PragerU has a video titled, "Why you Should be a Nationalist." Charming.
@aslapofreality14444 жыл бұрын
What’s wrong with loving your country?
@Len1244 жыл бұрын
@Skeptical Slim Sorry for the text wall, but I wanted to give you an honest answer. Excuse any typos--I only read back over it quickly. Like anything, it depends on the context. In the case of "nationalism," the range of contexts in which its neutral or positive is fairly narrow. I guess an example would be when someone is using it synonymously with "patriotism," which is relatively benign if you're talking about pride in your system of governance, constitution, and so on. Unfortunately, that particular context is the exception to the rule. Nationalism, as an ideology, arose in reference to the historical concept of a "nation" and and "nation-state," in contrast with "empire" (a state composed of various nations/ethnicities, often ruled by one of those groups). One reason it's controversial is its role in sparking the worst wars of the last few centuries, but I'll focus on another related and even more controversial aspect. So, the move toward nationalism in the 19th-20th Century in Europe was, at least in its original context, a move toward the self-governance of the continent's cultural, language, or ethnic groups; either through the dissolution of empires like the Austro-Hungarian Empire or union of a number of states dominated by one of these groups into a single unit, like the German Reich. A "nation-state," in this original sense, is a particular nation's state. Jews, for instance, were long considered a nation without a state. So for most of history (and, arguably, in most cases today), the term has been inextricably linked to notions of one's people, whether ethnic or cultural, as distinct from, and often in opposition to, other groups. Some examples might be French or Hungarian nationalism. That's why it isn't an exact synonym for the word patriotism: it has all this excess baggage. It may be used as such in the US, despite its multiethnic population, because it came of age as a country during this rise of nationalism and Americans have come to define themselves as one nation of people. Anyway, the original concept has been particularly important in German history because for most of their history Germans were spread throughout the countless feudal states of the Holy Roman Empire, and when there was a push toward a unified German state in the 19th Century, the effort was heavily influenced and motivated by nationalism in this linguistic/cultural/ethnic sense. This was carried into the 20th Century, intensified by their defeat in WWI, and radicalized during the ensuing interwar period. This, combined with race issues in other countries, like the US, led to a strand of nationalism that focused less on statehood and territory, and more on ethnicity (like "white-nationalism"). So, whether nationalism is a "dirty word," depends on context, but it's clear that PragerU is playing on its controversial history when he titles his video, "Why you Should be a Nationalist". He may be using it in its more benign sense, but "patriotism" is actually the more exact term and has the benefit of not being associated with the worst excesses of humanity. Though I guess he wouldn't be pissing off liberals or whatever if he did that.

His point that transgender men->women competing in sports is not a big issue may be right from an abstract level, but it's still an issue and if you have had concrete experience of it then it's going to seem like a much bigger issue to you. That's human nature and pointing to statistics simply isn't going to change that fact That's why I admit, progressivism is a positive standpoint, conservatism a negative one. By which I mean that if you haven't experienced an issue then it's very easy to be positive about it and be willing to change things 'for the better'. If however you've really experienced an issue in your life, and seen its negative effects, you're much more likely to be conservative regarding it. This is the number one reason people become more conservative as they age, because they've simply accumulated more experience. Only people who sit in their basements pontificating about them online stay progressive, and even they become conservatives compared to the next generation of progressives coming up.

@David Packman I understand the whole biological male/transwoman issues isn't “important” from a “widespread issue” standpoint, but it's definitely essential for things like female college sports scholarships and overall professional sports competition as a female. Imagine the WNBA with a significant number of biological males playing? Put that dynamic into ANY women's sport and it becomes a problem very quickly. I personally have no qualms with men doing it, but then competing professionally or even at an amateur level in physical sports against women would be detrimental. Think about vice verse...women competing in the NBA...or competing against men in track and field. Sorry, but you just don't see it because there is a particular physical advantage to males that most women cannot overcome.

I have seen a few kids in her movement all dark skin suckers, it is so obvious they are overcompensating for being dark same with her. I also agree its low hanging fruit to talk about males competing in female sports. Its obviously clear males have an upper hand in the strength department. But with that said, two things. One, certain cities are allowing this (abcnews.go.com/US/transgender-teens-outrun-track-field-competitors-critics-close/story?id=55856294) and so it does raise the questions, "how far can this go? If you pander to this then why not whatever comes next?" I think thats a fair concern. Or the MMA fighter, Fallon Fox, who just brutally destroys women in the octagon. And it is this line of thinking on the left that permits these things to happen. And two, its good to know Pakman agrees with this! I honestly wouldn't know unless he said that so to me its not as clearly obvious as he is stating. But look, thats why I am here... and not in my echo chamber on the right.

I was of a similar opinion pertaining to trans women competing against afab (assigned female at birth) people, until I saw the way my wife lost her strength when she started her HRT. This prompted me to look into the actual science, and I found that HRT does make an amab (assigned male at birth) person more similar in physical capacity to afab people than other amab people who are not doing through HRT. Looking further, women's sports that have allowed trans women on HRT to complete, including the Olympics, have not seen trans women dominating them.
@SOMEGUY78935 жыл бұрын
That's not all because if they were referring to who I think they were the person they were talking about wasn't amab but actually the opposite. And they actually wanted to wrestle as a male but the school denied them because said school agreed with them about that "biological reality"(Which totally isn't really just race realism but re-framed to include LGBT people as well) shit they were talking about.
@nateslovebug5 жыл бұрын
@@SOMEGUY7893 I remember that case, but I don't think that's what was being referred to here. As far as I can tell, there is zero even flimsy reason to restrict trans guys to women's competitions.
@SOMEGUY78935 жыл бұрын
@@nateslovebug I don't know, them talking about a chokehold and Dave mentioning that he "saw it in the picture"and such makes me think their talking about him. And still repeating the misinformation/lie that they were born male and not the other way around.
@nateslovebug5 жыл бұрын
@@SOMEGUY7893 It might be that they don't know what a trans man or woman is and are conflating the two. That both would baffle, yet wouldn't surprise me.

"Classical liberalism is very right wing"? Classical liberalism is moderately left wing. The only way you can come to the conclusion that it's very right wing, is if you're so far left everything looks like the right.
@therealjeff80865 жыл бұрын
There is a difference between the classical definition of Liberalism and "CLassical Liberalism". CLassical Liberalism is what we now call Libertarianism in the US. Some Europeans and Americans use the term Classical Liberal, the americans do it in order to not have any connection or perceived allegiance to the Libertarian Party I assume, IDK. I myself am a Liberal in the traditional american sense but, hates the Democratic party and has little in common with anyone who calls themselves Liberals, or the right would call a "libtard".
