Crisis core is a very important game for me in my "gaming journey", the psp was the first system I bought with my own money and 14 year old me had never played a game with story that felt as big as crisis core especially on a handheld, replaying a little of it a few weeks ago it's flaws are very apparent. This is a great review and I think all the problems Jon had with it are fair but I always remember it for how impactful it was on teenage me, I honestly think it's a big reason I still love games today.

When I played 7 back in the day, I missed the side quest where Zack dies, so I played crisis core not knowing how he dies, just knowing that he did,, and kind of assumed the game was gunna end "happy" with his death happening "later" after the events of the game. So when I realized they were making me literally play out my death, with Aerith waiting for me to come home, I started crying like a baby. No game has ever made me cry so hard before or since.

Finally, many seconds later I got out, "Zack... died," to which I can only imagine my mom thinking who that could be, as I didn't know any Zacks. Several more seconds And I choked, "Crisis... Core," and she was like, "shh, shh, honey, it's alright, what's a crisis core? Who's Zack?" And I'm just like, "the game!" For what it’s worth, you’re not alone in your reaction. I went into Crisis Core because the story of Final Fantasy VII had such a profound impact on me as a kid. I knew full well how things would end for Zack, and how integral he was to Cloud’s story, which was already so precious to me. No matter how much time passes since I first played it, I still break down at the end every time. Combine that with his appearances in Advent Children, and I’m a total mess every time without fail.

Encounters are definitely predetermined and are normally within the slightly bigger areas of the corridors. They active when you cross a certain point in that zone but a lot of them can be skipped by just hugging a wall and missing out this point. Hugging the walls was the only way to keep sane during the mission mode for me.

I'm one of the very RARE few who played Crisis Core without ever playing FF7 before it and I also don't know how well I knew Cloud and Sephiroth before playing through CC. I played through the whole thing and struggled as a dumb young kid does but I resonated with this game so much for being a person who hadn't played any Final Fantasy before it. It was definitely because of Zack. I think I'll ever struggle to have a FF protagonist overtake Zack as my favorite nowadays just because of his journey. Zack is the heart and soul of the game obviously with being the protagonist but just the way he's written it just makes him a joy to play as. and experience the relationships that are closest to him. Angeal isn't a favorite but I enjoyed having him around in the parts of the game he's in and I definitely got hit when he did die. Cloud is also interesting because I definitely avoided the "Durrr Cloud's a big ol Emo" craze and I geniunely loved him and just viewed him as a dork who strived for more. Watching Zack be his dorky self with Aerith was really nice and the moments they have together such as the aftermath of Angeal's death was definitely something that made a big mark at the time. I think experiencing Crisis Core before Final Fantasy 7 certainly makes the story feel strange in someways and makes the way it plays up Sephiroth very strange because of not viewing him as the big bad, but as the toughest SOLDIER member really makes you feel like you're just following the ultimate good guy when its actually just watching the downfall of a man. But even with the callbacks... callforwards? to FF7 flying over my head it was still an enjoyable experience no matter what and STILL pays off that ending so well, even if I genuinely thought I could survive it back then in the moment. I don't know if Crisis Core does crack my top 10 favs of all time but it certainly is close if it's not in there.

Zack is just a really fun main character and seeing an inside look at Shinra as a SOLDIER in training is really interesting. When Sephiroth says to visit your parents, he says that to Cloud, since it was Cloud's hometown. Zack was born in Gongaga. So I guess that's why you can't enter anywhere. Cloud's memories where mixed with zack's, so he most likely visited his mom. I don't know about the part where he goes to Tifa's house since he was avoiding her, I don't think he would visit her house, if he wanted he could talk to her pesonally since she was his guide. Most probably it was there just as a curiosity, comic relief and to not raise suspicions.

Actually, the implied actual reason why Angeal had a bunch a creatures eat and turn him into a monster to be killed by Zack was so that him and his cells could not be used by Hollander as he knew Hollander and other scumbags would try to use his G cells for bad so he had Zack kill him. That's actually why at the end he thanks Zack for killing him as for that piece of dialogue making even more sense. The writing is bad because it's cheesy and not as direct, but for a 2000's game, it wasn't half bad.

I replayed the game last year and yeah...there are a lot of elements that haven't held up well over time. The computerized voice repeating "Activating Combat Mode! Combat resolved!" drove me up a wall. Going back to random encounters, which at least part one of the Remake has done away with, also made me internally scream. I'm watching a walkthrough of the original game right now just to refresh my memory on things, and of a 35 hour video, I swear it could be cut in half if you removed those encounters. Constantly having to stop the story and progression because of them is very frustrating and I remember that when I learned CC was meant to be played after the main game, despite being a prequel, I rushed through FF7 because I already knew those random encounters and turn-based combat would get on my nerves. They at least resolved one of those for CC and both for Remake (part 1. Still waiting to see if they keep this for part 2. PLEASE let them keep the same progression style for part 2 and 3!) But. Some things got better over time. The jokes about Zack's oddly named hometown still make me stupidly giggle, no matter how many times I've seen them all. And even Genesis becomes bearable when you have parodies, like from RABToons, to think of (Genesis literally slamming the book in Zack's face while fanatically screaming "Loveless! Loveless! Loveless! Loveless! Loveless!!!" lol!). Also, I found myself becoming obsessed with Gackt at this time and making a lot of Gackt jokes about him (fanfiction helped get it out my system, lol. Speaking of which, it was interesting to read a story I wrote based on CC from ages ago and my jokes then versus the jokes the internet has now created. I'm both happy I got to enjoy the game and write about it without the influence of everything around me, but also that more people are learning about this game, so it still retains relevancy and new people are enjoying it). Aside from jokes though, I think the story and world-building is just my favorite part of this game. The fanclubs for the Firsts were rather believable and funny (there is a woman who literally says "Imagining Sephiroth stripped to the waist makes me so hot", lol! And Genesis has two fanclubs, because of course he would. And I...would definitely be in Keepers of Honor for Angeal, lol). Getting to see Sephiroth before he had a permanent nervous breakdown was great as well (and hearing him voiced by George Newbern was satisfying. Damn, I would kill to have him replace the voice in Remake). And when I thought Cloudypuff was my favorite FF7 character, in comes the adorable black labrador puppy, Zack, and Cloud was relegated to my second favorite character. Except for his naivete and stout devotion to being a SOLDIER, even if what he's ordered to do is something awful, there's little I can criticize him on and he's a very likeable character. I knew he was going to die but that quote at the end, "...Boy, oh, boy, the price of freedom is steep," just makes me bawl every damn time I play that game. First piece of media I got the soundtrack for, and I've been listening to it again now on Spotify. Crisis Core might not be a masterpiece but I felt something playing it. I didn't walk away shrugging, "Well, that was nice," with no real attachment, the game has stuck with me all these years. And I'm excited to see where the FF7 series continues to go from here.

crisis core is a game i love to pieces and appeals to a very specific part of me that enjoys slap happy action jrpgs. the game part of CC isn't the most fully realized and could be better but i just fine it fun. And there's a reason i 100%'d back in high school. don't 100% the game btw its not fun its so repetitive just play the actual main story i promise its enough to make one playthrough super fun

With Europe missing out of most the classic RPG's of that era, yep pretty much Jon lol!
