I'm couple years late to the party and it's astounding to me that calling this game utter shit is an unpopular opinion... My god it is the most dull shit i've ever played, no turn based jrpg has ever bored me with its grinding the way this game did with its combat, garbage voice acting, needlessly convoluted with all manner of game mechanics which add very little in terms of depth and are just there so the devs can excuse themselves that they actually added something, if ever i wanted a game to have an auto combat system like the Tales franchise did it's this dumpsterfire right here. Cinematics and cutscenes are good

The issues you speak about speaks to the compilations and to a lesser extent rebirth and remakes obsession with spectacle In the original Zack's death is unexpected, he walks away from Cloud but he returns to him later, expecting to be alive only to be shot in the back and riddled with bullets. In crisis core, he walks in as a tragic hero, knowing he's going to die and it sort of betrays the point of his character from the original, where the spectacle, drama and gravitas betray a more simple, nihilistic, almost purposeless death that the original portrayed. Much like remake and rebirth I don't think expanding upon the original is a bad idea, it's when those expansions betray the themes of the original that it becomes icky.

It’s also so much harder on cloud the way he died in the og. The crisis core scene was beautiful but I hated how much they talked. Also Zack handing him the sword and telling cloud he’s his living legacy is some fan fiction cringe. It almost makes it look like cloud in the beginning of ff7 is just doing what Zack told him to and isn’t traumatized and created an illusion.

Just watch them ruin Rebirth by including Genesis and other shitty Crisis Core characters. I will laugh my ass off.

I can see that happening. Honestly is it really that hard for them to write good characters?

They didn’t, thank god. They did add Cisnei though. Who knows, Nomura still has one game left to ruin with these terrible characters. He still might do it.

I wasn't convinced at first, but I like how you explained how crisis core forces shinra into becoming a background element, a non entity in the plot and politics of ff7. It's like if 358 days (secret amazing game) was less self aware.

It's just another one of those shitty Tetsuya Nomura fanfiction of Sakaguchi's work. It's so irritating how they revised Zack's death and gave a shitty origin story of the buster sword. Angeal and Genesis are both trash characters. Genesis kept on spouting cringe inducing poetry that didn't made any sense. Zack's original death was brutal and tragic. He came really close to getting home only to get caught off guard and shot at the back of his head. That "you're my living legacy" crap from crisis core was cringe inducing asf. We never needed any of this compilation of ff7. Nothing good came from that garbage from nomura

I find it so interesting that the ending you described is just how I read this ending, that's why this game is one of my absolute favourites story wise. I would argue that they do implicityly make this the story and the point in crisis core, that the Shinra corporation as a corporation (not the individual well meaning people meaning to do good in this horrible environment) is rotten to the (crisis huhuhu) core and Zack's death was such a tragedy because we know all of Shinra's personel are expendable the moment they don't serve a purpose/threaten the company image. Though I also agree that some of it might have needed to be expanded on, but I think most of it is there, just not said outloud. It's like a quiet protest against whatever forces keeping it from fully voicing it, but one which makes it's case loud and clear none the less, at least to me. Also, I would say there is even more inherent tragedy in Zack wanting to do good and be a hero, but is manipulated by the powers that be to become a "monster", one that would (and does) kill indiscriminately if ordered to by the companys mouth pieces (his higher ups). He starts seeing the wrongs the company is doing during the buildup to the bombing of Angeal's hometown, and I'd say that from there he fully questions wheter his persuit of becoming a "hero" is really morally good. And then he is put in the tank before he can fully comprehend the full scope of his situation and is messed up by that. In his hopelessness of not being able to change the system by himself (as he vents to cloud about at one point) or save his friends, he eventually just goes kind of insane towards the end, hence the delusional scene with him trying to have a moment with his "dead" buddies. Having your worldview so shifted is not easy, and it does make sense that he also holds onto his "honor as soldier" as a symbol of his main wish, to become a hero. He dies not fully having come to terms with everything, and I find that to be powerful in and of itself, many people die in a corrupt system before realizing the full extent of said corruption, Zack dies as a cog in the machine, and we viewers with the full knowledge of this corruption, feel the full weight of how un(zack, sorry)fair that is.

For me, both this and Dirge are, “If Crazy and/or Evil, Why Hot?? The Games”. I find 90% of the characters in these two games to be attractive, so I went through these games just to watch these attractive characters interact. These games have a special place in my heart ONLY BECAUSE I was experiencing a gender identity crisis, followed by a sexual identity crisis when I played these games. The fact that these games did not take any extreme narrative risks or try to say any super profound was comforting for me to play when I had a damaged, slowly-stabilizing psyche. Are these games bad? Yes. Would I pay any company for these games? Hell no. I bought them used, and I bought a practically broken psp to play them for 60USD total at the time ($10 for the games, $50 for the psp). Had to keep it plugged in at all times and be extremely cautious of the jagged, diagonal crack in the center of the screen that was sharp enough to cut any fingers that touched it. Then the crack would start sparking if the psp was on for more than 3 hours at a time after I finished Dirge. After I finished Crisis and turned the system off after it booted me back to the game’s main menu, that psp never turned back on again. And I was completely fine with that. It felt too prophetic. I have nothing but vitriol for the segmented, corporate greed “revival of ff7” (because it’s NOT a remake; everyone knows that) and these spinoff games getting the treatment too. My energy for the flagship series was dulled by 13’s mediocracy being split into multiple games, then the announcement of complete abandonment of any sort of turn system, and finally the pointlessly multimedia and dlc-ridden mediocracy of 15. I’ll stick to games that are two years old or more to get them on the cheap or used, thanks.

That moment when the reviewer doesnt realize the whole point of the game are employees trying to live normal lives at the company that everyone works for in one way or another. The Turks do bad things but considering how much fans love them, they seem to have always gotten the benefit of the doubt because "its their job" and everyone is doing bad stuff at Shinra. Especially when you join the military side of the company... But there is also indications that the Turks might have no lives/families outside of work so how the hell wouldnt they become nihilistic about their job and the world
@Tippowitz Жыл бұрын
What? This comment feels like it requires knowledge of the Turks as portrayed in Before Crisis, because otherwise all Crisis Core really shows is an incredibly helpful Tseng and a Cisnei who is willing to compromise her job for a guy that she only kind of knows and vaguely thinks positively of.
@AntiNihilist Жыл бұрын
@brandonhaney4015 no I'm just connecting the character themes for the series. It all comes down to the tiny details that we do know about people's pasts, and I'm not talking about the main cast. I'm talking about the pasts of all the Shinra employees. Sephiroth never knew his family and was only taught to kill, and the Turks clearly don't like their job but after a moment(in Evercrisis maybe?) Cisneros says she was an orphan which aligns with the stereotype of governments using orphans as spies or secret agents. Same could be said about Rufus since it doesn't seem like his father would have anything more than a business relationship with him. There's definitely some evil people in Shinra but it's interesting that only those evil people died as of Advent Children.(as in Heideger, Scarlet, and Hojo while even Rufus got to live, because the writer felt he was as much a victim as Sephiroth, who also somehow lived)

I just don't understand what you guys see in the KH series. I get the nostalgia if you were a child growing up with the initial series, but saying because capitalism, KH is bad. This kind of flies in the face of that notion because it's a series that could only be born out of capitalism. You having two massive franchises incorporating their IPs to string together a narrative. The identity of KH is bound to this mash of corporate conglomerates and had always been narratively goofy and dumb. It was only held together by child amusement through Disney themepark refernces and SE character refernces. Pretending that there was something deeper is the problem KH fans get into because thw 3rd installment is all it could ever be. Nomura laid out his vision and was incredibly blatant with his narrative and characterization. Maybe this is a case of the man behind curtain, where some of you don't accept that there is no magic and it's always been a greedy franchise.
