While I realize this may not be true for every party out there, generally speaking it's a good idea to make a relatively assertive person the DM. As the person who gets the final say, you need to be able to make a decision on the spot that is fair and decisive. If you're going to start hemming and hawing and say things like: 'I don't know what to do', I'd suggest taking notes during sessions and seeing how other DM's do it, so you can learn from them and incorporate it into your own games. To me, it sounds like an equally big part of the problem was the DM, who was inexperienced and felt like she was stuck between her boyfriend and her friends, leaving her unable to make decisive calls. Even worse, she was open to manipulation from her boyfriend and I don't think the story shines enough of a spotlight on that. While she does have some redeeming qualities and it's definitely not all her fault, she did enable a lot of her boyfriend's bad behavior. I know the story told us she's a textbook people pleaser, but if she can't get past that during games and can't make fair judgment calls, then they need to tell her to work on that. No one likes favoritism. The boyfriend is obviously the real big bad here (get it?), but her enabling is what allowed it to spiral out of control a lot more than it should have. Be assertive, fair and as impartial as you can be when you DM. It was her first time and she was already at disadvantage due to her personality and an unfortunate situation of 'being stuck between a rock and a hard place' but I hope she's learned to work on that more, should she continue running games in the future.

I was asking myself "Is it me? Did I end up here?" until i saw they had a girlfriend and its not me. I can share briefly. So there was this somewhat private server me and a group of players joined. I submitted a homebrew class that got accepted which was crazy busted later on. I didn't realize that till a little later but two DMs banned me from their quests and I was quite humbled, then the place died because we all realized we had lives, and well that was the end of that. The broken class was from DanDwiki and was called "Shield Master."

i agree instead he stole a race i have been working on for roughly 7 years now and modified it and passed it off as his own, i suspect he took it from a worldbuilding discord server i posted the race in during its early development, the wolfborn are liturally birthed by wolves canonically. i am not exactly happy that Gunk whoever he is took the race and used it but i'm just learning about it now watching DnD doge, basically a 3rd party individual. based on the OP in the reddit post this Gunk fellow does not seem to be a particularly intelligent individual based on the "alpha" statements. canonically the Wolfborn in the revised iteration is based on Norse culture and are led by a Jarl who is typically the strongest or most capable since one can challenge a Jarl at any time in single combat to attain the position. whoever Gunk is he used the early version of the race and tried to modify it to his liking

I have a feeling that Gunk wasn't that good at the other games the group played, and when he saw a game he could "beat" everyone else at he tried his best to be the "alpha." That's why he was so insecure when anyone else got the spotlight.
@fangslore998811 ай бұрын
ironically i dont think he was good at creating anything either, the Wolfborn race he used was my creation and he took it from the worldbuilding discord servers i posted it on. the Wolfborn are liturally birthed by wolves and have lycanthropic-like traits namely the transformation ability, which gives them a humanoid werewolf/anthropomorphic-like form and a typical animal wolf form as well as a human form. it seems he took the race i had been working on for rougly 7 years and he obviously did not understand the race all that much since the Wolfborn do not have alphas or anything like that, they're based on a Norse culture so they're led by the strongest which was my latest addition. i am now believe sharing the race's notes on discord on worldbuilding servers was a big mistake

@@fangslore9988 Always a pickle when that kind of thing happens. Though I'll say It's entirely possible he came up with the name "Wolfborn" on his own by looking at Dragonborn and thinking "I want that, but as an edgy furry alpha male!" and made up some random grimdark stuff. In short, Sonichu Syndrome by adding what he likes to something else he saw that was cool. I say this because as you mentioned outside of the name there was nothing in common with what you created, which sounds legitimately cool by the way, like berserkers. The wolf-man is a fairly common homebrew request, especially by furries and edgelords. Heck Crowe's Perch has a funny one of a conversation between one guy arguing "Matt Mercer would let me play my furry OC" with the DM telling him to quit acting like a kid.
@fangslore998810 ай бұрын
@@StSubZero the thing is i created the wolfborn and what was described was too identical to the original version of the race i created with only a slight modification, and when they said gunk is also a redditor i realized he may have been on the r/worldbuilding discord server which i used to be on and he may have stolen it from there since i was on that server for a while and talked about the Wolfborn heavily there. i left it because it was dying and because the mods did not crack down on content theft because they were never even active.

Where do you find the art you use for your thumbnail images/video covers? This one is really cool looking. As someone who has played cooperative PvP games (Mechwarrior Online to name just one), and being involved on their forums enough... It is too stupidly common to hear these exact arguments about damage dealers are more "skillful" and "ends fights/win matches" and should always be the sole and best metric for rewards... I have seen other actions win matches in my games beyond just dealing damage. I have seen matches lost because someone on a team focused only on dealing damage and racked up insane amounts of damage score, but lost the match because they didn't sport anyone else on their team, feeding teammates into the grinder to fuel their damage scores instead... It is just awful and I cringe every time I hear the argument come up. This is a first time I've heard it come up in D&D though, as there are so many different ways to play. My group has RPed out of so many combat encounters that it's kind of funny sometimes...

Getting rid of the exp rule based on its long term impact on gunk was wrong. The game should have stopped there, because me getting literally 0xp for the rest of the game is where the game ends.
@jessl193411 ай бұрын
I think the easiest solution for that problem is if the healer or tank responds to the new rule by announcing that they aren't going to play support any longer since there's no incentive to do anything but attack and the more party members knocked out means more exp for them personally so the choice is obvious. One thing that people like Gunk rely upon is imposing on the goodwill of others while extending none in return. I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt but if someone has zero intention of reciprocating then you shouldn't enable their bad behavior. People like this don't care about fairness, they care about opportunities. If you appeal to notions of fairness all they'll do is take advantage of the opportunity this provides them to continue breadcrumbing others.

Honestly, while Jess should be given a bit of slack for being new, she definitely should have quite a bit of blame on her shoulders for the obvious favoritism and not helping stop him from pulling this bullshit, especially just allowing all that bs in the last fight because Gunks feefees got hurt. Yes, Gunk is the main asshole and deserves every bit of hate thrown his way and she is likely doing her best, but she's definitely messed up here. Also, the whole Alpha male mentality is bullshit too.

Messing with Exp is aalways a tricky idea and basing it off of things like damage is always a stupid idea. It incentivizes a very aggressive strategy that has no room for non-combat roles. Healing, buffs and debuffs, statuses, crowd control, all of these things are important if you want everyone alive at the end of combat. Making the rewards exclusive to the knife weilding furry dork should have been a red flag even to beginners.

I was wondering if Jess was being yanked around by Gunk and was to an extent, she still enabled him a lot and is responsible for a fair bit, which she accepted at the end while dropping Gunk. Though what's with the whole 'sigma male' stuff? Is it like the whole fake 'alpha wolf' nonsense where they claim to be a 'man's man' only to have stones in the negative size and are overcompensating?
@gurmyigoll353511 ай бұрын
I think sigma male is a rebranded alpha male. I also believe the scientist who coined "alpha male" now regrets coining it, especially since that term was pretty much describing a wolf father i.e. the "alpha male of the wolf pack" was simply a wolf dad.

My understanding of the "Sigma male" label is that it's basically the trope of the grounded, confident, solitary, and often (but not always) stoic lone wolf type of personality. For example, characters like Dante from Devil May Cry, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, or John Wick from the series of the same name - they all excel at what they do without really caring at all about status or power, and - while not particularly opposed to socializing on principle - generally tend towards either being loners or being a quieter and less social member of the team.

Joke's on him. The whole "alpha wolf" thing? That's a myth. It was a misconception b/c the guy studying wolves only studied captive ones. In short, he tried to write a book about human nature after observing ONLY convicted felons. Wolves in the wild don't have any "alpha". The leaders of the pack aren't whoever's biggest or strongest, but the oldest breeding pair. Wolf packs are literally just "mom, dad, the kids, and their relatives". Also, ironically, guess what animal started the whole "alpha male" trend? Chickens. Not wolves, not gorillas...CHICKENS.
