I once toured an imitation crab factory. Very interesting. The used pollock that was ground to a puree with seasoning added. The most interesting part was the cooking process. It was extruded in a very thin strip along a conveyor belt then rolled , cut and package in the same belt.

Winn-Dixie used to carry Fisherman’s Wharf brand that was really good. I’ve tried other brands but they taste “soapy” to me. I mix this with a small sized pasta, red & yellow bell peppers, celery, onions & mayonnaise. I dice the veggies small, around a 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces and layer them on multiple paper towels to drain overnight in the fridge. If that step is skipped, all the juices release after it all put together and it looks awful & gets watered down… Basically a glorified macaroni salad. One pound of elbows or other small pasta to 2 pounds of faux crab meat.

Thank you, this was delicious! I can use this as a snack (I used cream cheese for my dip to help with the dryness) and a bacon substitute. Yes, I said bacon because some pieces taste like bacon.

We have imitation crab here in Australia too. But our super market doesn't call it that, they call it seafood highlighter. Or seafood salad mix

My mother used to use the imitation crab meat alot, when she made her crab dip/salad/Rangoon type stuff lol it was actually pretty yummy! Also, the California rolls are one of my most favorite types of "sushi" ever!!

@@khills I would absolutely love to!! Unfortunately, my mother was taken from us in a freak auto/train accident 17 years ago. I haven't had it in that long, bc I never actually asked her what all went into it. I so wish I would've. I'm finding more and more, as time goes by, all the things she used to make, that I don't know how to replicate, and it breaks my heart. I want nothing more, than for my children to be able to try her foods, especially since 2 of my 4 boys never even got to meet her.

If you don't have an Air Fryer, can you bake it in the oven? If so, for how long at what temperature?
@beautyonabarnbudget
@beautyonabarnbudget 2 жыл бұрын
Need to know this too! Usually you have to put the oven on a low heat and leave the door open a crack if you want to dehydrate and crisp whatever ur cooking.

@Mr. Cool it gives an even crisping effect . Much like frying does but without the oil , with air circulation. So while not actually "fried" per say. I've made fried chicken 🍗 🐔 in mine and I swear by it. As do many others. Healthier, not messy and faster. Win,win, win🤷🏻‍♀️

My chef in culinary school told me his friend actually patented fake crab. It’s essentially pollock marinated in crab or shrimp discard. Still tastes good though.

You should try oyster stew. It's made with canned oysters, half and half, a stick of butter, salt and pepper. Put the oysters and their juice in a large pot with half and half and stick of butter. Salt and pepper to taste. Warm gently on low heat for about 20 to 30 minutes and serve with oyster crackers.

I use "surimi" or imitation krab for my ceviche but I usually by the flake style and then really break it apart with a fork by scraping it and the end result looks a lot like crab meat. I then add cucumbers, onions, cilantro, tomatoes, lime juice and spices and eat it with corn tortilla chips. Make a great meal that's actually quite healthy.

I always did this in my air fryer because i dont need to use tons of oil especially for new year snack. I also dont use any seasoning because the filaments are already seasoned (in my country you can just lightly blanch it and eat it like that). Sometime to make it more festive we will sprinkle salted egg powder (dont forget to air fried curry leaves too) on the air fried filaments nyummmm

In Poland we don't widely call these "imitation crab" I don't think, just crab sticks or surimi. I think some people aren't aware it's not real crab lol My mom liked to make fake noodles out of it, if you overcook it it falls apart into strings. Pretty good for soup. Also yeah sushi with imitation crab is still sushi. What makes sushi is the rice, not whether it has raw fish or not.
