I just love how Jessica Chastain's character is shown that she is mentally and physically stuck in the past. The movie takes place around late 1890s, but she is dressed in late 1870s gowns, almost 20 years out of style.

I don't understand why promoters feel the need to cram an entire movie into a two minute trailer & ruin the experience for the audience...

Saw your review of this movie a few days ago, and it made me go back and watch it. When it initially came out in theaters, I couldn’t wait to see it. I’m a huge Guillermo del Toro fan. Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my all-time favorites. Was so shocked leaving the theater thinking that was not an enjoyable movie, at all. After listening to your review, I thought that it really was exactly the kind of movie I should love...gothic horror tale, and that maybe I should revisit it . I did and loved it! Think I was expecting something else the first time I saw it or was too overhyped due to it being a GdT movie. Anyway...thanks for your review! Love your channel - so glad I found it. I have very similar taste in movies and look forward to watching more of your videos. 😁

Thanks so much of this review! I really liked the trailers, and was confused why everyone online was calling it horror. I really liked the creepy romance story of the trailer, and that's what I want to see when I see the movie, so this movie sounds perfect for me. If it was horror I actually would be less inclined to see it, but because of your review I'll probably check it out today.

I think it might have been the novel she worte, because I noticed at the end credits, when the book closes, it said: "La Cumbre Escarlata por Edith Cushing" which is basically "Crimson Peak by Edith Cushing" but I dunno haha

It's refreshing to see this from another perspective as I think most of the reviews for this I have seen are pretty mixed. I largely have mixed feelings about this film myself though, my biggest problem with the film was Edith's character. She just seemed way to naïve for me, especially after its already revealed that she's smart. I'm going into SPOILER territory here but after the scene where her father was brutally murdered, doesn't she think to herself something isn't quite right there? :/ I felt the ghosts in the story as great as they look add little to the film, and also I didn't like exposition scene where she finds out the true nature of the Sharpe's either because I felt like things kinda went to a complete stop! You kinda knew from the start something was iffy with them, and with someone like Guillermo Del Toro directing the film, I feel he could have revealed this in a more creative way, especially with the ghosts. I really did like Jessica Chastain's performance in this film a lot though, she was very unsettling and shes a very convincing nut job throughout, I liked Tom Hiddleston too and I kinda like how with his character it was like he was at war with himself as things went on, he was quite an interesting character. I think I will be getting the blu ray too, because I kinda want to see it again though despite some of the problems I had with the film. There is so much beauty to this film with the look of the house the creative designs of the ghosts, and those last scenes gave the film a great finish, I'm sad I walked away feeling a bit underwhelmed. You never know, I felt like this about Prometheus the first time I watched it, but when I revisited it I enjoyed it a lot more for what it was. I promise my opinion is not based on the trailer either, but I agree I think this film is marketed as something it isn't. With Guillermo Del Toro as director I was never going to miss it anyway :)

+Scott Bailey SPOILERS >>> I wondered the same thing about the murder of her father and how she didn't question it, but then again she was very distraught by the news. She kind of lost it in the morgue (the whole "he's cold" thing), so I think it's possible that she just couldn't process what happened properly. Oddly, I actually would like to read the novelization (apparently, this exists) of the movie and see if things like this will be explained. I'm also REALLY curious if the whole part of the movie in the mansion was actually her novel - I wouldn't be surprised if Del Toro quietly pulled that trick. I actually think Crimson Peak will be one of those films that finds its audience later on, and will do better in sales than it did in theatres. Looking forward to whatever Del Toro does next!

SPOILERS!!! Thinking about it, the film does have almost a dreamlike look and feel to it as well, so this theory definitely makes sense :) As you mention, the house is like a character in of itself, plus you have the designs of the ghosts, and also throughout the film you see Edith wearing a lot of elaborate dresses as well almost like she's in a fairytale gone wrong. And I really have to suspend disbelief at the way they revealed it was actually Lucille who killed Ediths father because I really find it hard to believe she would be strong enough to smash someones face in so hard it would be able to break the sink ;) I guess the film does have you thinking about it long after watching it. Its one of those films I can see myself enjoying more with repeated viewings, that wouldn't be the first time with Guillermo :) And maybe it is one of those films that's not appreciated now, but will be in years to come. I'll watch anything Del Toro does, as he always does great fantasy films with elements of horror in them.

I have to say this movie was better than what the trailers advertised this movie as. I thought it worked well as a gothic romantic movie. I do feel horror fans will be really disappointed by this film since I didn't find this film to be scary at all. Also some of the violence that made this an R rated movie was a little too violent in some places. I don't think this is one of delToro's best movies but I'm glad I got to check it out. Also I would recommend to not see this in IMAX since it didn't really do anything special.

+Ian Bulaclac I actually saw it in IMAX and I'm glad I did - it felt very immersive. I don't think horror fans should look to Del Toro for horror though - he doesn't make horror films, at least not what modern audiences consider to be horror.

Now that I think about it, this movie totally felt like a book, and the romance didn't bother me. I agree it looked gorgeous, and the soundtrack was amazing as well. The one thing I disagree on is I HATED Edith. She's dull, boring, weak, and falls in love for no reason way too fast. And I actually thought Charlie was fine.

I totally agree with you, Mariana! I also thought the trailer was selling the movie way differently than how it's actually portrayed. I kinda knew that Guillermo was saying that it wasn't full-on horror (b/c I'm just that obsessive about it and watched every interview he did prior to the movie coming out a million times over), but the movie was still able to invert my expectations and turn them 180 degrees around.

+1313fina It's kind of sad that the director has to go and convince people that the movie isn't actually what it's being advertised as. I will never understand why studios try to sell movies with misleading marketing - that just upsets the viewers who came to see one thing and got another.

Loved how they used the novel to foreshadow the movie and the role of the ghosts. I just love that this was not a horror because in my experience horror movies aren't that good. I loved the detective element and the unfolding of the plot. It was not that clever, and was a tad paint by numbers at points. Not sure this has much rewatchability at least not from a plot point of view. I just thought that this was pretty much your standard classic gothic horror, much like the remake of The Wolfman was. Both are meticulously beautiful and glittering with tropes and cliches and introduces nothing new to the genre, merely revisits a previous one with nostalgic glasses.

Really interesting. I saw the first half of your review and went to see Crimson Peak on the strength of it and because I'm a big fan of Guillermo. I just watched the rest of the review. I don't know whether being brought up in England and endless period dramas on TV had an impact but the story felt very unoriginal. It looked gorgeous, was well acted but didn't enthral or do anything I'd not seen many times before. The plot was telegraphed way in advance, it never did anything unexpected. I did pick up the fact the discussion on her story seemed to be speaking to the audience directly but couldn't work out to what end. Will definitely get on blu-ray if just to hear Guillermo's commentary. Great reviews IB, always very insightful even if we don't agree.

+John Potter Thanks for watching! For me, Del Toro films aren't really about the plot as much as they are about "getting there", if that makes sense. I gotta say that my fav part about the plot is that it's not a crazy supernatural story, where ghosts (or vampires, or werewolves, oh my) terrorize and harm people. The only supernatural thing going on here is ghosts that one character sees, which might as well be a metaphor for her being perceptive sleuth. All the harm here comes form human side of the story. Which is in itself a pretty powerful message.

I was already excited to see this movie, but it's great to hear a more realistic idea of what it's about. I actually hesitated about seeing it from the trailers because I thought it was primarily a horror film (and we all know how I feel about those). +Lindsay Weimer I actually thought about you after I watched the movie, and how you would probably enjoy it way more than what you would think after watching the trailer. Don't get me wrong, there are SOME scary elements to it but it's not at all horror in the modern sense of the genre. Yes, thank you. I loved it as well and was the only one in my crowd that did. I added the house as one of the cast as well and didn't really understand everything, the ghosts were kind of a mess, like half an hour of the movie was missing or something, but other than that I related to this type of storytelling far better than a few of the previous movies I saw with excellent reviews that left me uninspired. Don't understand who did the washing of the clothes in that house, though. It was a really dirty house and yet they all always had such neat clean long dresses...

+Impression Blend I like it. Agree with pretty much everything you said. It's a genre mash up between a gothic romance and haunted mansion thriller, with a touch of gore. I'm afraid Charlie Hunnam is not going to be movie star, he doesn't have "it". Either you're a great actor or have great screen presence, and he has neither. He doesn't understand that in this type of genre movie, you need to ham it up a little bit. When he was in a scene with the other leads, his level of intensity didn't match the others.

I just saw it knowing exactly the type of movie it was. Firstly, it looks absolutely stunning, just gorgeously Gothic. The central trio are well very cast and Wasikowska, Chastain and Hiddleston can do no wrong. My main issue is that I feel it is style over substance. If you strip away the admittedly amazing visuals, there is very little to latch on to. We've seen the main plot devices in previous horrors and thrillers all the way back to HItchcock. The script could have been much better - I was really intrigued with how Mia's character would develop after the first act, but there was no real character arc for her; and I didn't buy into the love story either. It felt too quick and forced and unearned, especially from the viewpoint of Hiddleston's character and how it completely changes his motivations. There is a lot to like but I wish the romance was more believable and Wasikowska was given more to do.

As for the trailers, I think it worked really well, I mean sure they played on the horror element, but anyone with any sense could have seen that wait there's more to this than spookiness, there's a story here that the trailers only barely hint at and it is only by watching the movie will you see the narrative flower unfurl and blossom into its maddening beauty. I'd rather trailers down play the majority of the movie rather than promise more than the movie delivered, chick I felt was the case with Pan which was... Terrible.

+Ross Bauer You'd be surprised - after watching the trailers most people took away that it's a pretty-looking horror film. I think they showed way too much from the last third of the movie. I hear horrendous things about Pan... Is it really THAT bad?

+Impression Blend For me Crimson Peak is the sort of movie that you have to allow to surprise you. I guess the trailer worked for me because I'm not really a horror fan so I was looking for something beyond the cliched scares and stupid jump scare BS, even if it's just the actors involved. Hiddleston's suave, Lokiisms, Chastain's best Eva Green impression and Wasikowska's naievete, and Hunnam's by the book role were nothing to write home about but if you like classic tropes and characters then this movie works. Pan is confused, it tries to be deep and epic, and at the same time panders to kids, the humour doesn't work and Jackman is probably the most laugh out loud awful that I've seen him. The pirates are comedy pirates and the natives aren't really native, more like a hippie parade explosion in the jungle :p Good performances? Didn't find any.

Ross Bauer Sorry to hear the performances didn't work for you in Crimson Peak. Not sure what you mean by Lokiisms - seemed pretty different to me, even though the moral ambiguity is there. I think Chastain's performance deserves more credit that Eva Green impression, really liked her in this. Have to agree on Hunnam though, plus his accent was very strange. Definitely skipping Pan, doesn't sound like there is anything about that movie that's worth the price of a ticket.

+Impression Blend Oh no, I meant that the performances here were pretty good :) I just meant that they were rather familiar in that perhaps it was deliberate or otherwise, but the performances were evocative of other such roles within the realm of gothic romance, which is no fault of the actors. I felt this was a cliche heavy genre film, which is not a bad thing, it's just that there was nothing new or unpredictable, for me at least, which is why I love the deception of the trailers because that is what trailers should do, give you a sense of atmosphere, hint at plot, but make one curious to see the movie. Terminator Genisys and Jurassic World both had awful trailers that gave everything away but I went to see it hoping that there was more to the movie, which was not the case. For Crimson Peak there was so much more. Sumptuous, intricate, and atmospheric, if trite and hackneyed in a good way.

+Impression Blend Also Lokiisms are just my way of saying that Hiddleston seemed to be channelling his smooth as silk Marvel antagonist at times, something he does very well. Truth be told I really would love to hear your take on Pan. I mean just because I thought it was a waste of time and talent doesn't mean it's not likeable :)

The film did receive mixed reviews, and my personal take on it is well - mixed. :-)The film for me was an "eye candy" to watch. It was really pretty. I did not like the ghosts though. They might be cool as creatures, but as "ghosts" they were way too detailed. The performances were as good as the characters allowed meaning Jessica Chastain gave probably the best performance in the pisture while Charlie Hunnam ... - well, the excavating machine they were building had more character than the guy poor Charlie had too play. A lot of people complain on Mia Wasikowska, I'm happy I'm not the only one who thought she did ok. My biggest problem with this movie was actually the plot. It was too cliche. You could tell from the get go 'who's who' and how its gonna develop. Also there were some funny concepts which made little sense (you've got a fricking HOLE in your roof! Maybe you should do sth about it?) And true - the trailer for this film was terrible. All in all even though I'm not impressed with "Crimson Peak" as you are, but still I'd much rather watch such a movie that another remake/reboot/prequel/sequel/spinoff.

2 months ago when I saw your review you were probably the only reviewer I heard actually liking the movie and not considering it a disappointment... And now that I've just seen it I agree with what you said. I'm not a horror fan and I enjoyed it very much, the story was interesting, the sets were of course gorgeous and Jessica Chastain was outstanding (as well as Tom Hiddleston)! Gothic romance describes it perfectly and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who thinks they'd enjoy a movie of this type :)

I am glad that the film is not what the trailers are because Guillermo del Toro never made strait up horror films. I love him as a director because he makes horror beautiful. Have you ever seen Mama? +The Lawn Gnome That's exactly it, he doesn't make horror - he makes beautiful films with horror elements in them. And yes, I have, thought it was a pretty interesting spooky dark fairy tale, but I wish they cut down on the jump scares. What did you think of Mama?

Of course I wanted to see this film when it was in theaters... But October was a big month for me and I turned every free moment I had into an event for my Spooktacular. Sadly, I couldn't fit "Crimson Peak" into the schedule... Then October was over and this movie was already out of theaters! :O I finally rented it last night and fell in love instantly. The film was gorgeous. The world so very lucious. It was filled to the brim with people, every room was decorated. But more than anything was the SOUND! ... I watched the film with my surround sound headphones, because they help me focus on what I'm watching and I get less distracted that way... But this film in particular turned sound into a character. Every room has a unique sound and how it echoes voices. The creaking of places. I jumped several times during the film, because the sound led me to the scare and then smacked me with it. It was such an experience I have not had with a movie in a very long time. I think that's why I loved the film from the get go and then all the way through. In the matter of not meeting what audiences and critics wanted... This seems to be a thing lately. "The WItch" has been extremely polarizing with the other people I know who have seen it. Many found it boring, which once again I'm at a loss for. Maybe I've just become an old man who idolizes Kubrick... This happened before with Ti West's "House of the Devil" and "The Innkeepers", both also got lots of criticism that they were too slow burners... And perhaps this is where my love of Stephen King comes in. King gets hailed repeatedly that his spends the time making you care about the characters. You spend time with them. With "Crimson Peak" I would've been fine with a whole movie just being the third of the film. I loved del Toro's period film. Tom Hiddleston is just so... alluring... I could watch him for hours and hours... And I do... :-/ I mentioned to you last night that another reason I loved this movie was because how I found it spiritually similar to "Hellraiser". I rewatched that again last night because I was in such a kick. The thing about "Hellraiser" is that that Pinhead and the Cenobites are featured about as much as the ghosts are in this film. They're important, but on screen very little. Also when there is violence, it is quite bloody. That too also has a pace, because Barker is telling more of a Gothic tale than the horror tale the franchise later became. Mild spoilers though because you mention Charlie Hunnam's character... He actually has a surrogate in "Hellraiser" too. I was perhaps not bothered by Hunnam's character, because he felt in that same vain. Or even as Scatman Crothers in "The Shining". He's that False Hope character who you expect to charge in and save the day. And these stories are made all the better by not having that be the case. Another thing you brought up, but then didn't mention... You mentioned you thought it could've been the book she was writing but "probably not"... During the end credits there's a lovely detailed computer animation taking us through the above the line cast & crew members, but the final image left before the usual end tile crawl is the book "Crimson Peak" written by Edith Cushing. I took that to mean this film very easily could've been the book she was writing as all the little moments are mentioned from ghosts to the love story. But as I tend to accept things as reality, I vote everything in the movie did happen rather than the idea that it was instead just the book she was writing. So much to love about this film... I'm just again disheartened to know that my wheelhouse is not the same as the masses... But I'm never left wondering what is wrong with me, it is always what is wrong with others? ;D

+Rob Iwataki Once again, I'm so glad you liked this movie :) I'm pretty sure the problem with the audiences had A LOT to do with marketing. It was advertised as a ghost horror film, to the point where Guillermo del Toro had to come out before the screening and actually say "hey guys, just FYI, this is NOT a horror film". In a way this surprises me because any del Toro fan should know he doesn't REALLY make horror films, not in the traditional sense. People who were annoyed it took too long to get to Crimson Peak clearly missed the genre of this movie lol And then there are people who after Edith repeated over and over again that ghosts are a metaphor were still confused why ghosts were in the story if they didn't effect much... I just CAN'T every time I hear that comment. When I made this review, I only saw the movie once in theatre, so I didn't catch what that book said at the end. This totally goes with my theory that the part of the movie at Crimson Peak is actually her book :) I think it could go either way, or both ways but I feel like it's totally a twist del Toro would go for. Either way, gorgeous film. I loved it :)

So I just rewatched it :) I have to say, I really don't know what happened to me the first time. I've gotta say I made the right choice getting it on blu ray, because I adored this film the second time around. Everything about this film just has an elegance to it. I think the visuals are stunning. I think they amp up the volume on certain sound effects as well on the big screen, because it was a much different feel on blu ray for me. I agree with you it is so much better than what the critics are saying. It is endlessly re-watchable as well. I wish I'd have waited to do my top 10 as well because it should have been on there for me.boxd.it/8EQO5

The so obviously CGI ghost is regrettably not at all scary especially her plastic spindly fingers and her bony black face. A real 'woman ghost' would have been more effective. Something more like the evil governess's apparition in Henry James' Turn of the Screw.
