What is the version number of Scribe's software? (I am still waiting for mine, almost four months after pre-ordering it; quite infuriating. Got mine the day after you and, like yourself, I love it. Best feeling reader I’ve ever had, bar none. As to the pen being in a wonky place occasionally, if I’m not expecting to take notes, I just set it to the side so I don’t chance losing it in the couch cushions. Cover with pen holder coming soon, so that will fix that problem. I’m not so much worried about taking it on the daily commute because of its size as I am storing it when I’m not using it. So, commute + reader = Oasis. At least for the moment. Love the videos. Saw how excited you were to be getting the Scribe and I felt the exact same way. So far, it looks like neither of us have been disappointed. Thanks for keeping us informed and entertained…

I've had my Scribe for the last three days and agree with you that it is an excellent device overall. My biggest gripe is the PDF -lack of adequate-functionality. If you load the PDFs via the USB cable you cannot use the pen. If you email PDFs to your Scribe's Amazon address then you can write on the pdf. However the emailed version will not rotate to landscape view -bizarre

I always buy a TPU clear case that just covers the back and sides of my Kindles. It give a better grip and the one I bought for Kindle Scribe from Amazon has an extended slot built into the side for the pen so I don't have to worry about it hitting something and getting lost. I know a lot like their Kindle covered with a full case but I for some reason just love looking at the Kindle without it. Plus less weight. :)

I read 4 books over the weekend and my battery is at 49% so a good run. I have had a few jumps I found the screen too responsive to my clumsy oasis fingers. I bought a fabric cover so the pen sits at the bottom, I do feel that’s why they did the cover that way. I agree pen on top would have been much better. I love the size of scribe I can sit back and read with a decent font size and keep a hefty page volume so I am happy like a big hardback. The size alone for me make it’s a great purchase. My poor eyes don’t need my reading glasses! I don’t mind the writing functions I will never use it for more than planning books and reading plans. So it’s perfect and will save the many paper books I plan my months book in and it’s all in one place. It’s an e reader at end of day not a tablet! I use my in bed and it’s fabulous cushions on the duvet it’s a delight. I do know exactly what you mean by feeling more in your book on THE bigger screen. Got mine the same day as you, haven’t had any of the issues you described. You may have a faulty device, might be worth contacting Amazon. I agree with pretty much everything you said, it really is the ultimate Kindle, the note taking is a bonus as far as I’m concerned. Simple compared to my Remarkable 2, but does everything I need it to. Certainly won’t be using my Remarkable 2 as often now. I have been writing on pdf’s, but only ones I sent to the device via Amazon, not ones side loaded. The pen issue is easily resolved, either take it off while reading or get the case, which has a slot on its bottom or top, depending on the configuration your using.

Lovely video on the Scribe. Question for you: I have the Kindle Paperwhite 2017, Kindle Oasis 2019 and recently the Kindle Paperwhite 6.8’. I have a usual impairment in that I have to read with the largest or next to largest font available. I would only use the Scribe for reading. Great video, Olly -- thanks! I wonder how much I would miss the page-turn buttons? I remember thinking I wouldn't like them when I first switched to Oasis and now I wonder if I could live without them! I can probably squint my eyes and get past the price point, but I'm becoming a bit concerned about the price of the ebooks themselves. I try to wait until a title is on sale for two or three dollars, but it feels like a lot of new releases in the US are $17, $18, or even $20 these days. Are you seeing those types of increases in the UK as well?

@@CriminOllyBlog Good to know on the buttons. I've decided to wait until after Christmas to see what sorts of gift cards come in before I pull the trigger on the Scribe. Interesting about the UK e-book prices. Here, new Stephen King is $17 (more than the hardcover), new Tolkien is $22, new Kim Stanley Robinson is $19. The Scribe seems like a work-in-progress to me. But for that kind of money I'd expect a bit more than that. I suppose we're at that stage now with Kindle (rather like with the iPhone) that there just isn't much more you can do with the product, beyond making it a bit better. Nothing really radical and exciting, so we have these incremental updates designed to fix a problem that didn't really exist in the first place. I'm sure 90% of users will quickly stop using the note-taking feature and treat it as an ordinary Kindle with a bigger screen.
@CriminOllyBlog Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's very much the problem with modern tech. They need to keep making new devices to keep people interested, by the actual advances in technology often don't really merit them. I think manufacturers have given up worrying about everything being perfect software wise when they ship, as they know we've all become used to frequent updates
@hollyc4624 Жыл бұрын
Great review and very appreciated. Mine should be here this upcoming weekend. I’ve read in landscape on my iPad forever but recently switched to portrait and like it. I do think some software updates will fix some of these issues. I was hoping to use it for annotating my NetGalley docs, but sounds like that won’t be immediately possible. I am wondering though if reading a document like NG, I can still have a dedicated notebook and open it while reading to record any thoughts. And I’m wondering about emailing a pdf version of any notes I take to myself and then opening on my iPad. I should be able to import them to a note taking app, like GoodNotes, and then further write on the pdf. So glad to hear that the device is so nice to read and to write on. I definitely prefer a paper like feel so that will be great. Thanks again!

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply to this! Hope you have your Scribe now and you're enjoying it. It turns out there is a way to annotate non-kindle books - you have to upload them via the send to kindle web page rather than emailing them. A bit of a pain, but better than nothing.

@@CriminOllyBlog I’ve been playing with mine. I was reading a book when it arrived and highlighted and annotated in a note for each section. Then I tried a NetGalley document and highlighted in that. I also started a notebook for an upcoming book club pick that we did an early discussion. So I was able to take notes for that now but then can add to them when we start the reading. The one thing that made me laugh and think of your comment about when to use it and when it would be less useful, was me trying to use it to read lying down. I took a gamble and sold my Supernote... not without serious misgivings. My scribe arrives tomorrow. The SN device is amazing and the company behind it is fantastic. One thing they do is have an online roadmap of where future updates are going. If Amazon did that with the scribe, it would boost sales because people would not be concerned about the simplistic state of the notebook. Currently, those purchasing the scribe just have to hope and pray that the notebook feature will advance. I imagine there will be updates, but of what quality?

Yeah it will be interesting to see what happens with it. I do agree that publishing their roadmap would be a great thing for them to do. That does sound like an annoying bug.

I find that the highlight function on the Scribe is really erratic. It's hard to highlight a long paragraph without it getting broken into random pieces, So a single highlight turns into three or four highlight notes.Otherwise I am really liking the Scribe.

I don't think I've encountered that issue on mine yet

It sounds like it could be very useful for me as a reviewer, & editor, but I fear I'm unlikely to be able to afford one for the foreseeable future, in that it costs more than my meagre monthly income. This is why I have an ultracheap made in China tablet. iPads are out of my price range too. Thankfully, we don't have to live on just my pension. We're not that badly off, it's just the spending money that is limited. 🙂 I do have questions, though. My handwriting is so bad that even I can't read it. Would it be possible to use a Bluetooth keyboard to take notes? I remember sending you electronic editions of Occult Detective Magazine a while back, but I don't remember if I gave you Kindle copies. Let me know, because it would be really useful to me to know how they look on that big screen - in particular the sections with lots of small cover scans etc. TV

Sorry for the delay! Yes you sent me azw3 files so I'll load them up and send you some photos. I don't think it does (or will) support a bluetooth keyboard, but the on screen keyboard works pretty well

I'm not an Ipad user but it sounds like the Ipad has more features for reading ebooks. Frankly, I don't use my kindle anymore and I don't think this new device will make me change from using my phone for most of my reading. The notes feature is kind of intriguing though.

Yeah this is definitely a very focussed device, but personally I much prefer it for reading to the iPad

why is the hardware good? Are you based off only on 300 DPI? Because the core is only 1.2GHz and 1 GB Ram 😅

I’m not sure I understand the question! It’s good because it feels very solid and works well.

tech specs on a device like this are useless. The hardware is being judged on build quality, usability and feel, not a spec sheet.

@@MC-ov8dr while true a little bump of power doesn’t hurt especially considering it’s Amazon they can afford to do that
@slothrob Жыл бұрын
It has the power it needs for what it does. Limiting the processor speed probably improves the battery life, which is more important than speed for a device like this.
@MC-ov8dr Жыл бұрын
@@LvUhcX What benefit does 'a little bump of power' give in this case though? Just because they can afford to, does it make sense for this device? It's a pretty simple and straightforward device and performs it's intended functions well. All any extra CPU will do is drain the battery faster. The e-ink screen can only refresh/render at a certain speed, there's really no point to adding 'more under the hood' for a device like this. Amazon could afford to give everyone in the united states a kindle for free, it doesn't mean it makes sense.

Wow for the price that is a BIG bug. I would have thrown a hissy fit. I'm surprised they have hand writing featrures, I would have thought the keyboard is enough. I've heard the next model is going to be called the Kindle Chicken Scratch 🐔🐔 The size, the price, too heavy for bed time reading, no colour, no good on public transport - it's just all wrong. It's the Apple Newton 1993 all over again. 🍎 And isnt reading in baths only done in movies ?🤨

I bought one… absolutely unfinished software functionality on the note taking side. At this point, it’s a glorified kindle oasis (without the functional buttons).

@@CriminOllyBlog I do love reading on it too. It's a beast of a reader! I am praying that Amazon makes some really refine improvements and bug squashing as we move forward.
