Criss Cross Rock Hunting Nets PILES of Agates!

Kate hits the gravel bars for a late fall rockhounding trip and decides to try a more methodical search for the prized Montana agates. By criss-crossing the beach side to side and trying to look at every rock, she finds an unusual number of agates, along with some gorgeous petrified wood and beautiful jasper. The sun is shining, and so are the agates - come along!

Thanks, Ed - I have to say that ANY trip on the Yellowstone is successful, even if you don't find many agates. The fact is that there are so many beautiful rocks, you just can't miss.

Great finds! The petrified wood certainly is impressive there. I can't remember how long ago you said it all formed. Just think about how much of it must still be buried. Plenty for generations of rockhounds! Has Jim ever faceted a Montana agate? I was imagining a little cluster of faceted agates containing dendrites all dangling from a silver chain. When one of your rocks said, "take me home", it got the John Denver song, "Country Roads", going in my head! Thank you for sharing your fun day on the river with Kava. 🐾

:) I agree, Gwynn! I'm still working on getting Jim to facet an agate - the problem is that faceting really requires clear material, so we're looking for the right stone.

My favorite rock collecting tool is a cheap but sturdy screwdriver. It's great for digging out specimens that are stuck in dried mud.

do you only look for the agates with the dentrites and waterlined? Are there banded ones, or is it not often you find bands?

There are occasionally banded agates on the Yellowstone, but they are much more rare than the dendritic ones.
