chess scene I’ve ever seen in any kind of media. Almost everything Spencer says is completely asinine. You’d think the writers would consult with a chess player before making a scene like this
@mikelm2429 Жыл бұрын
As a non serious chess player, I completely agree
@redskins973 Жыл бұрын
1. Seeing checkmate in 3 rather than 5 isn’t really a flex. Yeah, it’s better, but it doesn’t really matter. 2. Being good at chess isn’t really indicative of intelligence. Saying that someone was the best mind you ever went up against is really weird. 3. Attempting to memorize every possible chess game is ridiculously stupid. The number of possible games exceeds the number of atoms in the universe. 4. He said all games are basically variations on the same themes, but he’s not clear if he means all possible games or all games from competent humans or computers. The former is obviously false, and the latter is somewhat true, although there is tons of variation in pacing and general patterns even between optimally played games. Some games will be faster, some will be slower. Some will have more aggressive openings and end faster, some will have less aggressive openings and take longer to complete. Some games are known forced draws. Some games are more tactical, some games are more positional. Some reach an endgame early on, some have protracted middle games. 5. “Inevitable checkmate” wtf? Is he unaware of draws? About 60-70% of games at the top level are drawn, and so are plenty of games at the amateur level. If both sides play perfectly, the outcome should be a draw. 6. The whole scene doesn’t make much sense. Serious chess players don’t hang out in the park; they compete in tournaments and play online. Or, if they want to be more social, they play chess at chess clubs or friends’ houses. The idea that great chess minds get together in a public park to play and discuss chess is several decades out of date. It’s like the writer’s only experience with chess was watching Searching for Bobby Fischer while drunk.

you clearly do not know Spencer's character, he's an FBI agent, not an actual serious chess player. obviously there will be faults here and there, but he's not saying he's played through every single chess game, hes just come up with several strategies drawn from those variations. also when he refers to inevitable checkmate, he's not talking about every single chess game, he's talking about a specific type of chess game where it's quite obvious who will win.
