Crimson Peak is not a horror film. In the beginning it clearly says this is not a film about ghosts, but one with ghosts in it. It's a Gothic romance that is completely in love with the movies of its history. The film looks absolutely stunning and references classic horror in every way. This isn't a jump scare filled, torture porn, poorly acted mess a lot of horror movies are (thanks Blumhouse for most of then). I'm so glad Universal at least attached their name on something that wasn't artistically bankrupt this year

+Blake Johnson Man, have you actually seen this movie? Because THIS is a mess. If this is film that simply happens to have ghosts in it, that doesn't excuse the film from having some of the worst writing of the year and horrible lighting that wastes great sets and costume design.

+Blake Johnson It's interesting that you gave some insight into what this movie is, unlike the host that just bashed it with no proper arguments. Grace is the "republican movie critic" just hates everything that she doesn't get.

+Blake Johnson I wasn't expecting it to be full of jump scares or torture porn (I don't even like those), but I have to confess, I was waiting for something at the same level as the Pan's Labyrinth, full of wonder and mystery, like a well intricate charade... But none of the things that happened where surprising and the building up of the mystery didn't make me curious or excited about what was going to happen next... So I was disappointed...

+Beyond The Trailer The film is written like a classical story. I'm in high school and I can assure you it felt exactly like reading a dark romantic story like the classics we enjoy. This is a Gothic romance that is very niche for modern times and really grows on you. I really loved it for all the reasons I didn't expect to. Also Grace I know you love movie goer stories and mine was pretty special. I went to an advanced screening of the film with my mom, and she really didn't care to see it, however afterward she really loved it like me. I've never really discussed movies with my mom like this one.

I feel like the on the nose quality is intentional and is the point. The painting is meant to be a laugh, and the one liner at the end is meant to be a laugh. Edith says at the beginning "The ghosts don't make it a horror film, they are a metaphor." Saying "such and such is a metaphor" explicitly in the movie tips you off; all symbols should be taken with a grain of salt. Unless GDT tells me otherwise, I take that to be a signal that this is meant to be schlocky and fun. Not saying that makes it good... although I thought it was fantastic.

I'm not surprised at all that this movie failed meeting expectations since I dont even get, why Del Toro is regarded as such a good director. I mean sure, Pan's Labyrinth was very good but thats like the only good movie this dude has ever made. I enjoyed Pacific Rim for what it was but I think we can all agree when saying that it was a very dumb, poorly acted movie and apart from the entertaining action, nothing special or even well crafted..why's this guy got such a high status I have no idea..great review anyway Grace!

I really liked this movie, but I had already guessed what was going on from the trailers. the parts that I liked was the amazing set and the characters. I also really liked the parallel they paint with Mary Shelley and Edith. Mary herself married a romantic and left her home to live with him in Germany and Italia and as Edith says she died a widow. it was foreshadowing for what was going to happen to Edith so I really liked that

Haha "studio notes" lol. Wow, I'm surprised. I like Del Toro and I feel like his take on horror is unique and fantastical. The visuals on this film look very decent. I'll still see it to get my own opinion on it. Del Toro seems to be getting some bad luck recently with Pacific Rim being pushed back and back; Hellboy 3 not happening. Anyway, great video. Very thorough non- spoiler review.

Thanks for the review... My expectations were so low after this that when I saw it, it surpassed what I thought it would be. Going in knowing it's more of a dark romance than a horror movie and just has creepy images and some ghosts made a world of difference. I ended up loving the movie for what it was and I really don't see how if you didn't care for it, there wasn't some elements that made the film watchable. This review makes it sound terrible. It's not half bad at all and I thought it was a damn fine movie.

This is not a film for mainstream audiences. The misleading marketing was aiming for the wrong viewers and the studio spent way too much money on it (the marketing was everywhere!). I really feel that the type of audience that enjoys this type of film is very specific, even if the film tried to be mainstream at points (such as the film trying to turn the main character into the cliched "strong female character" that needs no man but always ends up getting one anyway).

Really? Del Torro has been very successful. Pans Labyrinth is one of the greatest films of the last 10 years. This is not a 'ghost' story horror film. It is a gothic drama. The fact that you were disappointed there wasn't a sex scene or cheap thrills really speaks a lot to your levels of taste. The script might have been lacking, but the visuals of this film are undeniably beautiful, and the script is not nearly as bad as you depict it to be.

Mario Ortiz well Iam not those other people. Secondly I can't defend a movie if I have not seen it. I need to see first if Iam to say if it is a good or bad movie. But I also don't go by what others say, I prefer to have my own thoughts about the movie. Now can I say a movie is bad? Yes I can, but I don't talk shit about it. That's just a waist of my time. If someone else likes that bad movie I was referring then I will say "ok if you like then awesome" because they have opinions. But not everyone will be just like you described it

I liked the movie but it could of been better. First of all I like mia wasikowski but she's pretty bland and generic at the beginning she is better at playing her character towards the end but as I was watching the movie I thought emma stone would have added the quirkiness they were going for her character at the beginning. I also wished their was more ghost and it reminded me of a book because in a book sometimes character investigate things over and over and over again but since this was a movie it slowed it down. I wish the relationship part would of been the part that was slowed down to be more believable. And I also wasn't a big fan of the transitions. But despite all these issues I thought it was a good movie and it feels like it may be a classic..... Eventually.

WTF !!!? NO descent wet & hot sequence!!!? I can't take THAT щ(゚ロ゚щ). Geeez you're seriously saying that film doesn't work in every way. If it's true, it must've the major problem in the beginning though. I hope that's not a cape. No offense, Grace. I'm gonna check other reviewers as well before I watch it by myself.

+Skinner Sweet one should always check out multiple reviews. For example, I read/watched multiple reviews on Fant4stic. Everyone was bashing that movie, but lone Grace said, it had some very great moments. When I watched it, I was prepared for the worst, but in the end, the movie was completely fine. Sure, it won't win any awards, but it wasn't the disaster everyone made it out to be.

buciallstar I know !! Grace made sounds like this film falls in short every possible ways. I just want to know whether Del Toro meant to deceive one's perception or not. I guess this not your business that checking out many reviews is the quickest way to know how a film, I've waiting for, taking shape ever since I live in non-Englishsoeaking country. So how do you think "Crimson Peak" coming out at this point ?

Sounds like the Audience really effected your viewing of the movie, doesn't help trying to take a movie seriously or give it a chance when you have a bunch of assholes laughing at certain points (then again I don't live in america, where I think this is the norm for some reason). I thought the portrait was fine, Iv seen other movies do this type of thing a lot worse and it was still accepted by the lemming audiences. Recommend viewing movies at times of day when people aren't there, I went to see this in the morning and thought it was pretty good old fashioned movie.
