Vocal Coach REACTS to Roxanne (Cover) - AnnenMayKantereit & Milky Chance

I once met Henning May, the bass with the raspy voice, by chance in Cologne and got talking to him. I took the opportunity to ask him how they had recorded this cover. (For myself, I had thought of two possible scenarios as to how they could have done it: they could have pre-recorded it on location, or in the studio with an appropriate reverb applied to it, possibly even with IR of the building in a convolution reverb plugin.) He confirmed that they had indeed recorded it on location. For the recording, they had recorded the voices, instruments and the bass amplifier very close up. They had also set up a stereo pair behind the singers to capture the natural reverb.

I have a feeling that in this era of Ai, CGI, all fake stuff, people tend to stop believing in each others' talent, skill, and truth in the end. But Henning truly is that talented and has the most amazing voice.

It's not prerecorded! The guy on the left, Henning May, is incredible. The whole band is. They picked that location for the reverb. And they sound great with Milky Chance! You should check out "Tom's Diner" that they did with another band called Giant Rooks. And also "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head" that they did with Parcels.

FYI - this is not prerecorded. The building is used as an acoustic amplifier. It works great, and this is why you hear a little echo. I love how AMK uses the surroundings when recording some live music videos.

The covers AnnenMayKantereit do and many of the videos for their own songs are live recorded videos and I really don't know how you could not hear the characteristics of the location in the recording - the wight echo from the voices and the flat harsh sounds of the of the instruments with much less echo or hall. Other great examples are all their "proberaumsessions" or the cover "Can't get you out of my head" with parcels.

@lr8745 the building is called "Salzmannfarbik" known for the legendary Stammheim Techno Club in the 90s and early 2000s

Annenmaykantereit starts with street music, so they know, how to use the accustic of their surrounding like the echo of this building site and are able to sing very loud but still with a good sounding voice. So, I think, that's live!

I happened to be at a concert of annenmaykantereit in vienna last year.. i was really suprised what Henning can do with his voice live.. love to watch their vids but need to see them live again.. just another level

AnnenMayKantereit do a lot of features and covers with interesting bands, my personal favorite is their cover of can't get you outta my head featuring the parcels. AMK formed as street performers during their schooltime, so they are used to improv and use the qualities of their enviroment which really adds to their music. Edit: Many poeple don't remember Milky Chance but he had a kind of a big radio hit with "stolen dance" in the US and Europe in 2013.

Two big no's. Once because Tom Waits can sing, of course. You just have to listen to him carefully and interpret his alcohol- and cigarette-tanned voice correctly. And secondly because this is actually a live recording. You can notice it from the echo created by the corridor where the singers were standing in.

Yeah I’d agree with you…I’m actually a big Tom Waits fan. It was something I said off the cuff, Henning shows more nuanced control of his voice by being able to add huskiness or false vocal fold to the vocal and take it away when he wants, whereas I find Tom Waits has a more permanent husky timbre.

You can hear them tapping their feet on the ground when they aren't singing. The instruments get louder when the camera looks directly at them too. It's clearly a live recording.

You can hear instruments becoming louder when the camera is coming closer to it. I am pretty sure it wouldn't make much sense to manipulate it afterwards to make it just sound like live recorded.

Lookin forward to the deep dive on AnnenMaiKantereit. Liked how he kept quiet at the beginning, like: yeah, wait for the 2. guys voice XD Every few months i check if there are new reactions to some of my fav. artists/songs. Gotta say, your reaction was a nice watch with a great vibe and also knowledge of the matter. For me easy one of my fav. first reactions to them :D The focus on the singing given(as most of the time with his voice in a song) i want to point out the harmonica and how the dude playin it matched the 2 voices in his solo. I don't think they prerecorded. Because they have that space dynamic of there being a large space behind them. They make use of it in the recording. I even get that vibe similar to some of the late 60's bands live recordings.

This was recorded live at the ruins of an old abandond factory in Kassel Hesse, Germany in May 2015. Milky Chance is from Kassel and AnnenMayKantereit played around that day in the so called Kulturzelt. That Was a great show back then.
