‪@AnnenMayKantereit‬ I think is truly becoming one of my favorite bands. This song was somber, touching, and relatable. Beautiful sums it up pretty well. Heartbreaking too. I can't say enough about this performance.

I'm from Germany, and in German the lyrics of this song are quite simple, straight forward, with a bit of ("working class"?) dialect - but on the other hand they are breathtaking poetic and their rhymes take you straight down a rabbit hole. For all who don't understand German very well - it's a beautiful love song, rough like his voice, barefoot.

The lyrics are just so beautifully honest. Every time they write about a person, they play that song personally to the person in the song before the public release it. - so no one has ever surprised by. “Hey, isn’t that you and that song”. And it isn’t always easy. Henn said Pocahontas was the most difficult one for him emotionally. I think when people share something personal and real with the word is when music turns into art . I hope you return to their Proberaum Sessions again, may be with “Ausgehen”. I love that AK produce so many live versions of the songs without being on stage.

Glad you liked it. That was the song that introduced most of us to AMK and started their rise almost 10 years ago. The translation is ok, buit still very auto-generated. You can tell ChatGPT that these are lyrics to a song and you want translated lyrics (so it might also consider rhymes and numbers of syllables).

This one is amazing! Out on the street like that.. the ambient noise going on around him just makes it even more beautiful! Absolutely love it! My son and I discovered them about a year ago.. we are absolutely addicted! These boys are very special.. so much great music coming from them. Collaborating with the most talented musicians in the world! If you watch when they do, the enthusiasm for what they do just explodes out of them. They love making gorgeous music and sharing it with everyone..

I love AMK and it is nice to hear a non-native speaker listening to music the way most people around the world do - falling in love with a song without (most times ever) understanding it. this song gives me a similar vibe of the melancholy / yearning that i get when listening to REMs 'night swimming' somehow cheerful, but subdued by heartache. his voice and the songs are soo good. I love listening to their albums.

The first time I heard these voices they literally took my breath away. The last time I felt like this was when I first heard the call to prayer in Saudi Arabia. I mentioned Queen earlier, now Im feeling John Morrison as well. This band does what art is supposed to do. Move all of our senses.

Hi, Walterooski, thank you for another AMK reaction! I love your heart-felt reaction and cried with you a little bit about this shatteringly beautiful song. In fact, it's the first song Henning May ever wrote, when he still was a 17-year-old high school student. The video was made about 2014/15, when he was in his early 20s. (He's 32 now - how time flies!) It's through this video I first discovered AMK about nine years ago. I remember that this haunting song and video (and of course Henning's voice) - and the strange name of the band AnnenMayKantereit, too - have stayed in my mind since then. However, as I am not into pop music since the 1990s (I am 55 now and more of a classical music guy), unfortunately I didn't follow this band's career and only re-discovered them for me a few weeks ago. Since then, I became somewhat obsessed with AMK, but relieved that I am not the only one (shout-out to Suvi et al.!) I really love how this music transcends language and cultural boundaries and speaks to so many different souls throughout the world. I think their early songs are still their best or at least most powerful ones. Another example of an early AMK song with poignant lyrics is “Oft gefragt” (“Often Asked”), which is also kind of a love song, but not about a girl, but to Henning's father, who raised him and his brother as a single parent after their mother had left the family. (Translations of songs' lyrics are always tricky, as essential features like the sound and the rhythm of the German words, rhymes and alliterations, allusions to German idioms or other songs etc. get lost in translation.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXicXp2Jpr2tarc As much as I admire their early works and their beautiful career since then, I am also eager to follow their future artistic development and hope for many more beautiful songs by AnnenMayKantereit in years to come. (Provided there ARE still years to come for human civilization.)

It's a great feeling to find other people who are on the same wavelength with you & your favorite artist. At first, it feels like it's only you relating to the songs, like no one around really gets what I'm feeling - and then, slowly, other people just kinda start showing up; sharing their thoughts that are surprisingly close to yours.. and you feel kinda validated. Like you're not so alone anymore.

There's an anecdote that, when AnnenMayKantereit weren't well-known yet in Germany, they opened for a rock band in Stuttgart. So imagine a venue full of rockers and bikers, the curtains go up and there's a scrawny boy sitting at a piano. The audience thought that it was a joke, but then Henning played this song. And a friend of mine was at that concert, he told me that you could hear a pin drop afterwards and before the audience applauded, everyone was just stunned.

This is the first song I heard from them. I saw them in concert a few years ago and there I heard their song "Sieben Jahre" and burst into tears during the concert because it's a song about losing someone which make me think of my brother. I'd love to see your reaction to that one, it's very emotional 💗

Love love love AMK, and your reaction to this song is why things like it exist. It takes creatures like music and poetry to reflect (quantify, as you put it) human things like finding an almost happy comfort in old, familiar pain. That's Cohen-level sh*t right there.

Great video. I'm not sure if you got the meaning of the most important words to a 100% right : "gemeinsam einsam" is a paradox: being together but at the same time feeling alone. You can physically sit beneath your partner and in your heart feel like you're miles away. The love has gone and it comes to your mind that it's over. I may be wrong but I think your translation read: "share a moment of solitude". That's a different meaning in my opinion.

My take on the lyrics. Even though ChatGPT was actually quite good (so I looked at it for inspiration when my translation was not good), it missed some subtleties. And again I am sitting, barefoot on the piano, (hope this is correct; basically I'd interpret this line as him sitting at an actual piano playing it; hence "on" and "the") I dream lovesongs and sing about you (the "dabei" means: While dreaming love songs I sing about you) you and I we were peculiar - not for me for those who were bothered that we were heard at night I sat with you together lonely and in silence, I remember best lying lonely together (the contrast between lonely and together is stressed in the German lyrics especially since the words "gemeinsam" (together) and "einsam" (lonely) are so similar) Every morning after at your place; you naked in bed and me barefoot on the piano And again I am sitting barefoot on the piano I dream lovesongs and sing about you You and me did not work You wanted to know everything and this drove me away, To be honest [it drove] you [away] - you did not stay any longer with me. (words in [] were not said but are the implied meaning) And thus I am sitting barefoot on the piano to love. (different word order in german) And again I am sitting barefoot on the piano I dream lovesongs and sing about you You and me, we were not enough (even though he actually says the word "wenig" for "too little", the better translation seems to be this variant) And again I am sitting barefoot on the piano dreaming of you. I'm dreaming about you and dream about you The "dabei" in the last part again can't be easily translated (and is in each of the dreaming about you parts) but again means that he is dreaming about her while sitting on the piano / playing the piano - there is no single word in English for "dabei", the literal meaning is "while doing this"
